Activities at Laurel Bank Care Home

Activities are a fundamental part of a rich and varied lifestyle here at Laurel Bank Care Home, which is why we organise both physically and mentally stimulating social events for those we support. The weekly itinerary is ever-changing, and regularly includes art lessons, chair-based exercise, trips and visits from a variety of different animals, as well as one-to-one time for residents who prefer the peace and quiet. Our team actively tries to incorporate the hobbies and interests that are meaningful to residents into the activities schedule as encouragement to continue with much-loved pastimes.

Jaimy Lee Almond

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Jaimy Lee, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Laurel Bank.

I have worked in the care home industry for over nine years. I started working at Laurel Bank in 2018 as a carer, and then, I was promoted to senior carer which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I moved over to activities in 2020, as I was asked to help out and help encourage residents to join in. During this, I realised how much fun it could be and chose to stay on and got promoted to Activities Coordinator.

I love my role as every day is different and I try to make sure the residents are happy and engage in meaningful activities, this also helps support the transition for new residents.

Life at Laurel Bank Care Home

Century celebrations for resident

Celebrations have been in full swing at Laurel Bank as one of its residents reached her centenary in style.

Sybil Hansen was joined by staff, friends and other residents as she received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of her landmark birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef Grant.

Sybil was born near London before moving to Lancaster after the war with her husband Michael, an economics teacher and Deputy Head at Lancaster Royal Grammar School. Sybil has had a lifelong passion for music and she helped to organise a classical music appreciation society at Lancaster University that was well loved by many. Sybil and Michael settled in Lancaster and had a wide group of friends here, before moving in to Laurel Bank together a few years ago.

The birthday girl said: “I don’t feel a day over 80! I don’t know what the secret is, it may be good food, a good wine and of course - good company!”

A Perfect Tribute

Jaimy-Lee, Activities Coordinator has skilfully crafted a homemade Remembrance display of two Soldiers with the help of her partner at Alexandra Barracks in Lancaster.    The memorial is now positioned at the entrance to Laurel Bank care home where everyone can see the moving military silhouettes and pay their respects, Lest We Forget

A live cooking demonstration with Chef

We had a lovely time joining Chef Alex Connell from Vegetarian for Life for a Halloween-inspired virtual cooking demo.  Alex demonstrated how to prepare a few themed dishes, such as root vegetable tagine, roasted butternut squash mac-n-cheese, chocolate pots with piped biscuits and flapjacks. Our residents were delighted to be a part of this lovely virtual culinary session by tasting the vegetarian dishes from the comfort of our home

Laurel Island Discs

Singer Rachel Hayes delivered a brilliant performance by presenting a "Laurel Bank Discs" because we all love Desert Island Discs!

Residents put together a playlist for her of their favourite songs and she sang them all. We istened to a wide range of genres including Irish music, Abba & German music!

Yarnspiration

We took some time out over refreshments to learn some new knitting skills, the class was delivered by a resident, who has enjoyed knitting all her life, to Jaimy-Lee, Activities Coordinator and to other interested residents.

We all have different ways that we spend quiet time. For some it's sitting in a lotus position, for others it's coloring, and for a few of us - it's knitting!

Creative writing

We had a great time joining journalist and novelist, Mike Gayle, for an intriguing virtual interview, during which he shared top tips for creative writing with our residents and read passages from his latest book, All the Lonely People.

We were thrilled to find out about Mike’s background, to understand what led him to become a writer and his creative process.

It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all, especially by our keen writers at the home.
