Activities at Peony Court Care Home

Our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to enhancing residents' quality of life by providing regular social and psychological stimulation. The activities can be undertaken in groups or ‘one-to-one’ and are based on individual preferences. We have a varied programme, with the goal of appealing to the interests and capabilities of all residents as best as possible. For example, there's pottery, baking, Scrabble, art classes, exercise sessions and much more. The Activities Coordinators also organise visits from entertainers, local groups, including school choirs, religious services and outings on the minibus.

Activities

Hi! I'm Paul, the Activities Co-Ordinator at Peony Court.

Before I joined the care sector I worked for many years in the hotel industry, managing housekeeping, hospitality and customer experience. Several members of my family have a history of working in care and I thought, maybe that could be me as well. I'm a natural entertainer with a flare for bringing smiles to people's faces and this was absolutely the right move for me.

Here at Peony Court, I make a point of getting to know each and every resident and their families. I tailor the activities program to suit individuals, no one is the same and everyone has different interests. It's my aim to be empathetic, enthusiastic and engaging with all of my residents. We have incredible activities and events here guided by exactly what our residents want, from pampering sessions to singing and dancing, chair exercises to arts and crafts, and diversity is absolutely the key!

I can't wait to welcome more residents and guests to Peony Court!

Accessible Art

This week we headed over to Dulwich Picture Gallery for a guided tour of the gallery. This was a friendly Creative Conversation session inviting guests to take notice, be curious and discuss! Guided by one of the gallery guides guests were invited to take a closer look at paintings from their main Collection and the 'Soulscapes' exhibition as well as the opportunity to share opinions, stories and impressions.

Making Friends

We were out and about this week at a local event with other local businesses and community groups to make some friends and tell folks all about Peony Court.  It was a great opportunity to make some new friends and we handed out free home made biscuits as well!

PS. The cat was for a scavenger hunt held on the day with visiting children.

Out and About

One of our resident's favourite thing to do is head out to the garden centre, not only to pick beautiful flowers and plants for our home, but it just so happens the garden centre does great coffee as well!

We are fortunate that we have a mini bus so residents can choose where they want to go and when.... and almost nothing is off limits!

A multi-generational Biodiversity Project

Peony Court joined forces with ECCO, Tunstall Nursery and ‘This is Croydon’ for this fabulous project funded by The Lottery Heritage. Resident's started their day joined by little ones from the nursery and together they planted new colourful annuals in flower beds local to the home. This session was concluded with the unveiling of a special plaque by Councillor Humayun Kabir in memory of local legend Joan Pick - you can read more about her here:  https://www.culturecroydon.com/event/celebrating-joan-picks-legacy/

There’s more! The children then came in to Peony Court and joined some of our residents for an Art session, with the theme "what we love" - looking at what we all want to see in the future, from more green spaces to cleaner oceans and less plastic as well as the more unusual things courtesy of the wonderfully creative imaginations of the children!! We then ended our day with a lovely spread of Tea, cake and sandwiches. It was a great opportunity to bring together the very young and the young at heart with a single goal - looking at the next generation and their future.

93 and I beat Cancer!!

In the summer of 2023, 93 year old resident Joyce a retired teacher heard the words we all dread, “you’ve got cancer”. Joyce was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer the same type of cancer that sadly ended the life of her late husband; so when Joyce, her friends and family heard the news you can imagine how devastated everyone was.  Joyce was naturally worried she said “I was incredibly frightened, I’m in my 90’s, what if the doctors say I’m too old for treatment, how do you make this kind of decision?”

Almost a year later following months of gruelling chemotherapy everyone was on tenterhooks, waiting for Joyce to come back from the hospital with news following her latest scans, when we say there were tears, there really were, floods! It was the news we were all hoping for, “you’re in remission!!”

Joyce said, “It is such an amazing feeling to know that such a loving group of people care so much about me and were by my side, it’s easy to write off an ‘old person’ and it felt like I was handed a death sentence, I want everyone to know, especially older people, cancer doesn’t mean you’re condemned, if you can find the strength, fight it every step of the way. I did!! And I’m so grateful that my friends, family and the whole team at Peony Court were by my side every step of the way!
