Activities at Appletree Grange Care Home
Our teams are trained to enrich the lives of residents through stimulating the mind, body and soul, and taking the time to learn about each person to ensure everyone receives support that adds enrichment to their life.
Our Activities Coordinator is constantly arranging new activities to stimulate and catch the imagination of our residents. From visiting entertainers to a regular craft table to outings on the minibus, there is always something for our residents to keep them entertained. Our Activities Coordinator also takes the time to sit with each resident and go through a life history so they get to know what the likes and dislikes of each individual are and can tailor the activities to suit them. A monthly residents meeting is held to get the views of the residents and to get suggestions from them and their families about what they would like to do and everything that can be done to accommodate their requests is done.

Margaret's 91st birthday
Happy 91st Birthday to our Wonderful Margaret!
June 22nd was an absolutely beautiful day here at Appletree Grange as we celebrated a very special lady, our gorgeous resident Margaret, on her incredible 91st birthday! The dining room was dressed to perfection with balloons and beautiful decorations, the table was set for everyone, and when Margaret walked in the whole room erupted into the most wonderful rendition of Happy Birthday you have ever heard!
Residents and staff sang their hearts out, smiles were absolutely everywhere, and Margaret glowed from ear to ear throughout every single moment of her special day!
And then came the birthday cake shared with every single resident around that table alongside a celebratory glass of wine or juice to toast to our incredible Margaret! 91 years of the most wonderful woman and every single one of those years has been worth celebrating!

A beautiful day in the garden
We made the most of the lovely weather as our wonderful residents spent time outdoors clearing weeds and planting seeds. It was such a heart-warming moment filled with laughter, teamwork, and shared memories.
As they worked, many residents fondly reflected on how they used to care for their own gardens. These conversations brought back so many special memories and truly made the day even more meaningful.
Sonia smiled and said, “I can’t wait for it to sprout.” Sylvia added, “We have to take time to nourish the seeds if we want them to flourish.”
Moments like these remind us how simple activities can bring so much joy, connection, and purpose. We’re already looking forward to watching our little garden grow!

Smiles, family and cake!
Appletree Grange had the absolute pleasure of celebrating a very special occasion recently; the 91st birthday of their wonderful resident, Sylvia!
It was a beautiful day filled with smiles, laughter, and cherished moments shared between Sylvia, her loving family, and the dedicated staff of the home. The celebration was a true reflection of Sylvia's warm and joyful spirit, with the room brimming with love from everyone present.
As always Sylvia truly made the day shine! Surrounded by those closest to her, she was treated to a party befitting someone who has brought so much happiness to everyone at Appletree Grange.
Sensory session
Our residents had a wonderful time during our sensory session today! They explored a variety of textures and items from our rummage boxes, including the unique sensory feel of a hedgehog and other engaging materials.
These activities help to stimulate memories, encourage interaction, and bring lots of smiles. It was lovely to see everyone so relaxed, curious, and enjoying the experience together. Moments like these truly make a difference.
Resident of over twenty years!
At Appletree Grange, we are proud to celebrate one of our wonderful residents who has called Appletree Grange home for over 20 years. She is a strong Catholic and a true Newcastle local. To gently gain her attention, when staff walk into her room, we simply call her name and remind her that she’s from Geordie. Instantly, she responds with the most beautiful smile — one that truly warms the heart and lights up the room.
We are committed to ensuring that all residents feel valued, included, and engaged, including those nursed in bed. Our dedicated staff take time to deliver meaningful 1-to-1 activities, thoughtfully tailored to each resident’s individual needs, preferences, and life history. It’s these special moments and personal connections that make our home such a caring and loving place to be.
Residents Family Meeting and Grand Opening
On 26th June 2026, Appletree Grange threw open its doors to welcome residents' families and loved ones for a very special occasion, a family meeting and grand celebration marking the successful completion of the home's magnificent WOW Project refurbishment.
Appletree Grange has been completely revitalised, boasting stunning new communal spaces and stylish lounges, a spa-style bathroom, a brand new hair salon, and a state-of-the-art magic table for residents. The home has never looked or felt better, and the Grand Opening celebration gave families the opportunity to see every incredible change for themselves, enjoy refreshments, and celebrate this landmark milestone alongside residents and staff.
The day was also a wonderful opportunity for the home to hold its family meeting, reaffirming Appletree Grange's deep commitment to open communication, transparency, and genuine partnership with every family. Families were updated on activities, events, and important news from the home, and were warmly encouraged to share their thoughts, feedback, and ideas, because at Appletree Grange, families are not just visitors, they are an essential and valued part of everything the home does.
Creativity in Full Colour!
Residents have been enjoying some relaxing and creative time with painting and colouring activities, and the results have been absolutely beautiful!
From bright colours to delicate designs, everyone had the opportunity to express themselves, unwind, and have fun. It was lovely to see residents so focused, sharing ideas, and taking pride in their artwork.
These activities are not only enjoyable but also support wellbeing, improve concentration, and encourage creativity in a calm and therapeutic way.
A wonderful session filled with colour, smiles, and creativity!
Celebrating 91 years!
Celebrating 91 Wonderful Years! Today we had the absolute pleasure of celebrating our lovely resident, Sylvia, as she turns 91! It was a beautiful day filled with smiles, laughter, and special moments shared with her family and our dedicated staff.
Sylvia truly made the day shine, and it was heart-warming to see her surrounded by so much love. Happy 91st Birthday, Sylvia.
Healthy Heart Event
Healthy Heart Event Highlights: We had a wonderful Healthy Heart event at Appletree Grange, filled with learning, healthy choices, and movement. A big thank you to our Head Chef and kitchen team for preparing such a colourful selection of fruits and salads. The presentation was eye-catching and clearly showed how healthy food can look and feel appealing.
Our appreciation also goes to the staff and our guest speaker from Age UK for their preparation and for delivering an excellent talk on nutrition and its benefits. It was informative and encouraged positive lifestyle choices. To finish the day, we enjoyed some gentle chair yoga, bringing relaxation and smiles all round.

