Activities at Highview House Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Aiden Wylie

Lead Activities Coordinator

Hello, my name is Aiden Wylie, and I am Head Activities Coordinator here at Highview House.  My job is to ensure a mentally and physically challenging and varied calendar of activities.  I want to involve all our residents in a warm and welcoming environment.

My career has been in education and I have lived in countries as diverse as Japan and Iraq, but in 2022 I came to Highview with the ambition of offering a range of activities, trips and entertainment which lead to lasting memories and experiences.

Life at Highview House Care Home

Arts Club at Highview House

Arts and crafts are a important part of many of our residents’ lives.   For some, it is a continuation of a lifelong hobby.  For others, it is a chance to learn a new skill.   We have a number of clubs at Highview, including baking, keep-fit and art.   Here you can see resident June enjoying some drawing.   No matter what your interests are, there is always something to do at Highview House.

Bee Talk at Highview

Highview residents were delighted to meet Ged Russell, Head Beekeeper, who gave us a demonstration of hiving.  Residents were able to see how bees live, watch the early stages in the formation of honey.    Ged’s fascinating visit was part of our ongoing series of community engagement events which see local community groups and individuals visit the home to include residents in their work.

Big Quiz of the Year

All over the country our care homes and hospitals linked up for Barchester’s Big Quiz of the year!

Residents tested their knowledge with a variety of questions, from historical humdingers and musical musings to pictorial puzzlers and connective conundrums.

Everyone who participated had a fantastic time and enjoyed some friendly competition.

Christmas Pantomime

Highview House residents were delighted to welcome back the fabulous Theatre Presto, who were performing Cinderella.  The show was a hilarious adventure, full of music, resident interaction and laughter.   Afterwards, the cast were generous enough to spend time mingling, leaving residents, family and staff with huge grins for the rest of the day. The panto was a great chance for friends and family to join their loved ones in the home, and for staff across the home to participate in a whole-home activity. Our photos show residents and cast after the show, and you can tell how much everybody enjoyed themselves. Our residents would like to thank Preston, Lou and Aidan for a wonderful panto experience, and wish them well for their travels over the festive period. We all look forward to their return next summer.

Meet the Reindeers

Across our homes we got into the Christmas spirit of things by joining a festive live virtual experience, led by Des and Kelly from Performing Pets.

Our residents were thrilled to meet the charming furry friends and get up close and personal with the reindeers.

We certainly learnt some interesting facts about the animals and had a fantastic time.

Duncan Chisholm and Hamish Napier perform

Highview House in Inverness was honoured to play host to internationally-renowned musicians Duncan Chisholm and Hamish Napier on Tuesday, 5th of December.   Duncan, who has performed with bands such as Wolfstone and Runrig, and multi-instrumentalist Hamish, played a set of evocative and memorable songs which captured life in the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

For Duncan’s parents, Aldra and Archie who are both residents at Highview, it was a particularly proud moment as they were able to see their son – who usually plays sell-out tours in front of hundreds of people -   perform for the residents, friends and family at their home.
