Activities at Mulberry Court Care Home

The team at Mulberry Court works hard to support and encourage residents to participate in both group and individual activities, based around their preferences and lifestyle choices. We take time to get to know each person, sitting with them and listening to them speak about their lives, interests, and aspirations. We have access to our own minibus so outings to nearby places of interest are available; for example local museums, art galleries, garden centres, and public houses. We also host themed evenings, such as 'Quiz and Meal-in-a-Basket', 'The Races (Greyhounds, Horses)', and 'Takeaway and Movie Night' that we also encourage relatives to come to. We believe lifestyle choices and activities are one of the most important aspects of a care home, and it is essential that we help residents to have fulfilling and enjoyable lives.

Zoe Giles

Lead Activities Co-ordinator

Hi my name is Zoe I am the lead activities co-ordinator here at Mulberry Court, I started in January 2024 having previously worked at another care home on reception, however I  started doing more and more activities with the resident’s there so when I got the chance to move across to a Barchester home and do the role of lead I took the opportunity.

I have always enjoyed organising and am usually the one in the family who brings everyone together and sorts things so I feel I have found my true calling!

I am so lucky to be able to say I love my job, no two days are ever the same, although every day is so rewarding and to know I have made a difference to someone is the greatest feeling whether that’s through a group activity or an individual room visit to even stopping and saying a few words to them.

Resident Ambassadors of the Year

Residents, Roy and Ellen at Mulberry Court in York have been crowned Resident Ambassadors of the Year for the North NE Division in the Barchester Care Awards 2024 and are through to the national round of judging.

The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 13,000 residents living in Barchester’s 261 care homes and private hospitals across the country. Categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Carer of the Year’ to ‘Dementia Care Champion’ and ‘Activities Coordinator of the Year’.

Book Club heads into the garden

With a little help from Pam from the ‘Blue House Bookshop’ we have been busy sorting through our many donated books so that we can start our very own mobile library and fill some our bookshelves with fresh books.  Our Book Club is a popular group activity bringing everyone together to discuss their favourite genres whilst choosing books which everyone can enjoy.

With the glorious weather upon us we headed outside with our books to enjoy our garden.

A wish comes true!

It was a huge honour and privilege to be able to take one of our lovely resident’s Rachael to her sister’s wedding after overcoming lots of hurdles and set back’s we were finally able to make her sister’s wish come true.

We took Rachael and her husband to St. Winifred’s Church in York in the shadow of the impressive Minster.

I have never seen such response from Rachael before as she engaged with members of her family some who had travelled from Australia specially.  After the beautiful ceremony the happy couple were lead to their reception by the “New York brass band.

Cook Off 2024

Staff and residents are celebrating because their wonderful Managing Director, Fiona Fagan, from Barchester’s North East and Scotland Division, has stepped completely out of her comfort zone to compete in the Barchester Charitable Foundation Cook Off 2024.

Fiona went head-to-head with the Managing Directors from Barchester’s four other divisions and cooked up a storm to raise a phenomenal £24,595 for Barchester’s Charitable Foundation which helps connect vulnerable people and those living with a disability to community groups in their local area by providing grants to improve mobility and quality of life.  Each year the Foundation distributes thousands of pounds to individuals, small community groups and charities across England, Scotland and Wales.

Pebble painting

We didn’t let the rain dampen our spirits and because the weather wasn’t great, we thought we do some arts and crafts and paint pebbles….

It’s harder than it looks but the residents had a good attempt at it and we absolutely love them, there was a splash of colour everywhere!

Wimbledon special

Today at Mulberry Court York we held a Wimbledon special – residents played a game of tennis against each other over our newly purchased net.

Afterwards we all enjoyed a tasty treat of strawberries and cream and a nice cup of tea.  We also had a special guest appearance by “Sue Barker”.

So much fun and laughter was a fantastic atmosphere!
