Activities at Hyacinth House Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Tammy Carpenter

Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Tammy, I am the Activities coordinator. I joined Hyacinth House as one of the Night Seniors, I am so happy and proud to be part of the Hyacinth team.  All my colleagues are so passionate about our journey together and what we are doing, we all share the Barchester values and keep them at the forefront of our minds.

My journey into the Care Sector started more than 6 years ago, initially working as Agency to see if I was the right fit for care work. I instantly fell in love with all aspects of care and getting the chance to work in difference places, gaining experience and knowledge, working and caring for a variety of people in their homes and in a residential/dementia care setting.  I've learnt so much and I completed my NVQ Level 3  and continue to pursue further qualifications.

I enjoy getting to know our residents, learning about them as an individual; their likes, dislikes, and their lives outside the home.  I am very passionate about improving the lives of those I support and the importance of continuing their interests.

In my personal life I am very active, with family life and with two Cocker Spaniels, there is never a dull moment. With a passion for adventure and hiking, with water sports thrown in and always up for trying something new.  Also a keen photographer, I enjoy getting my camera out to capture moments.

I look forward to welcoming you at Hyacinth, and capturing the moments we create together.

No Tricks, Just Treats!

Last week we welcomed the community into our home for an afternoon full of fun and laughter. It was lovely to see residents and relatives join in alongside their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Families brought in carved pumpkins for judging and children had the opportunity to decorate home-made spooky shaped biscuits, play musical bumps and colour some Halloween themed pictures, all whilst dressed in their best costumes.

Build your own burgers and hot dogs and hot chocolates were prepared by our head chef Howard and went down a treat, Deputy Manager Janet, took the task of being judge seriously as she awarded the best decorated biscuits, best fancy dress costume and the best carved pumpkin. Prizes presented were vouchers for Hobby Craft and of course, sweets!

Indoor skittles was a blast

Our wonderful residents truly enjoy the camaraderie and a touch of healthy competition. The weather prevented an outside game on this occasion, so we transformed the hallway into a skittles alley.

It was a joy to see everyone supporting each other and Eveline said 'I couldn't agree more when I say, we always have such fun and I love seeing everyone staying active'

Mary joined in for the first time and scored well, making her the overall champion for the day!

Celebrating the flavours of Jamaica at Hyacinth House!

Last night , our community came together for a Free Jamaican Buffet Night, a tribute to Head Chef Howard's roots and his favourite dishes from home. The menu was a feast for the senses: curried goat, chicken fry, reggae braised pork, beef patties to name a few with an array of sides, including dumplings, plantain, rice & peas and more, refreshing desserts and all washed down with delicious rum punch!

Our guests were entertained to the incredible beats of Cass on his drums and shekere, to Jamaican Classics.

Our lucky raffle prize winner, Anne received the Jamaican Themed Hamper.

A special mention to Lynne from natural Skin by Lynne for donating a lovely skin care gift bag for a further prize, won by Annie. Our raffle raised a further £60 towards the charity The Big Sleep Easy. Thank you.

Wendy won a bottle of fizz for colourful outfit as judged by Cass.

Visitor Gerald always makes us laugh with his sense of humour wearing an Australia hat!

Howard and team did Hyacinth House proud. It was great to see familiar and new faces for this special evening, thank you to everyone who joined us, we can't wait for the next event.

Stay updated with all the happenings at Hyacinth House by liking and following our page. We have more events coming soon and look forward to more fun and community spirit, it's part of what makes our home special.

We are thrilled to announce..........

that our Managing Director, Natasha Lazovic, has been nominated as a finalist in the Great British Care Awards 2023, having been shortlisted in the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to Social Care category.

The London final is part of the Great British Care Awards, a series of nine regional awards celebrating excellence across the care sector. The purpose of the awards is to promote best practice within both the home care and care home sectors, and pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work. The awards ceremony will take place on November 18th and the winner will go forward to the national final next year.

Natasha came to the UK in 1994 from Serbia and commenced her training as a nurse. Natasha, extremely caring by nature, has had an amazing career, and with dedication and determination has progressed from a registered nurse to Managing Director, working in a variety of care settings, both in the NHS and private sector, with London being a main base. Natasha joined Barchester in 2014 as Regional Director leading 10 homes, which then doubled to 20 as Senior Regional Director, and as Managing Director now oversees more than 80 care homes in the South Division. Handling an extremely challenging role, Natasha leads the teams with a calm can-do attitude, she has an amazingly inspirational story and truly deserves to win.

Natasha commented: “I am very humbled to be nominated for this award, and I am very proud to be part of the shortlist, and to be representing Barchester as a finalist. It is an honour to be recognised for doing a job I love and I wish to continue to make outstanding contributions going forward, I am hugely passionate about the care sector.”

Congratulations, Natasha!

World Menopause Day - 18th October

It's World Menopause Day!

A day dedicated to breaking the stigma and highlighting the support available to improve health and well-being for those experiencing menopause.

What better day to announce the next Menopause Cafe Wimborne will take place at Hyacinth House, 28th November 6.30pm-8pm, hosted by Rona Jones and Nicki Curtis.

Rona said “For many people, menopause is a long road and one that still isn’t talked about very much, although there has been more media coverage recently. I believe that we have much to gain by sharing our experiences and so, inspired by a BBC documentary on the menopause, I am setting up a local Menopause Café for people to meet up and chat over tea and cake in a safe, non-judgemental space.”

This is a completely free event including refreshments!

For more information search Facebook for "Menopause Cafe Wimborne"; they have a public page and a private group. https://www.menopausecafe.net/

We took part in The Big Sleep Easy 2023

Last Saturday our Home Services Advisor Jane, took part in the Big Sleep Easy event on the grounds at Talbot Heath School, alongside other dedicated individuals and companies, all to make a difference and raise funds to support the homeless.

An added element to the night is to create and decorate the boxes provided, Hyacinth House used camouflage netting and created a leaf stack using the Barchester leaf logos cut out by our residents and staff, complete with charming creatures including a dog and robin plus a rake prop for an authentic feel.

However, it was no easy feat competing with the incredible house built by sister home Parley Place. The pictures show other creations on the night too!

While everyone was a winner for taking part, a massive congratulations goes to Michelle, Brian, Gina and Lee for clinching the "most creative hut" prize and trophy. They did an outstanding job!

Driving home after the chilly night gave a poignant reminder of the comforts we often take for granted - being able to return to the warmth and safety of our homes, the luxury of a hot bath and comfortable bed.

Sheena Dayman at YMCA Bournemouth is truly amazing at what she does and we were thrilled to be part of it, she works tirelessly and selflessly and is an inspiration. With the winners setting the bar high for next year, the planning has already begun!

Thank you to everyone that has helped Jane raise £238 so far, for her birthday next month she has requested donations be made in lieu of gifts. Residents has been asking friends and family to support the cause too and were behind her all the way. Jane also completed Trek26 in September in support of the Alzheimers society and raised £377!

If you would like to contribute and donate please use the following link which will be open until the end of November. Thank you for your support and every little bit helps! https://www.justgiving.com/.../jane-shanahan...
