Activities at Milford House Care Home
The Activities Team at Milford House are dedicated to providing a range of stimulating activities for both groups and individuals, that promote both physical and mental wellbeing based upon resident's interests both past and present. As a member of the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) the team are always striving to incorporate best practice into the array of activities on offer and to enhance their own skills through qualification with NAPA to NVQ Level 3 in Activities Provision. The team combine weekly activity favourites such as sherry mornings with special events, musical entertainments, slide shows, outings in our own mini-bus as well as interacting with local community groups such as Plain Arts Salisbury to showcase resident art and creativity and others who come into the home to interact with our residents. Milford House also benefits from a strong network of volunteers who support the Activity Team as they deliver their programme and who, along with friends and relatives, are always welcome to come and join in our sessions and outings.
Gale Louw
Gale joined the Milford team in 2019, initially as a carer but has gradually transferred over to the Activities Team where she is now the full time Coordinator. Gale has a passion to create a comprehensive and inclusive programme of vibrant events for residents, family
members and friends to enjoy and, along with the rest of team, ensure that each resident is able to participate in meaningful activities tailored to their likes and dislikes.
Originally from South Africa, when not at work Gale loves nothing more than exploring the UK, catching up with family and friends, being creative across a variety of disciplines and keeping her eyes out for great activities and events she can bring back to the home for
residents to enjoy.

Life at Milford House Care Home
Animal Magic
Residents spent a wonderful afternoon getting up close and personal with a number of animals that were just crying out to be petted. We had Thor, the lovely rather large rabbit who was just a softie, Chloe the 'skinnypig' (a hairless guinea pig) who had skin like velvet, Gimley the Australian Sand Lizard and Slider the American Corn Snake. It was a fascinating afternoon learning all about these animals and then getting to know them personally.
Valentine's Tea
Here at Milford House our dining room was a sea of red hearts as we celebrated Valentine's Day with a tea party. We all joined in singing songs with a romantic flavour before tucking into a wonderful heart-shaped cake. The honour of cutting the cake was given to two residents who were just a couple of days away from celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary. We all congratulated them and had to ask what their secret was!
Mardi Gras at Milford House
Milford House have celebrated Mardi Gras (literally 'Fat Tuesday') with an afternoon of Jazz from the MSC Collective. Our dining room was decked out in the traditional Mardi Gras colours of green, purple and gold, the residents had made table decorations and we listened to amazing New Orleans Jazz. What better way to spend the afternoon!
Snowdrops in Spring
We have brought spring inside today with a lovely bunch of snowdrops which the residents have thoroughly enjoyed! We read poems, explored writings and other aspects of February in our morning activity whilst sitting round the snowdrops! Along with the sunshine pouring into our conservatory today they have brought a feeling that, despite the very bad weather forecast for the next few days, Spring could be just around the corner!
Mardi Gras
Residents at Milford House are looking forward to celebrating Mardi Gras. After a traditional lunch featuring pancakes, we will be settling down for our own mini mardi gras which features a mardi gras tea and music, traditional jazz from the MSC Collective. They came and played for us in the summer and went down a storm so we will be having a thoroughly happy afternoon in advance of Lent!
Exploring Art at Milford House
We have just held the third of our 'Exploring Art' afternoons, which again featured pictures and items from the Wallace Collection. The theme this time was 'Stories' and we explored pictures and objects that represented Greek and Roman myths and scenes from Shakespeare. Pictured is a small plaque of Hercules slaying the Lion which we looked at on screen and then explored with lifesize bronze and plaster casts so that we could really see and feel the fine detail of the work for ourselves. We had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and are looking forward to exploring the next set of artefacts.
