Activities at Bedewell Grange Care Home

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Donna Brooks

Activities Coordinator

My name is Donna. I am the activities co-ordinator at Bedewell Grange.  I joined Bedewell Grange in April 2022 and I bring lots of new exciting ideas to the role, having worked in the health and social care sector for the last 15 years. I am passionate about my role within the home and aim to bring a smile to all our residents' faces through different types of activities.

I'm bright and bubbly, so I aim to share this each day at work. I have experience in supporting our residents who are more able, as well as doing sensory Namaste sessions with our residents who are less able.

As I get to know the residents' likes and dislikes, if you would like to come and chat with me about your family member please pop in and see me.

Bonfire Crafts

Our residents enjoy showing their artistic flair and being creative in our regular craft classes. We used recycled products and a bright colourful mix of paints to make a firework display for bonfire night.

The finished products were lovely and our residents displayed them for everyone to see. Our residents enjoy the sessions as they enjoy sharing ideas and enjoying time together.

Halloween preparations

Our residents have been busy making homemade gifts for our upcoming Halloween party, where we will be joined by residents and staff's children and grandchildren for party games.

Our residents made pumpkins which they painted and filled with sweets and handmade bats for the games. Our residents can't wait to see the children in their costumes.

Minibus outing

Our residents enjoyed a trip to the Sunderland winter gardens where they enjoyed a wander around the museum looking at the mining life and how fashions and daily living has changed throughout the years. Our residents really enjoyed the museum and found it really interesting.

We stopped at a local bar for a spot of lunch and enjoyed refreshments in the museum café.

Dance & Exercise

The weekly dance class which starts with a warm-up to prevent injury. During the session, we follow simple dance routines to favourite songs chosen by our residents. It is a popular fun-filled activity as we use a selection of colourful props to include into the movements and often find ourselves up on our feet dancing and enjoying a ‘boogie’.

It is always a lot of fun with everyone feeling great afterwards as exercise releases endorphins.

Little Movers

Our monthly intergenerational dance class was a huge success as always. We celebrated Bills birthday with the little movers and Stanley nursery. Bill  was thrilled to be serenaded with the children singing happy birthday.

Our residents and children had lots of fun as we sang along and danced to the music with pompoms and colourful scarfs.

This is a favourite activity which our residents always look forward to.

Cowboy Day

We put on our Cowboy hats as Mike Memphis as Elvis returned for a showdown! We decorated the room for our theme day. We sang all the country songs as our residents danced along.

Elvis is always popular here at Bedewell, and he is requested in every resident meeting.

Our Wish Tree delivers!

Our Wish Tree delivers!

Situated in our café at Bedewell, we have displayed our wish tree complete with our wish box and wish slips in which our residents can write something they would like to do, such as a trip out, a favourite meal or a hobby they enjoy. One of our ladies chose a steak meal with all the trimmings.

Vinnie enjoyed a trip out to choose her steak and she also chose garlic bread with cheese, homemade onion rings and mushrooms with brown sauce.

Our chef cooked the steak to perfection and Vinnie thoroughly enjoyed her treat! Her photo will be displayed on the tree now her wish has been granted.

Our residents have been out in force keeping our garden blooming and colourful. They have been watering all the pots as well as weeding and keeping everything tidy.

We have been taking out and spring bedding plants and replacing them with summer plants. Our garden is a lovely space that everyone uses and we welcome families to join us.

Pumpkin Carving

We held an intergenerational pumpkin carving class here at Bedewell as we celebrate Halloween. Our residents and the children loved carving up the pumpkins, making some fabulous designs with paint and different fabrics and textures.

We enjoyed spooky music and finished off a lovely morning with Halloween snacks and treats.

We have been out whilst the weather has been nice to replace some of our bedding plants with some autumn colour. We swept up the leaves and made sure it was tidy and pretty, as we still like to get out of the garden when we still can.

There was a lot of teamwork as we spruced up our pots.

Residents enjoy a trip to Beamish

Our residents were delighted to be out in the mini-bus on a trip to Beamish museum. The weather was beautiful as we made our way around the 50s town. We chatted with the nurse with the silver cross pram identical to the one Queen Elizabeth used. We enjoyed fish and chips and a trip to the funfair. The bus drivers were fantastic and kept in character all day, which had our residents in hysterics.

We had a lovely day out and look forward to our next visit.

World Chocolate Day

Our residents were very excited to celebrate this day.

We had a chocolate fountain with marsh mallows, a cocktail fountain and so much chocolate to choose from. We added in a fruit platter to add some nutrition into the mix.

We had a resident meeting where our residents made a list of all their favourite chocolate for us to display on our sweet trolley and its fair to say it went down a treat!
