Activities at South Chowdene Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Niki Powell

Activities Coordinator

I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.

Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home

World Animal Day

We always love animal visits, and this was no exception. What arrived was a huge surprise as Paul hadn’t told us what he was bringing in. As a gecko, snake, centipede (the largest on earth I think) and a tortoise came out of the boxes, there were some interesting expressions on many faces but all residents present did get closer than they thought they might and we all very much enjoyed the afternoon.

History of Botanical garden

Our homes enjoyed a wonderful virtual tour of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh with Community Engagement Manager, Charlotte Walker, and Botanic Cottage Operations Co-ordinator, Laura Gallagher.

The residents were thrilled to learn more about the history of the beautiful Garden, which is now a home to an impressive plant collection from around the world.

Charlotte and Laura also gave a demonstration of making fresh herbal tea and were happy to answer our questions.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all who joined.

Wallace Collection

Our homes had a fantastic time joining members of the Wallace Collection for an amazing sensory session.

During the live virtual experience, our residents explored one of the museum’s most beautiful Dutch flower paintings and learnt new drawing techniques.

We cannot wait to put our creative skills to a test and produce beautiful paintings of our own.

Everyone enjoyed the lovely talk, we all had lots of fun and it’s given us plenty of ideas.

Summer Fair

Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at South Chowdene Care Home to enjoy an Autumn Fete that was held in the home’s grounds on Sunday 4th September.

South Chowdene Care Home hosted a variety of activities throughout the day, including Raffle, tombola, craft and gift stalls as well as live entertainment from Dave Brewis, which were enjoyed by everyone who came to the event.

Friendship Day

Residents sent cards to mark Friendship day to long time friends showing their appreciation of the ongoing friendship. We then held an Afternoon Tea for these friends where everyone got together and shared stories, different ways they met and toasted the events they have seen each other through.

A month of friendship

August has been a busy month for finding out about different animals, their habitats and lifestyles and the challenges they face currently. We were lucky to be able to see some up close and have a hold. Others weren’t quite as easy so we found out about them and made our own versions which were much safer. Residents were amazed at some of the Lion facts and footage. On Elephant day, we made our own herd instead of having one in.
