Activities at Mulberry Court Care Home

The team at Mulberry Court works hard to support and encourage residents to participate in both group and individual activities, based around their preferences and lifestyle choices. We take time to get to know each person, sitting with them and listening to them speak about their lives, interests, and aspirations. We have access to our own minibus so outings to nearby places of interest are available; for example local museums, art galleries, garden centres, and public houses. We also host themed evenings, such as 'Quiz and Meal-in-a-Basket', 'The Races (Greyhounds, Horses)', and 'Takeaway and Movie Night' that we also encourage relatives to come to. We believe lifestyle choices and activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home, and it is essential that we help residents to have fulfilling and enjoyable lives.

Zoe Giles

Lead Activities Co-ordinator

Hi my name is Zoe I am the lead activities co-ordinator here at Mulberry Court, I started in January 2024 having previously worked at another care home on reception, however I  started doing more and more activities with the resident’s there so when I got the chance to move across to a Barchester home and do the role of lead I took the opportunity.

I have always enjoyed organising and am usually the one in the family who brings everyone together and sorts things so I feel I have found my true calling!

I am so lucky to be able to say I love my job, no two days are ever the same, although every day is so rewarding and to know I have made a difference to someone is the greatest feeling whether that’s through a group activity or an individual room visit to even stopping and saying a few words to them.

Life at Mulberry Court Care Home

Father's Day

Residents at Mulberry Court enjoyed a special lunch in celebration of Father’s Day.   This year, due to the current situation, family and friends joined in the celebrations virtually via video call. Residents weren’t phased by this however, as they have become quite tech savvy at Skype calls, FaceTime, and online events. These platforms are an invaluable way to keep people connected with loved ones and friends, as well as with the local communities, during these unprecedented times.

Staff and residents enjoyed a day of a special homemade lunch of prawn cocktail, roast pork with apple sauce, or baked haddock with cheese and tomato topping, both served with roast creamed potatoes and assorted vegetables. Pudding was firm favourite chocolate sponge with custard and was prepared by the home’s chef.

Residents Get Pampered

The ladies at Mulberry Court recently enjoyed a beauty day at the home courtesy of the staff from the home swapping roles for the day to treat residents to hair and beauty treatments. Honouring the women residents at the home, colleagues supported with a range of beauty kits in the salon to pamper and beautify.

The hospitality team at the home also served a spread of teas and cakes for all to enjoy to the delight of all!

Tracey Illingworth, Activities Coordinator said: “It’s always a lovely treat to be pampered, and our residents deserve it. We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment at the home as part of the lifestyle enrichment programme for residents, and this one was our most fashionable fun! Living in a care home doesn’t put a stop to celebrating life, and our engaging activities are designed to be enjoyed by all who want to join in.”

A Breath of Fresh Air

As the sun shone, residents grabbed the chance to enjoy the dry weather with a little exercise and reading of newspapers in the garden. Everyone felt better for grabbing a breath of fresh air, feeling the sun on their faces and chatting about their favourite flowers.

Happy Birthday, Captain Tom!

Residents at Mulberry Court created handmade cards for Captain Tom Moore to surprise him on his birthday.

Captain Tom is a former British Army officer, known for his efforts to raise money for the NHS in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the Coronavirus pandemic. Moore served in India and the Burma campaign during the Second World War.

Sweet Treats for Everyone

Mulberry Court had a sweet treat in store for residents as they took part in an exciting baking session. Residents put their aprons and thinking caps on as they decided what to bake, with Betty showing off her delicious cakes before residents sat back and enjoyed the mouth-watering treats whilst trying different kinds of Yorkshire tea.

Community Spirit

Residents and colleagues at Mulberry were delighted to answer the door to accept a special delivery from their local Morrison’s outlet, who were out delivering free fresh bread and bakery items to carers and key workers across the York area for everyone to enjoy and in recognition of the homes hard working, dedicated team supporting residents during this difficult period.

The cheese scones were particularly tasty! The aroma of these tasty treats can be smelt throughout!

On behalf of Mulberry Court, residents and colleagues would like to pass on their gratitude for being considered at this time of uncertainty and hope everyone stays safe and well. Such a nice gesture thinking of us care homes and everyone joining forces to keep the community spirit together!
