Our Activities Coordinators are constantly striving to mentally and physically stimulate those we support by organising group and individual activities for anyone and everyone to participate in. There are regular outings in the minibus to nearby places of interest, as well as visits from the Donkey sanctuary, musicians and entertainers. We also host evenings such as our Cheese & Wine evenings and BBQ's in the summer, that we encourage relatives to come to. Activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home, so it is essential that our team are dedicated to ensuring that residents are entertained. We encourage our residents to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can to ensure that life at West Abbey is fun and active for all.

Hello, I'm Ryan and I joined West Abbey in 2018 in Hotel Services team where I was nominated 2 years running in the Barchester Care Awards by residents and their families. I moved to Activities in June 2021 which suits my outgoing personality. The team call me the 'IT hero'

Celebrating life at West Abbey Care Home

Brimsmore Garden Centre

We enjoyed a lovely outing to Brimsmore Garden Centre today! Our residents had a great time browsing the shops, having a little look around and picking up a few things along the way. After all that shopping, we headed to the café for a well-deserved cuppa!

Match Day

A special trip to the pub today for two of our residents, who headed out with our manager to watch Tottenham take on their opponents! One of our residents is a huge Spurs fan, so what better way to enjoy the game than with a drink, some good company and the atmosphere of the local pub!

Classic Car Show

We hosted our Classic Car Show & BBQ, in partnership with Yeovil Car Club. Our car park was transformed with a wonderful collection of classic and much-loved cars for our residents, relatives, colleagues and visitors to enjoy. A huge thank you to Yeovil Car Club for joining us and bringing such an impressive selection of vehicles, and to our West Abbey kitchen team for putting on a delicious BBQ!

Ice Cream Alfresco

Ice Cream in the Sunshine! Our residents enjoyed a lovely trip out on the minibus during the heatwave for a delicious alfresco ice cream at a local restaurant! Lots of smiles, sunshine and sweet treats - the perfect way to cool down and enjoy a summer’s day!

Cafe and Shopping

During a recent outing, our gentlemen set themselves the practical task of visiting the cash machine, while our ladies enjoyed a spot of shopping in town. They returned with a selection of new clothes, handbags, and a few well-deserved treats, making for a fun and memorable day. The outing provided an excellent opportunity for residents to make their own choices, manage everyday tasks, socialise within the local community, and enjoy time away from the home. Whether completing essential errands or indulging in a little retail therapy.

Dog Show

We were delighted to host our first-ever West Abbey Community Dog Show in Yeovil, and what a success it was! With over 30 fabulous dogs joining us, the day was full of wagging tails, smiles, laughter and plenty of community spirit. Our four-legged guests were treated to their very own pup cups, while visitors enjoyed refreshments and delicious home-baked goodies

Donkey Sanctuary

Our residents had a fantastic day at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth! We enjoyed meeting the donkeys, soaking up the sunshine and finishing our lovely day with an ice cream. The trip was a special request from one of our ladies, and we were so happy to make her wish come true

One to One Time

Sometimes, a little one-to-one time can mean so much. Simon wanted to hop on the bus into town, enjoy a coffee and treated to a lunch out in town. While out, Simon then asked if he could take a walk around St John’s Church, sharing his love and fascination for history along the way. Just a couple of hours doing the things he wanted to do brought Simon so much enjoyment and independence.

Summer BBQ

This week, our residents had a wonderful time at the West Abbey Summer BBQ! Everyone enjoyed a delicious selection of home-cooked BBQ favourites, freshly prepared with care by our fantastic kitchen team. The wonderful food, sunshine, and great company made it a truly special afternoon. A huge thank you to the talented Jan McNeil, who kept everyone entertained with an amazing live performance. Residents were singing along, tapping their feet, and enjoying every moment of the music.

Flower Arranging

Our residents recently enjoyed a wonderful flower arranging activity, getting creative with a beautiful selection of fresh blooms. It was lovely to see everyone sharing ideas, arranging colourful displays and reminiscing about their favourite flowers and gardens.

Cookery School

What a lovely morning our residents had at Lesley Waters Cookery School in Shaftesbury! Our resident’s daughter, Lesley Waters, kindly invited us to her Cookery School, where we were warmly welcomed and treated to freshly baked scones and a delicious orange cake, along with plenty of tea and coffee. It was a wonderful morning filled with good food, lots of lovely conversation and plenty of smiles.

We were incredibly touched to receive this beautiful hamper and such a heartfelt message from the family of one of our residents. Our wonderful staff work tirelessly to provide not only exceptional care, but also kindness, dignity, companionship and a genuine sense of family to every person we look after.

Weekly Fitness Class

Looking for a gentle way to stay active? Join our weekly seated exercise class with Daniel from Sit and Strengthen. A fun, supportive session designed to help you move more, feel stronger and boost your confidence, all from the comfort of a chair!

World War Jeep

Our residents enjoyed a wonderful time welcoming a beautifully restored World War II Jeep, kindly brought in by the daughter and son-in-law of one of our residents.

The visit sparked many treasured memories, with residents sharing stories, reminiscing about wartime experiences, and enjoying the opportunity to get up close to such an iconic vehicle. It was a fantastic afternoon filled with smiles, conversation, and reflection.

All Aboard

Our residents enjoyed a wonderful day out on the water as we set sail from Weymouth Harbour and headed to Portland. After docking, everyone enjoyed a delicious picnic on board while taking in the beautiful coastal views and fresh sea air. The highlight of the day was the opportunity for both residents and staff to have a go at sailing the boat, creating lots of excitement, laughter and unforgettable memories.
