Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.
Bea Porup
Bea has many years of experience working in elderly care and both experience and training in dementia care. She has also worked extensively with people with Huntington's disease. Bea works closely with Sue, Jackie and our management team, nurses, carers and kitchen team to ensure our home has a vibrant environment with lots of events happening and varied opportunities for having both new and familiar experiences, making sure the people living here lead a rich and fulfilling life.

Employee of the Month - April
Congratulations to Care Assistant, Dorota Nakonieczna, who was named as April's Employee of the Month for always being very helpful, kind and cheerful.
Easter Celebrations
We have been busy baking Simnel cakes and decorating them, ready to take part in Barchester’s Easter Cake Competition. They were very festive and, most of all, delicious!
Easter is celebrated at Kernow House with a service delivered by our methodist volunteers and, this year, we heard the Easter story and saw pictures from tableaus displayed in a nearby village.
On Good Friday, we had hot cross buns as tradition demands and, in the afternoon, we played Easter bingo with lots of Easter eggs as prizes.
Easter Sunday was the day when we ate our cakes and the chocolate eggs we have been waiting for.

Employee of the Month - March
Ann Snelling was nominated by fellow employees for her commitment and work attitude during our recent bout of bad weather. Ann, who is a bank staff member, volunteered to come to work on the day we were most affected by the snow and icy roads. Many of our staff were unable to travel, but Ann braved the weather with the help of her husband’s four wheel drive. She said it had been a very scary journey, but she was aware of her duty of care towards those we support, so she chose to come to work. Good on you, Ann, and well done!
The Sound of Drums
Barchester sponsors our local Memory Café in Launceston, so at Christmas, we had a raffle and raised £117 for it. Pictured is Careen Harris, our General Manager, presenting Cym Downing from Launceston Memory Café with the money. Cym came in with six drums made from gas cylinders, so we had some fun playing them on our Memory Lane Community. Alan Hadley thoroughly enjoyed the lovely sounds his drum made.
Valentine's Day
In the run up to Valentine's Day, we had been busy cutting out hearts and writing messages on them. Residents, relatives and staff wrote poems or messages to their loved ones and hung them on our tree to share with anyone who wanted to read them.
On Valentine’s Day, we were joined by Man of Music, Richard Thompson. He is an excellent musician who sings and plays various instruments, and he is very much loved by all of us at Kernow. He entertained with some romantic songs and classical pieces. Richard comes several times a year and we’re already looking forward to his next visit.
