Activities at Fountains Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Defibrillator donated from fundraising efforts

Fountains residents and staff were very moved by the kindness of the children at Woodlands Infant School. It was a wonderful surprise to receive a defibrillator from the school this week.

Fountains and Woodland infant school had already built a relationship when children sent Christmas cards and heartwarming videos of them singing Christmas carols, which our residents loved.

It seems the School Council (pupils ranging between 4 and 7 years old) decided they wanted to not only work with their community but also give back to their community, so they came up with the idea to host a special charity activity – a ‘Danceathon’.

The children created sponsor forms and sent them out. Then they put their dancing shoes on and in no time managed to raise the money for not one but TWO defibrillators! One will be based at the Layca Centre and the other they donated to us here at Fountains.

They should be applauded for their kindness and creativity, and we are very grateful for all of their hard work and generosity which will not only benefit Fountains residents, families and visitors but also the local community

A big thank you to all at Woodlands Infant School for their thoughtfulness.

National Ice Cream Day

Fountains residents and staff had a lovely surprise when Mr Yummy’s ice cream van arrived to celebrate National Ice Cream Day with us.

Residents couldn’t wait to get outside and select their favourite flavours'. From ice lollies to ice cream sundaes to classic 99s… Mr Yummy was fully-stocked with treats for everyone.

It made yet another sunny day even more special and we were so grateful for this deliciously cooling surprise from our good friend Nazir (Mr Yummy). And what’s more, Mr Yummy treated everyone!

“Thank you Nazir” for such a kind and caring gesture. We really appreciate your support.

With grateful best wishes from everyone here at Fountains.

Outdoor art class

What better way to enjoy the sunshine than by taking part in an outdoor art class!

Fountains residents and staff love every opportunity to get outside and enjoy the glorious weather that's finally arrived.

Relaxing as we paint, listening to the sounds of nature, all under a cloudless sky – the perfect opportunity to be creative, unwind and catch up with our friends. Lovely!

Care Awards divisional winner

Lorraine Shannon at Fountains care home has been crowned with the “Community Engagement Award” for the Central Division in the Barchester Care Awards 2021 and is through to the national round of judging.

The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile and categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ to ‘Activities Co-ordinator of the Year’

More than 2900 nominations were received from homes and hospitals. All entries were a very high standard and Lorraine Shannon is over the moon to have been named the winner for the Central Division, beating hundreds of nominees.

As the winner for the Central Division Lorraine Shannon is through to the national finals in which the overall winner is decided. She will join winners from across the UK at a special awards event in October to celebrate their outstanding achievements and discover if they have won a national award.

General Manager, Sonia Tenniswood presented Lorraine with her certificate and said how proud everyone was of this amazing achievement. Lorraine has worked extremely hard supporting the community and working alongside other services, particularly throughout the pandemic.

Projects she has worked on have been collecting crisp packets to make bivi bags for the homeless, volunteering in the community with Shirley Lions at a time of crisis and working with Age UK Solihull supporting some of the most vulnerable in the community to reduce loneliness by delivering afternoon teas, festive boxes and birthday cakes to celebrate big birthdays.

Please join us all at Fountains in wishing Lorraine the best of luck in the national finals.

Pottery painting

Fountains residents and staff were delighted to welcome Sue Cox for a lovely craftwork session of Pottery Painting.

Sue guided everyone through the process of decorating their flower pots with creative and colourful designs. We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon creating our own unique artworks and the results were beautiful!

Thank you, Sue for a wonderful afternoon. We are looking forward to our next session already!

Chatty bench launches

Fountains were delighted to be invited to the launch of the “Chatty Bench Project” which is a Citizens Advice Solihull Borough CAB initiative.

Armed with home made chocolate orange cupcakes and goody bags Fountains headed down to the designated chatty bench at Shirley Community Centre to have a chat and eat cake.

Every Thursday between 11am-1pm you will find a volunteer from CAB on the bench, ready and waiting to chat to members of the community that would welcome some company and conversation.

Reducing loneliness and supporting those members of the community venturing out following the pandemic is so important which is why this project gets the thumbs up from us at Fountains care home.

It was a lovely afternoon “chatting” and meeting new people. A real pleasure to chat and meet Councillor Karen Grinsell - Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health - who has also been appointed Deputy Leader by Councillor Courts, who came along to show her support.

Lorraine Shannon -Home Services Advisor- for Fountains care home is looking forward to supporting the volunteers and being a chatty bencher when needed.
