Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
Remembrance Day
We marked this historic centenary in several ways at Kernow. Our two occupational therapy students designed and made poppies with residents during pop-up cafes, and these poppies were given to our residents on Remembrance Sunday.
A small group of residents went to the War Memorial in Launceston and took part in the service there, whilst another group drove to town later in the day to see the many wreaths laid in memory of those who came before us.
During the afternoon, we gathered to read and listen to war poems, and an extract from Sebastian Faulks’ 'Birdsong was' read, giving everyone a chance to reflect and remember.
To Absent Friends
We marked this themed week at Kernow with a hymn service dedicated to absent friends, and we had a board that residents, staff and visitors could leave a message for their loved ones on.
We ended up making a flower in memory of our absent friends, and The Tintagel Storyteller, Jill Lamede, joined us one afternoon to tell us stories themed around love and loss, and it was a very emotional time for all of us, giving us opportunity to reflect and remember.
It’s good to be around friends; we have strong friendships here and cherish them.
30 Years of Service
Careen Harris presented Bev Parsons with her 30 year Long Service Award! Bev received a Barchester pin along with a £250 Love2Shop voucher. Bev is a Carer at Kernow House and has worked devotedly for many years. She has seen many changes over the years but she has stayed with us and is our longest serving member of staff.
Well done, Bev and enjoy your shopping spree!
Pumpkin Carving Competition
We like some healthy competition here at Kernow, and Halloween was the perfect opportunity to have a pumpkin carving competition. Every kitchen entered with a spooky pumpkin.
Pictured is Deputy Manager, Jo Coombs, and General Manager, Careen Harris, who were both dressed for the occasion. They cast their vote and, after the pumpkins were taken around the entire home so everyone could see them and vote for their favourite, the winner was announced.

World Food Day
This year we persuaded our Pilipino chef Dina to make us a dish from the Philippines. She suggested Chicken or Egg Congee, which is a glutinous rice dish similar to risotto but flavoured with ginger, garlic and fish sauce. It was very tasty and went down very well, but for those of us, who were less adventurous there was a good old fashioned Ploughman's Lunch available.
