We work closely with the Regional HD advisor whose role is to support people and their families in the community with HD.

Run by a team of experienced nurses, carers and care practioners the Millaton team understand the unique challenges and presentation of this progressive disease. Our experienced nursing team is complemented by a physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist, specialist GP  and consultant psychiatrist all experienced in problem solving with individuals to meet each challenge and ensure that together, we achieve our goals.

Lower Millaton supports those individuals in the mid stages who may no longer be able to live in the community because of behavioural, cognitive or mental health challenges. We know that at this stage despite being physically fit and well individuals sometimes need specialist support to maintain as much independence and control of their lives as possible, whilst maintaining dignity.

In Upper Millaton you will find an enhanced focus on the nursing care of physical symptoms, whilst our specialist team are still very much involved with ensuring people are kept as well as possible both physically and mentally as their condition progresses.

Our approach to care

A respite stay to give carers a break from looking after the person with Huntington’s Disease. A respite stay can be equally reassuring for the person with Huntington’s Disease as they spend time with others facing similar challenges to their own. Many families benefit from regular, planned respite stays. A regular re-charge of energy that time away from caring responsibilities fosters enhances time spent together and can be invaluable in maintaining the care given at home. Regular respite enables the person with HD to become familiar with a care environment they know they can rely on as their needs change. Its good to know there’s back up if you hit a family crisis. An assessment stay allows our staff to assess and monitor all aspects of well being with a view to suggesting useful changes and strategies that could help a person with HD live independently for longer. We also offer longer term care to people who need on going specialist support and services to help them get the most out of life. We also have the skills and expertise to offer support and comfort in the final stages of the Disease. The Millaton Services at Kernow House truly understand the needs of people with Huntington’s and their families. Please drop in and visit or make a call if you think you may need us now or some time in the future.
