Activities at Drummond Grange Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Katie Nicolson

Head of Activities

Katie Nicolson is our Head of activities here at Drummond since August 2023 beforehand she worked as an activity assistant in the home for two years. Before coming to Drummond Katie has worked in many care roles over the years and studied Psychology and Sociology at Queen Margaret’s University and was awarded a Degree of Bachelor of science in Psychology and Sociology at the start of 2022. Katie loves being part of the Activity department here at Drummond Grange and bringing new and exciting opportunities and experiences to the residents. When she’s not at work Katie is a local Girl Guide leader and youth leader for her churches youth group.

Life at Drummond Grange Care Home

St Patrick's Day

Residents and staff at local care home Drummond Grange in Lasswade celebrated all things Irish for their St Patrick’s Day celebrations this week.

Saint Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, ceilidh’s, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish.

Residents and staff at local care home Drummond Grange in Lasswade celebrated all things Irish for their St Patrick’s Day celebrations this week.

Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, ceilidh’s, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish.

In honour of the patron saint of Ireland, staff, residents and guests at the home marked the day by dressing up in green clothing and green accessories, Learning some Irish words and phrases and dances, eating traditional Irish. Giving the celebrations a gourmet twist, the chef at the home prepared of special menu traditional Irish dishes such as bangers and mash, Shepherd's Pie, potato bread and black pudding.

World Book Day

Residents at Barchester’s Drummond Grange care home celebrated World Book Day by revisiting a book published by one of the homes residents, Mr Martin Lawson.  Mr Lawson’s book ‘Guide to the Outer Hebrides’ exploring from Barra northwards to the Isle of Lewis has recently been updated and improved before being re-released with new colour images throughout.  Residents were also able to share stories and fond memories of their favourite books from childhood to current and how authors are able to create spellbinding stories to keep the reader hooked.

St David's Day

Celebrations were underway at Barchester’s Drummond Grange care home, in Lasswade as residents and staff marked St. David’s Day.   

The home was in high spirits as they celebrated the national day of Wales with making of Welsh cakes and then enjoying them with a cup of tea. In honour of the traditional feast day and the country’s patron saint, residents and staff were treated to traditional Welsh food and tucked in to the cakes.

Home welcome 1st visitor back inside

Staff welcomed the first visitor back into the Home to visit his Father.  Derek Hood came along to visit dad Jimmy Hood a resident within Drummond Grange.

Derek said he couldn’t believe the welcome he got and that it was like greeting old friends and family alike.  Seeing Dad on a Pod visit was good but this is even better.

Eleanor Wilson General Manager of Drummond Grange Care Home said: “It was very emotional greeting the Derek back after such a long time that there was a few tears from us as well.  We look forward to greeting many more visitors back into the Home.”

2nd vaccine for home

Staff members and Residents at Drummond Grange Care Home in Lasswade have received their 2nd Covid19 Vaccine Jab.

Staff Member Andrew Deakin one of the Carers in the Memory Lane unit says of the Jab ‘I didn’t feel a thing and hopefully things will get back to normal quickly’.

Eleanor Wilson General Manager of Drummond Grange Care Home said: ‘It has been a long road within the Care Industry and getting the 2nd Jab for all the staff and residents is the only way forward, I speak for all of us here at Drummond Grange Care Home when I say that I’m looking forward to the day we can open our doors to everyone again”
