Activities at Mulberry Court Care Home
The team at Mulberry Court works hard to support and encourage residents to participate in both group and individual activities, based around their preferences and lifestyle choices. We take time to get to know each person, sitting with them and listening to them speak about their lives, interests, and aspirations. We have access to our own minibus so outings to nearby places of interest are available; for example local museums, art galleries, garden centres, and public houses. We also host themed evenings, such as 'Quiz and Meal-in-a-Basket', 'The Races (Greyhounds, Horses)', and 'Takeaway and Movie Night' that we also encourage relatives to come to. We believe lifestyle choices and activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home, and it is essential that we help residents to have fulfilling and enjoyable lives.
Zoe Giles
Hi my name is Zoe I am the lead activities co-ordinator here at Mulberry Court, I started in January 2024 having previously worked at another care home on reception, however I started doing more and more activities with the resident’s there so when I got the chance to move across to a Barchester home and do the role of lead I took the opportunity.
I have always enjoyed organising and am usually the one in the family who brings everyone together and sorts things so I feel I have found my true calling!
I am so lucky to be able to say I love my job, no two days are ever the same, although every day is so rewarding and to know I have made a difference to someone is the greatest feeling whether that’s through a group activity or an individual room visit to even stopping and saying a few words to them.

Life at Mulberry Court Care Home
International Friendship Day
Mulberry Court had a blast celebrating Friendship Day on July 30. There were smiles all round as staff and residents reminisced about their friends and some of the wonderful times they had shared over the years.
The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between people, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.
Today, Friendship Day is celebrated in many countries across the globe and is a special occasion that encourages people to celebrate their friendships – old and new – by spending time with their friends and loved ones.
Staff and residents spent time reminiscing about friendships old and new. Taking time to listen to each others stories of friendships from childhood to the ones they share now in the home.
Afternoon Tea Dance
Residents stepped back in time for an old traditional tea dance this week. With the best china tea sets out and cake stands with delicate mini cakes and fancies the scene was set for a good old sing along. Residents had the chance to request a song that was special to them sparking off some lovely stories reminiscing about times gone by. A lovely afternoon thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
World Chocolate Day
Staff and residents at Barchester’s Mulberry Court care home in York had a fantastic time celebrating World Chocolate Day on July 7, surely one of the best days of the year!
Overseen by head chef Tim Wilson, staff and residents whipped up a selection of different chocolate treats from chocolate logs to cupcakes, chocolate fudge cake and even a chocolate fountain. Once they had cooled, everyone got busy decorating with strawberries and raspberries to make some of the most fabulous chocolate creations in town.
General Manager, Fiona Christie, said: “It wasn’t just the residents that were excited when we found out there was a World Chocolate Day, the eyes of all our staff lit up too. We all had great fun discussing our favourite types of chocolate down the years, it’s amazing how many different chocolate bars and flavours there have been!”
Olympic excitement at Mulberry
Here at Mulberry Court we are excited to watch and follow this year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
To show our support for all the nations that participate and the Team GB, we decorated our home with special flags, banners and torches.
We’ve organised a series of activities, games, quizzes and themed events for our residents to enjoy during the games.
Watercolour painting
Residents turned their hand this week to Watercolour painting and what lovely results! Our very own Pablo Picasso’s with a choice of different objects to paint; from a complex display of flowers to more simple ornaments there was something for everyone regardless of talent. The ‘Give it a go!’ attitude worked well as confidence grew and some beautiful masterpieces were created.
History of Robots with the V&A
We enjoyed a wonderful virtual introduction to the world of robots with V&A Dundee Curator, Kirsty Hassard.
Kirsty talked us through the history of robots and their early beginnings, the presentation traced the fascination of all things wired and wonderful and considered what the future might hold for our relationship with a multitude of mechanical machines.
It was absolutely thrilling to learn what robots can do now and what they might be able to do in the future.
