Kingsland House have a variety of activities that our residents help us choose. Celebrating Life in our home is jovial and fun and from our weekly delivered activity sheet, our residents can chose exactly what they want to join in with.

Our activities range from exercise classes, gardening, arts and crafts, games to food-fun clubs. We also offer our in house church services, our own home cinema, our mobile pub - The Kingsland Tavern, visiting Pat Dogs, musical entertainers, minibus outings, theme days and birthday celebrations. For those residents being nursed in their rooms we have one to one activities sessions.

At Kingsland House we believe that activities are hugely important to stimulate and uplift, and getting to know our residents interests and lifestyle choices assist our activities team in creating events and activities to suit their expressed wishes and capabilities. We also encourage our residents' families and friends to join in with as much as they can to make Kingsland House a loving family atmosphere.

Activities coordinator and Dementia Champion

I've been at Kingsland House as the Activities Coordinator and Dementia Champion since April 2024 having previously worked in a similar role since 2020.

This is my most rewarding role to date and I am passionate about working with the elderly.

I love the variety of each day, getting to know and share in the lives of our residents. The commitment and support of Barchester enables us to deliver activities and outings that go above and beyond to support and celebrate life which makes the difference to our residents wellbeing and happiness.

Anchors Away!

With the magnificent replica of Christopher Columbus’s flagship, Nao Santa María visiting Shoreham for just 12 days, we were determined that as many residents as possible had the opportunity to see this incredible ship.

That’s why we’ve enjoyed not one, not two, but three trips to Shoreham Harbour over the past week!

Each outing has been filled with special moments, whether relaxing at Port Kitchen with a cuppa, cooling down with a delicious ice cream, or strolling down to the lock gates to watch the yachts and fishing boats pass through. And, of course, every visit included plenty of time admiring the spectacular Nao Santa María in the dry dock.

For one resident with a lifelong passion for boats and ships, it was the perfect afternoon, while others shared memories of family and friends who have sailed and enjoyed reminiscing together as we watched the harbour come to life.

Gardening Club

Residents got creative in the garden to make the most of the glorious weather. Some helped with planting and watering, while others simply relaxed and enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and the colourful flowers we’ve been nurturing together.

Pet Pals Therapy

We were delighted to welcome the ever-popular Pet Pals Therapy for a truly special visit!

Becks brought along the sweetest little lambs, the cutest tiny chicks, and her lovely therapy pup in training. Everyone enjoyed watching them, getting up close for some gentle cuddles, and a few lucky residents even had the chance to bottle feed the lambs

A wonderful afternoon filled with smiles, laughter, and lots of unforgettable moments.

Easter At Kingsland

Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter from all of us at Kingsland House. We’ve had a lovely weekend, with visits from the Easter Bunny and Chicken, a fun Easter egg hunt, Easter Sunday songs of praise, a delicious roast dinner, and of course, eggs for everyone!

A Bit Of DIY In The Garden

Our beautiful gardens at Kingsland House are bursting with daffodils! Residents love watching the wildlife that visits each day. With bird feeders on many of the windows, there’s always something to see — from colourful garden birds to the cheeky antics of our resident squirrels. We’re even lucky enough to spot our local foxes enjoying a sunny snooze in the garden!

This week our wonderful maintenance team spent time gardening with residents and helping them put up new nesting boxes around the grounds, ready for the busy spring season.

With warmer days on the way, we’re all looking forward to spending much more time outdoors together, enjoying the fresh air, gardening, flowers and wildlife that make our gardens so special.

Bees And How They Produce Honey

Residents enjoyed a fascinating talk and demonstration all about bees, honey, the excellent work their team does in Adur and Worthing, and the vital role pollinators play in our environment. Residents loved seeing real honeycomb up close and learning how bees build their incredible hives — plus tasting delicious local honey!

