Activities at Appletree Grange Care Home

Appletree Grange marked International Dog Day with a very special visitor, Trixie the dog, who came in for a heart-warming afternoon with residents.

The moment Twinkle arrived, smiles spread across the room as residents took turns stroking and cuddling her soft fur. The visit brought a wonderful sense of calm and joy, proving once again just how much comfort and happiness a furry friend can bring.

Trixie may have only visited for an afternoon, but the joy she left behind lasted much longer. As John, our new resident, said: “This reminds him so much of the dog he has always had growing up."

Appletree Grange welcomed a truly unforgettable visitor this month, as Zoo Discovery brought their mobile petting zoo straight to our door!

Residents came face to face with Flash the Tortoise, a real-life snake, a many-legged millipede, a expertly disguised stick insect, and a tiny, captivating gecko. Touching and holding the animals sparked wide-eyed wonder, laughter, and cherished memories, filling the room with pure energy and excitement.

A magical, one-of-a-kind experience that reminded us all how the simplest moments of childlike joy can still bring the biggest smiles. As Jean said with a smile: “I would love to keep the animals to myself,” and everyone around burst out with laughter." 

Residents at Appletree Grange enjoyed a truly special day out at Beamish Museum, journeying through its beautifully recreated themed villages and stepping back in time together. The sights and sounds of decades gone by sparked wonderful moments of nostalgia and conversation, with residents recalling memories from their younger years. A delicious spread of sandwiches, snacks, and cups of tea and coffee made the outing even more enjoyable along the way.

Outings like these offer more than just a change of scenery, they reconnect residents with cherished memories and each other. As John shared afterwards: "It felt like stepping into my childhood again."

On 26th June 2026, Appletree Grange threw open its doors to welcome residents' families and loved ones for a very special occasion, a family meeting and grand celebration marking the successful completion of the home's magnificent WOW Project refurbishment.

Appletree Grange has been completely revitalised, boasting stunning new communal spaces and stylish lounges, a spa-style bathroom, a brand new hair salon, and a state-of-the-art magic table for residents. The home has never looked or felt better, and the Grand Opening celebration gave families the opportunity to see every incredible change for themselves, enjoy refreshments, and celebrate this landmark milestone alongside residents and staff.

The day was also a wonderful opportunity for the home to hold its family meeting, reaffirming Appletree Grange's deep commitment to open communication, transparency, and genuine partnership with every family. Families were updated on activities, events, and important news from the home, and were warmly encouraged to share their thoughts, feedback, and ideas, because at Appletree Grange, families are not just visitors, they are an essential and valued part of everything the home does.    

Residents have been enjoying some relaxing and creative time with painting and colouring activities, and the results have been absolutely beautiful!

From bright colours to delicate designs, everyone had the opportunity to express themselves, unwind, and have fun. It was lovely to see residents so focused, sharing ideas, and taking pride in their artwork.

These activities are not only enjoyable but also support wellbeing, improve concentration, and encourage creativity in a calm and therapeutic way.

A wonderful session filled with colour, smiles, and creativity!

Appletree Grange celebrated World Photography Day with a wonderful afternoon of nostalgia and creativity. Residents got hands-on, holding real cameras and reminiscing about photography old and new, while word puzzles featuring terms like camera, lens, and frame kept minds active and engaged.

Paintings of vintage cameras and beautiful nature photography added to the atmosphere, sparking plenty of conversation and shared memories throughout the room.

It was a lovely reminder that every photograph tells a story, and today, our residents got to relive a few of their own. As Charlie said: “I had a Canon camera when younger and loved to take pictures with it." 

Appletree Grange celebrated resident Alfreda's 93rd birthday this month, marking a wonderful milestone with cake, balloons, and plenty of cheer from staff and fellow residents. The whole home came together to sing happy birthday, filling the room with warmth and celebration as Alfreda took in the special occasion.

Birthdays like Alfreda's are a beautiful reminder of the incredible lives our residents have lived, and continue to live, every single day. As Alfreda said: “Thank you for celebrating me on my birthday”.         

Appletree Grange came alive this July as residents welcomed their families and friends for a Summer Garden Party & BBQ! The garden was filled with sunshine, laughter, and the smell of sizzling burgers and sausages as loved ones old and new gathered together. Michaela from Musical Memories treated everyone to a live performance of old classic songs, with residents and guests singing along and swaying to the music. The day was all about connection, bringing generations together for an afternoon that felt like a true family celebration.

Days like this remind us how much joy comes from simply being together. As Valerie put it: "It's the best kind of afternoon, good food, good music, and my family by my side."

