Activities at Hickathrift House Care Home

We have two Activities Coordinators here at Hickathrift House. We have a wide range of activities within the home, including musical entertainment, arts & crafts, clubs for like-minded people, such as flower arranging and gardening, board games, baking (where the best bit is the eating afterwards!), and we celebrate special events throughout the year. We also have trips out on a regular basis using our own minibus, where we find out places of interest each person would like to visit.

It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these activities as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join in with activities and events as often as they can.

For the less mobile residents, we unique one-to-one session, such as simple chats over a cup of tea, reading or listening to music. Activities are some of the most important aspects of a care home, so it is essential that our team are dedicated to ensuring that residents are entertained, and that life at Hickathrift House is fun and active.

Kat Colangelo

Activities Lead

Hello, my name is Kat and I am the Activities Lead here at Hickathrift House.

Since 2017 I have been working in the field of well-being and I am passionate and enthusiastic about enriching all our of residents' quality of life.

As the Activities Lead at Hickathrift House, my focus is learning about each of our resident's likes and dislikes and supporting them to remain receptive and active in addition to supporting them to engage with our local community friends.

I organise activities to stimulate the mind, body and soul in an enjoyable, comfortable way. My aim is to diversify and increase activities ensuring that there is something for everyone - from Wine and Cheese events, excursions on our home Mini Bus as well as individual bespoke person-centered activities.

Valentine's Day

We celebrated this day of love with crafts, sharing wedding day photos and a party celebrating all types of love, self-love, friend love and romantic love. Residents loved reminiscing, dancing and singing along to the incredible singing by musical entertainers. As well as being a little silly and trying on the themed dress-up accessories.

Community Big Breakfast Charity Morning

We welcomed the community, residents, their loved ones and staff to our Big Breakfast Morning in order to raise money for the Stroke Association. Staff at Hickathrift House went the extra mile by showing off their favourite PJ’s. Locals from the community who attended chatted with residents and shared stories of their favourite meals, life stories and local history. It was a fabulous morning getting to know everyone over a scrumptious meal, as well as, raising £79 for the Stroke Association.

Residents knit for local maternity hospital

The talented knitters at Hickathrift House care home, in Marshland St James, Wisbech have come to the aid of King’s Lynn Hospital who issued a plea that their maternity department was looking for donations of knitted hats for their newborn babies.

Residents at Hickathrift House care home sprang into action and helped meet the call by creating an incredible 67 hats and several cardigans for the newborn babies too. They’ve been knitting stretchy hats for the past month and on January 24th delivered them all to the hospital. They were met by three midwifery community team leaders, the Central Delivery Suite Housekeeper, Ward Clerk and a Professional Midwifery Advocate Midwife, who were all over the moon with their donations. The group from King’s Lynn Hospital Maternity department spent time chatting to the residents over a cup of tea and looking at all the wonderful brightly-coloured hats and cardis.

Australia Day

G'day mate! It was a bonza of a day at Hickathrift House celebrating Australia Day together. We of course tried on the fabulous hats, learned about the First Fleet, took a virtual tour of the best that Australia has to offer and played boomerang with each other. We finished the day off by trying to guess what the various slang terms meant and watched the film, Australia.
Jan said, "What an interesting country. There's so much to see and do".

Elvis' Birthday

Craft club at Hickathrift House paid homage to the King of Rock n Roll by designing these spectacular records. While we were getting crafty, we enjoyed listening to his music and reminisced about his movies. In the afternoon we took part in an Elvis-themed quiz and as a team scored 8 out of 10. We definitely have some hound dog fans at Hickathift House.

New Year, New Wardrobe!

Residents requested our first outing of 2023 to be a trip to the January sales. So we headed to Kings Lynn to visit the various clothing, gift and card shops that took everyone's fancy.

Residents not only picked up a bargain or two but loved a spot of retail therapy with friends. We laughed over various gifts, found the perfect coat and helped each other find the items they were after. Trips like this help to maintain independence, build friendships and support sensory needs.