Trip To Brighton Sealife Centre

What better way to celebrate World Ocean Day than with a minibus trip to the Brighton Sea Life Centre, the oldest operating aquarium in the world?

Our visit became even more special when one of the residents shared that he had actually met his wife there many decades ago, when the venue hosted dances accompanied by a jazz band. It was a wonderful opportunity to reminisce and hear some very happy memories.

Everyone loved exploring the incredible marine life and admiring the beautiful Victorian building itself. Brighton Sea Life Centre first opened in 1872, making it more than 150 years old!

Residents also enjoyed the drive along the seafront, and as we stepped out onto the beach after our visit, we were delighted to find that the skies had cleared and the sun had come out to greet us over the pier.

Visit From Shoreham Firefighters

Everyone enjoyed a special visit from our local firefighters. Residents and the firefighters came together over tea and cake, whilst sharing some lovely life stories followed by a look around their fire engine.

Garden Centre Trip

Another of our popular garden-centre outings, this time to South Downs Nurseries.

Residents enjoyed a gentle country drive, a relaxed wander around the beautiful garden centre, and then rounded things off with tasty hot drinks and sweet treats in the café. A lovely trip out for everyone!

Meet Zeus

Zeus is our newest PAT dog, and he certainly made an impression. Zeus is a beautiful 3-year-old German Shepherd who came along with volunteer Mike to spend time with residents and they were absolutely thrilled to meet him! He even thought he would join in with the quiz we were playing on the Rainbow table!

We are so privileged to have Pets as Therapy Dogs and their amazing owners who bring them to visit - their calming presence, gentle affection, and friendly interactions bring a special kind of comfort: help reduce anxiety, encourage communication, and often spark wonderful memories. It’s incredible to see how a wagging tail and a gentle nudge bring smiles and joy.

Special Trip To The Aviation Museum

Residents enjoyed the first of several outings planned to offer something a little special for some of our gentlemen, with a visit to the Wings Aviation Museum in Balcombe.

What an incredible museum, full of recovered aircraft, real human stories, and genuine artefacts and equipment from WW2 and beyond.

For one gentleman in particular, who had an amazing career as an aeronautical engineer, this was an especially meaningful treat. He made the afternoon even more special for all of us, sharing his knowledge and pointing out the fascinating details and stories behind some of the incredible flying machines.

It was a wonderful afternoon for everyone, with plenty of chatter and laughter on the minibus both on the way there and on the journey home. A lovely day filled with memories, sharing stories, and lots of smiles.

Resident, Rodders Talks About His Life long Passion

We spent a wonderful afternoon with our resident, Rodders, learning all about his incredible collection of rocks, fossils and geological treasures, as well as hearing the fascinating stories behind his lifelong passion for discovering and preserving these amazing relics.

Residents and staff were completely spellbound as Rodders shared his knowledge and experiences, from ancient fossils and beautiful quartz specimens to coral, dinosaur footprints, woolly mammoth hair and many other remarkable finds.

We also loved hearing how he turned his passion into a successful business, built on years of exploration, dedication and curiosity.

At our home, we love celebrating the unique lives, talents and achievements of our residents, and this was a truly special opportunity to learn from someone with such a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm.

Thank you, Rodders, for inspiring us all and sharing your extraordinary collection and stories with us. Every resident has a story to tell, and today we were privileged to hear one of the most fascinating.

Tour Of The Brighton Amex Stadium

Some of the gentleman had a lovely morning at the Amex stadium. They were met by the staff and some ex football players who gave them a tour of the grounds and a look behind the scenes.

Music And Dance

Residents enjoyed live performance. Leila sang a repertoire of songs, whilst residents sang along and danced the afternoon away. After Leila's performance in the main lounge, she spent time with residents in their rooms and sang songs at their request.

Skittles

Nick’s Skittles afternoon is always a big hit with residents.

The game has been adapted so that everyone can take part, whether that is sitting or standing. You will always see lots of smiles, plenty of laughs and cheers.