On 11th June 2026, Appletree Grange came together to celebrate something truly extraordinary, the 100th birthday of our wonderful resident Raymond!

To honour this once-in-a-lifetime milestone, we threw Raymond a spectacular birthday party right here in the home, complete with a gorgeous buffet of sandwiches, sausages, scones with jam and butter, and mince pies, and a fabulous live singer who had everyone singing, clapping, and dancing with joy. Raymond was also presented with a congratulatory letter from His Majesty the King, a moment that moved everyone in the room.

Raymond's sons and daughters-in-law joined us for the celebration, making the day even more special and deeply personal.
Celebrations like this are so important, they remind our residents that their lives, their milestones, and their stories truly matter. For Raymond, the party brought enormous joy, pride, and a profound sense of being loved and valued by everyone around him. His smile throughout the entire afternoon said everything.

Raymond said: "I never thought I'd see 100. What a wonderful day."         

Recently our residents enjoyed a delightful and interactive “Pick the Duck” exercise, and what a fantastic time it was!

With concentration and a steady hand, residents used fishing rods to hook and pick colourful ducks—bringing out smiles, laughter, and a little friendly competition. This activity not only sparked joy but also supported hand-eye coordination, focus, and gentle movement.

It was lovely to see everyone so engaged, encouraging one another and celebrating each successful “catch”!

Moments like these remind us how simple activities can create meaningful experiences, boost wellbeing, and bring people together.   

Appletree Grange took residents on a journey around the world this August with our Holiday in the Home themed event! It all began during life enrichment sessions, where residents shared the destinations closest to their hearts, from Claire's love of Australia to Nancy's pride in her native Italy.

Staff transformed the home into country-themed stations complete with decorations, activities, and dishes inspired by each destination, while residents and families explored facts, colouring, and puzzles along the way. The day was rounded off beautifully with a live musical performance from Alex Hall, singing classics from the 1900s.

Days like this show how a little imagination can turn our home into a world of adventure, without anyone needing to pack a bag. As Maureen said: “I really enjoyed visiting other countries in the home today, and the musical performance by the Singer."   

Appletree Grange celebrated resident Nancy's 97th birthday in style this July, surrounded by her twin daughters and other beloved relatives who came together to mark the special occasion. The whole home joined in, singing happy birthday as Nancy was presented with a beautiful cake and balloons. Nancy, well known around the home for her love of bingo, colouring, knitting, and a good chat, beamed with joy throughout the celebrations.

Milestone birthdays like Nancy's are a wonderful reminder of the rich lives our residents have lived and continue to live. As Nancy said with a smile: "Surrounded by family, what more could I ask for?"

Happy 91st Birthday to our Wonderful Margaret!

June 22nd was an absolutely beautiful day here at Appletree Grange as we celebrated a very special lady, our gorgeous resident Margaret, on her incredible 91st birthday! The dining room was dressed to perfection with balloons and beautiful decorations, the table was set for everyone, and when Margaret walked in the whole room erupted into the most wonderful rendition of Happy Birthday you have ever heard!

Residents and staff sang their hearts out, smiles were absolutely everywhere, and Margaret glowed from ear to ear throughout every single moment of her special day! 

And then came the birthday cake shared with every single resident around that table alongside a celebratory glass of wine or juice to toast to our incredible Margaret! 91 years of the most wonderful woman and every single one of those years has been worth celebrating!  

We made the most of the lovely weather as our wonderful residents spent time outdoors clearing weeds and planting seeds. It was such a heart-warming moment filled with laughter, teamwork, and shared memories.

As they worked, many residents fondly reflected on how they used to care for their own gardens. These conversations brought back so many special memories and truly made the day even more meaningful.

Sonia smiled and said, “I can’t wait for it to sprout.” Sylvia added, “We have to take time to nourish the seeds if we want them to flourish.”

Moments like these remind us how simple activities can bring so much joy, connection, and purpose. We’re already looking forward to watching our little garden grow!            

Appletree Grange had the absolute pleasure of celebrating a very special occasion recently; the 91st birthday of their wonderful resident, Sylvia!

It was a beautiful day filled with smiles, laughter, and cherished moments shared between Sylvia, her loving family, and the dedicated staff of the home. The celebration was a true reflection of Sylvia's warm and joyful spirit, with the room brimming with love from everyone present.

As always Sylvia truly made the day shine! Surrounded by those closest to her, she was treated to a party befitting someone who has brought so much happiness to everyone at Appletree Grange.
