Activities at Emily Jackson House Care Home

Our activities team continues to offer a wide range of activities to both mentally and physically stimulate our residents. Our activities include one to one shopping, group outings in our minibus, and regularly attending our local church and bowling club. We also enjoy the entertainment from the musicians who come and visit us as well as our PAT dog. We have a range of activities so residents with all abilities and talents can join in activities and social gatherings. We encourage families and volunteers to share the joy with us by taking part in our social events as well.

Life at Emily Jackson House Care Home

Writing Home to Loved Ones

The current situation is challenging for many, not being able to see friends and family and for some being trapped inside their homes. We are combatting loneliness in the elderly and are helping our residents keep in contact with their loved ones, not just by video call and the telephone, but through the good old fashion method of pen and paper!

Our residents regularly receive letters from friends and family, but may struggle to write a letter to reply. We have been helping them write letters and cards back, by scribing for them or helping them to read their first letter and to think of a reply. We will then stamp and post the letter for the resident.

Contacting loved ones

So sometimes its the traditional form of social media that mean the most, receiving and writing to loved ones. Our team understands how important communication is and do all they can to assist our residents with this.

Music is the Best Therapy

Tracey runs a music therapy session twice a month for our residents; she focuses on the movement to music and how she can draw out emotion through the use of music. Tracey is a good friend to many of the residents and staff, as she has been entertaining our residents with music therapy for many years.

Tracey runs a 1 hour session where she uses props such as, pom-poms, musical instruments, plates and sticks, to encourage the residents to dance and play along to the music. Tracey’s session also focuses on exercise and movement of the body; she encourages the residents to move their legs and arms around with the props to stimulate their muscles.

Music engages residents living with advanced dementia; some of our residents will not interact with any other activity, apart from Tracey’s sessions, because she knows what music they like and how to encourage them to engage. Tracey takes time to learn each resident’s individual personalities and dementia to adapt her session for them.

Cocktails and Mocktails

Residents at Emily Jackson House were treated to an afternoon of cocktails and mocktails by Management and staff at the home. The residents enjoyed it so much the team agreed it must be repeated very soon.

Fury Friends

At Emily Jackson House, we love having animals come to visit our residents; the residents love to look at them, stroke them and feed them. Animals have a lot of patience and can bring so much joy and excitement to the residents. We recently discovered Sharon and her Guinea Pigs. Sharon brought some babies and adult Guinea Pigs to show our residents. She set up in the communal areas and gave out the Guinea Pigs to the residents in there. Our Activities Team then took the adult Guinea Pigs to see all of the residents who were in their rooms. They loved petting them and feeding them celery sticks – probably too many!

The residents enjoyed the company of the Guinea Pigs so much that we have booked them to return on a monthly basis. We are looking forward to seeing Sharon and her fury friends again once lockdown is over!
