Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.
Bea Porup
Bea has many years of experience working in elderly care and both experience and training in dementia care. She has also worked extensively with people with Huntington's disease. Bea works closely with Sue, Jackie and our management team, nurses, carers and kitchen team to ensure our home has a vibrant environment with lots of events happening and varied opportunities for having both new and familiar experiences, making sure the people living here lead a rich and fulfilling life.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
Valentine's Day
In the run up to Valentine's Day, we had been busy cutting out hearts and writing messages on them. Residents, relatives and staff wrote poems or messages to their loved ones and hung them on our tree to share with anyone who wanted to read them.
On Valentine’s Day, we were joined by Man of Music, Richard Thompson. He is an excellent musician who sings and plays various instruments, and he is very much loved by all of us at Kernow. He entertained with some romantic songs and classical pieces. Richard comes several times a year and we’re already looking forward to his next visit.
Pancake Day
As tradition demands, we celebrated Pancake Day by eating lots of pancakes! Some residents made their own pancakes, whilst others were visited by a mobile trolley with a crêpe pan.
We made American pancakes on the pan and had lots of toppings to choose from, but lemon and sugar was the obvious favourite.
Pictured is resident, Alan, tossing a pancake, with Mary watching. She was a little concerned about where the pancake might go, until she realised that she was quite safe. The pancake had been made from material, so lots of people could have a go at tossing it. It was all good fun!
Employee of the Month - January
Catherine Beagley is our Employee of the Month for January at Kernow House. She is one of our Admin Assistants and is usually the first person you see when walking into Kernow, where she is stationed by the reception.
Catherine was nominated by a new member of staff, who was very impressed with the friendly welcome she received when starting at the home. Other staff members also nominated Catherine and said that she Qis always so helpful, knows everybody’s names, makes you feel at ease, always has a ready smileQ, and because ”there’s nothing Catherine won’t help with."
You might think that is a cliché, but Catherine literally does everything, from answering the phone, meeting & greeting visitors, heaving post and boxes around, all in addition to doing her admin job – and she never loses her sense of humour.
Well done, Catherine!
National Storytelling Week
We had a visit from The Tintagel Storyteller, Jill Lamede, who came because it was National Storytelling Week. She brought her two Cairn Terriers, Honeybear and Bumblebee, and they were very well-behaved. Jill told tales unknown to us and she used her props to accommodate her stories. We all enjoyed her company so much that we have already asked her to come back again.
National Chocolate Cake Day
We love our cake at Kernow and don’t usually need an excuse to eat it, but we noticed that is was National Chocolate Cake Day, so we twisted the Head Chef's arm, and he agreed to make lots of delicious chocolate cakes decorated with chocolate icing and more chocolate. It doesn’t always have to be a big well-known event for us to celebrate and, as one of our residents spelled out last year on Scrabble Day: "happiness is cake."
