Activities at Laurel Bank Care Home

Activities are a fundamental part of a rich and varied lifestyle here at Laurel Bank Care Home, which is why we organise both physically and mentally stimulating social events for those we support. The weekly itinerary is ever-changing, and regularly includes art lessons, chair-based exercise, trips and visits from a variety of different animals, as well as one-to-one time for residents who prefer the peace and quiet. Our team actively tries to incorporate the hobbies and interests that are meaningful to residents into the activities schedule as encouragement to continue with much-loved pastimes.

Jaimy Lee Almond

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Jaimy Lee, and I am the Activities Coordinator here at Laurel Bank.

I have worked in the care home industry for over nine years. I started working at Laurel Bank in 2018 as a carer, and then, I was promoted to senior carer which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I moved over to activities in 2020, as I was asked to help out and help encourage residents to join in. During this, I realised how much fun it could be and chose to stay on and got promoted to Activities Coordinator.

I love my role as every day is different and I try to make sure the residents are happy and engage in meaningful activities, this also helps support the transition for new residents.

Activities and Events Partnerships

As part of our bespoke life-enrichment programmes, we host a number of live virtual events in the home on a regular basis through a number of partnerships with places of interest and world class performance companies

Life at Laurel Bank Care Home

Dartmoor Zoo

We were able to virtually dive into the impressive wildlife of Dartmoor Zoo today!

We explored its grounds and learnt about the unique history of the park from the zoo’s educational team. The culmination of the tour was the live tiger training demonstration, which was wonderful to see and enjoyed by all.

Residents were delighted to see amazing photos and short videos of tigers, zebras, meerkats and tapirs

World Chocolate Day !

On World Chocolate day, Residents and staff were treated to guess the chocolate and asked to engage in a very chocolatey quiz! Residents also learnt the history of chocolate and Britain's part in making the first chocolate bar.

National chocolate day is possibly our favourite day in the home.  No prizes for guessing what the the prizes were for the winners today !!

Virtual trip to Iceland

We took a wonderful virtual trip to Iceland’s Puffin Rescue Centre at the Beluga Whale Sanctuary.

We were able to virtually meet some of the rescued Atlantic Puffins and to learn interesting facts about their care and unique lives. We took a peek into their lives in the wild, the Puffling rescue program in the Westman Islands, and how SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary’s team takes care of these charismatic little birds each day.

It was a very exciting experience, enjoyed by all.

WW2 virtual talk with Blenheim Palace

Ahead of Armed Forces Day, we were transported back in time for a World War II themed talk and tour of Blenheim Palace, hosted by Antonia Keaney, the Palace’s social historian and author.

Entitled ‘Evacuees and Espionage,’ Antonia’s wartime themed talk focused on how the Marlborough family, estate staff and the Palace itself played a full and energetic part in the war effort.

The talk and tour told the story of how the Palace prepared for the worst, survived the onslaught of 400 boys being evacuated to Blenheim and kept the secrets of MI5.

It was a lovely experience, enjoyed by all.

Cheese tasting from around the world

Residents at Laurel Bank in Lancaster enjoyed a trip round the culinary world as they tasted a wide range of tasty cheese and sipped on a glass of their favourite tipple as part of the homes popular cheese and wine tasting events.

The homes hospitality team prepared a top class and wide-ranging selection of the world’s cheeses for Residents to try which had the taste buds tingling!

Residents gathered in the homes dining area, on some lovely decorated tables and started the session. Residents got involved, trying the many different types of cheese  on offer, with some commenting that they hadn’t tasted cheese such as stilton or brie for a while and the loved to reminisce about it.