Bingo session
The home buzzed with excitement as residents gathered for our much-loved bingo session. The tables were set, numbers were ready, and friendly competition filled the room. Residents enthusiastically called out their numbers and encouraged one another throughout the game.
Laughter could be heard across the lounge, and many residents shared memories of playing bingo in their younger years. One resident proudly shouted “Bingo!”, and the whole room cheered in celebration. Small prizes were awarded, but the true reward was the sense of connection, inclusion, and enjoyment experienced by everyone who took part.
Raymond’s 100 Years Birthday
On 11th June 2026, Appletree Grange came together to celebrate something truly extraordinary, the 100th birthday of our wonderful resident Raymond!
To honour this once-in-a-lifetime milestone, we threw Raymond a spectacular birthday party right here in the home, complete with a gorgeous buffet of sandwiches, sausages, scones with jam and butter, and mince pies, and a fabulous live singer who had everyone singing, clapping, and dancing with joy. Raymond was also presented with a congratulatory letter from His Majesty the King, a moment that moved everyone in the room.
Raymond's sons and daughters-in-law joined us for the celebration, making the day even more special and deeply personal.
Celebrations like this are so important, they remind our residents that their lives, their milestones, and their stories truly matter. For Raymond, the party brought enormous joy, pride, and a profound sense of being loved and valued by everyone around him. His smile throughout the entire afternoon said everything.
Raymond said: "I never thought I'd see 100. What a wonderful day."
Fun & Focus with Our Duck Picking Activity!
Recently our residents enjoyed a delightful and interactive “Pick the Duck” exercise, and what a fantastic time it was!
With concentration and a steady hand, residents used fishing rods to hook and pick colourful ducks—bringing out smiles, laughter, and a little friendly competition. This activity not only sparked joy but also supported hand-eye coordination, focus, and gentle movement.
It was lovely to see everyone so engaged, encouraging one another and celebrating each successful “catch”!
Moments like these remind us how simple activities can create meaningful experiences, boost wellbeing, and bring people together.
Moments at Appletree
At our home, we are passionate about supporting our residents to remain as independent as possible for as long as they can. One of the ways we do this is by encouraging them to take part in everyday activities—like shopping for themselves.
For many of our lovely residents, choosing their own items, making decisions, and being involved in the process brings a real sense of purpose, confidence, and belonging.
Nearly 100!
Age Is Just a Number at Appletree Grange, one of our incredible residents, who is nearly 100 years young, continues to inspire us every day by actively engaging in the activities he truly enjoys. With a wonderful sense of enthusiasm and determination, he still takes part in meaningful activities that bring him joy, purpose, and a sense of independence. Whether it’s spending time chatting, engaging in familiar routines, or enjoying his favourite pastimes, or a friendly game of snookers, he reminds us that a fulfilling life doesn’t stop with age.
We believe in supporting our residents to live life their way, focusing on strengths, interests, and personal choice. Seeing our residents continue to do what they love is a true reflection of person-centred care in action.
