Activites at Lethen Park Care Home

Activities are the cornerstone of a wholesome home experience and our Activities Coordinators are always putting their creative minds to the test by organising new and exciting social events for residents to partake in. Of course, we take into account the likes and dislikes of those we support, so if someone doesn’t feel like trying something new, there will always be something on offer to reflect their personal interests. For the people who may just prefer some peace and quiet instead, we also offer one-to-one time that can be enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee or just a simple chat – whatever they desire.

Activities Coordinator

We all know that keeping active is important. We have created a wonderful culture within the home and we work together to give residents the best possible experience. We are here to ensure that residents enjoy an environment that is both stimulating and socially active. We ensure the team knows each residents' preferences, so that we can deliver a person-centered program of events and activities. Essential to our homely feel is the strong relationships of trust we build with residents and their families and friends

Anne's Knitting

Anne often declines activities as she really enjoys being independent and planning her own day. Amanda came in one morning and Anne was at the reception and greeted Amanda with a huge smile. At this very point, Amanda was able to identify that Anne was having a great day and was really engaged in allowing others to be in her space. Amanda treated this moment like it was the priority of the day, and welcomed Anne to have her nails painted, to which she agreed.

We listened to music and had a coffee and a chat during this session. Anne was so happy and very settled. After this Anne decided to come to the knitting club. Anne was happy to join and Amanda used the information in her about me book to steer the conversation to what suited Anne. We spoke about her job knitting for a company and her love for knitting jumpers.

Anne was also able to help Amanda with her knitting skills and support Amanda.

Anne had an incredible time and her smile showed so bright, and we have agreed to move forward if Anne has great days and feels confident that she can join Amanda any day. Anne was delighted.

Amanda even printed off the pictures for Anne to have in her room. Anne has agreed to me writing this and Has agreed to me using this as a showcase moment.

Mary had a wonderful time visiting Stonehaven Beach

Mary had a wonderful time visiting Stonehaven Beach

During the past few activities, Mary has been declining to attend these and Amanda has been wondering what we could have done to encourage Mary out.

During our individual room visit, as part of resident of the day, Amanda used the About me book with Mary and spoke about her love for The Beach. Mary agreed that on a nice day we could go because she forgot about that. This even extended to her wanting to go on a scenic road via the Larhilloch where she sometimes had food with her family.

On the outing, Mary was delighted to watch the waves from the bus, sing songs with Amanda and then had a delightful bag of chips with Salt and Vinegar.

Mary was so delighted and her smile was so bright. We had a wonderful time.

We have agreed to do this again in the future.

Fun for Valerie

Fun for Valerie

Valerie had a wonderful morning at Lethen Park with the support of her beloved husband, Mike. Recently, Valarie has been spending time in her room due to mobility issues and waiting for a new wheelchair. Today, Valerie was in a very pleasant mood and was feeling so confident in herself that her beloved husband, Mike, helped her attend the daily events. Valerie really enjoyed the therapy dog visit by Toby and was so happy to interact with the dog and was able to enjoy Toby in her lap.

This brought Valerie a great sense of pride and joy and a huge smile on her face. Valerie enjoyed the texture of the dog's fur and the warmth of his fur. After this activity, this then led to Valerie attending the Knitting and Nattering club with her husband, Mike. Valerie enjoyed chatting with Mike about her love for walking, her love for nice weather. During the Club, Valerie was not able to participate in the knitting however really enjoyed the nattering element and holding the ball of wool for other residents.

Valerie was so very calm and relaxed and really enjoyed this wonderful morning so very much. Amanda followed up on this activity by printing off the photos and presenting them to Valerie as a reminder about her wonderful day away from her room.

Fitness at Lethen Park

Fitness at Lethen Park

Through the month of May, Amanda has been working on the physical fitness of our residents and Lewis has been working really hard on his upper body strength. Lewis and Amanda designed a movement and fitness plan together and agreed on some objectives. These were to feel less stiff in his shoulders and to maintain his muscle mass and, more importantly, to have fun.

We agreed on using 0.5kg weights and focused on some really gentle movements, including: hammer curls, alternating arm raises, shoulder press and shoulder shrugs.

Lewis has been working hard and had a great time with Amanda, and we continue to focus on our movements and are moving up to 1kg very soon. Lewis gained a great sense of confidence and really enjoyed challenging himself in a meaningful and powerful way. Amanda and Lewis had so much fun too.

Berli was happy to see her hand painted craft work hanging on the easter decoration trees later that afternoon.

We had a brilliant day.

Thank you Jim!

Thank you Jim!

Jim, our resident ambassador, has been very busy supporting the activities team. Jim has taken a great interest in learning about computers and has been working closely with Amanda on a weekly basis.

Amanda and Jim have been using the weekly planner to practice typing skills, look at using a laptop.

Jim has found this time exciting and fun and has gained confidence in his abilities. We have also had a great time together as Jim has been supporting Amanda with her spelling. Jim says, “When I see the red line under the words, I know Amanda has made a mistake, so I help her fix it.”

Amanda says, “Jim is a inspiration and is such a great support to the home in many ways.”

Time in the garden!

Time in the garden!

Patricia is a new resident with us and has a wonderful passion for the garden.

Patricia really enjoyed time in the garden singing and relaxing. During the gardening club we spoke about our plans for the garden and all the wonderful things that we were looking to achieve. Pat really had a great time helping Amanda finalise some plans and suggest great options.

Patricia was so happy and content during this activity.

Gentleman's Club

Gentleman's Club

Gentlemen's club was held in the garden on a sunny but cold day. Davie, Jim, James and Davie had a brilliant time. During this time we do a question and answer session on the History of Aberdeen. We then went on to sing some favourite tunes.

We really had a great day sitting in the garden and enjoying each other's company.
