Activites at Ashminster House Care Home
Activities at Ashminster are based on residents' life histories. We host music workshops and encourage participation in a number of other activities, including gentle exercise, bingo and gardening. Monthly live singers entertain everyone with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s and residents are encouraged to interact with the musical instruments. Sensory sessions with fibre optic lights and touch & feel blankets are provided, which can be calming to those living with dementia. Residents participate in cooking sessions and enjoy the aromas of bread, scones and cakes - and, of course, sampling the finished product over a cuppa! We promote family values at Ashminster, and those we support can enjoy reminiscing about family events in the past, including weddings and previous occupations.

Elaine Hilden
Head of Lifestyle
I have worked at Ashminster House since 2003, first as a carer then progressing to activities coordinator, which has know as 'Head of Lifestyle'. I have a wealth of experience in my role, as well as NVQs in Health and Social Care, Activities in the Care Setting and Dementia.
I am passionate about fulfilling residents' lives by getting to know each individual with a person-centred approach, learning about their experiences and helping them to express themselves, such as through reminiscing with items of old.
My interests outside of work include antiques, dogs and spending time with my family.
Celebrating life at Ashminster House Care Home

Stamp and coin collecting
Continuing with hobbies and interests is very important here at Ashminster House.
One of our gentlemen collects stamps. We have asked the community to drop off any unused stamps to continue his hobby. Cyril is now educating our staff about old coins and what you could buy in the shops years ago.

Sensory smells in the garden
Our sensory garden is full of smells this time of year, from lavender, mint, rosemary, lemon grass and roses. Lissette has been observing one particular rose and has been awaiting the day it’s in bloom.
She said the aroma was a raspberry smell with a hint of sweet honey. Lissette showed a good memory and recall of making perfume out of petals as a child.

A visit to the community Library
A community friend of Ashminster house has set up a library where residents can choose their favourite book any time of the day. One of our residents expressed that choosing her own book on a weekly basis lifts her wellbeing and gives her a sense of purpose.
Marion has now taken on the role of leading our reading a loud book club, which she is very proud of.

Trip to Godinton House
The sun and the flowers were all out on the trip to Godinton House. This trip was requested by one of our residents who is a keen gardener.
His knowledge of flowers and plants made his day very special as he mand most of the flowers out in bloom.

Trip to see the Spitfires
Our Gentlemen’s club this month was held at the spit fire Museum at the top of Folkestone hill. They were shown around by a guide and were able to lay poppies on the memorial wall.
One of our residents expressed that the noise of the spit fire engine would stay with him forever.

The day started with a reminiscing session with wartime items where residents shared stories of where they were on that day.
In the afternoon, residents were entertained with a wartime sing a long. Our amazing chef served a lovely buffet with a glass of Pimms.
