Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home

Pancake Day

We had a “flippin” good time on Shrove Tuesday at Lucerne House. Residents all enjoyed having a go at flipping some pancakes, which soon turned into a healthy competition and lots of laughter.

Cake Donation

We were delighted to receive a donation of cupcakes this month. The team at The Mill on the Exe Pub in Exeter got in touch as they are spreading joy to frontline and key workers around the city. The team at Lucerne House were delighted and really touched by this gesture and want to express a massive thank you to all the team at The Mill on the Exe. The cakes were delicious and enjoyed by both residents and staff.

Valentine's Crafts

Love is in the air at Lucerne House! Residents and staff have all been getting prepared for Valentine’s Day. To mark the occasion, we have been making decorations to display in our communal lounges and dining areas. The activity certainly stirred conversation, with residents reminiscing about romantic moments and past Valentine’s Days they had celebrated.

Vaccines at Lucerne House

2020 has been a difficult year for all of us, with the many restrictions we have all had to live by, but towards the end of the year, there was light at the end of the tunnel. Staff at Lucerne House had begun to receive their 1st dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in December 2020, and this was a real positive step forward in the fight to eradicate the virus from all of our lives.

Though this was cause for celebration alone, we were truly granted an extra special Christmas gift when GP, Sam Hilton from Ide Lane Surgery, and his wife, Emma Hilton, a trained nurse, visited the home on Christmas Eve to administer the 1st dose of the vaccine to all of our residents.

This was something that the pair felt very passionately about, and our residents were extremely grateful for them coming to do this. Sam and Emma went that extra mile too by donating any money they earn doing the vaccines to Action for Children, a charity that provides emotional and practical support and care for children and young people.

From everyone here at Lucerne House, we want to send our heartfelt appreciation to Sam and Emma for all they have done for us and wish them all the best for 2021.

Mince Pie Donation

We have felt truly blessed with all the kind messages and contacts from our local community during 2020.

Residents and staff have all seen how this year’s events have had an effect on everyone across the country and globally, but having those messages of warmth and care have really lifted our spirits.

Recently, we were given something extra special: Elaine Gibbs, mother in-law to Sophia Gibbs, a Senior Carer, entered us into a mince pie donation draw. Elaine entered us because she felt all the hard work that the care staff do, on top of trying to spread some festive cheer throughout the home, made us the perfect recipient of her entry.

We were so touched and couldn’t believe our fortune when we were picked as the winners and received over 150 mince pies. Residents have been enjoying these at events, such as mulled wine and mince pie activities, during music and carol events and with a nice hot drink at social groups.

We would all like to thank Elaine Gibbs for her generosity and hope she can come and visit the home once we all start to see a little more normality some time in 2021.

Elf Day

It has been a strange year for all of us, and we haven’t all been able to do the things we are normally able to do, but all of 2020’s obstacles weren’t going to stop our festive elves from making an appearance on Elf Day.

Staff and residents donned their best elf outfits and t-shirts and had a fun-filled day marking the occasion. Elf Day was created to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society which is a cause very close to our hearts here at Lucerne House.
