Activities at South Chowdene Care Home
Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!
Niki Powell
I arrange meaningful activities for all of our residents based on their likes and interests. I love sharing fun times with our residents, their families and with staff. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with residents about their hobbies/interests as well as reminiscing in small groups.
Our activities extend beyond the home with trips to places of interest, places residents have enjoyed throughout their lives eg. Seaside, parks, garden centers, as well as craft/ art workshops at libraries and general interest talks around the area.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Life at South Chowdene Care Home
V&A Dundee virtual exhibition
We had a lovely time joining Becca Clark and James Wylie – members of V&A Dundee’s exhibitions team – as they took us on a virtual tour of the museum’s incredible Scottish Design Galleries.
We were introduced to the wide range of unique objects at the galleries from architecture and engineering, jewellery and textiles to theatre and their fascinating stories.
And we were able to learn more about the importance of all objects in telling the rich and varied history of Scottish design.
It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all.
Yorkshire Day
Ahhhh! The good old Yorkshire pudding was a highlight of our homage to Yorkshire. Many a trip to the various parts of this vast county were the subject of conversation over some Yorkshire cheese tasting with some very funny tales of trips to the Yorkshire coast.
Residents take virtual trip to Iceland
We took a wonderful virtual trip to Iceland and visited the SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary to have an inside look into the daily care of their two resident beluga whales: Little White and Little Grey.
Our residents were introduced to the history of the Beluga Whale Sanctuary and learnt more about its mission to provide a more natural home for belugas in human care with a first-hand look at how the dedicated team are not only caring for the whales, but preparing for their future in the sea sanctuary!
It was an enjoyable event for everyone, learning more about the amazing beluga whales and how they are cared for at the sanctuary.
Window painting
We have been very lucky to have the chance to work with Sara Qaed through ‘Art Diamonds’. Sara showed us how to make some very simple designs on a window look fantastic. All participants felt very inspired and started drawing their own designs and designs for future special days and events are under discussion.
Celebrating Olympic glories
During the Olympic weeks, residents had the chance to look into sports they didn’t know much about and to reminisce around the sports men and women of their era. We had a look at longstanding records and willed our athletes to break records and be the best they could be. We put a medal on the ‘seasons’ tree for each one won with the name of the athlete or team on the back of the medal to represent our nation’s success in Japan.
Snap happy as we celebrate World Photography Day
To celebrate World Photography Day, we were delighted to hear from Professional Photographer, Damian Bailey who spent some time guiding us through different photography tips and techniques.
We all had a wonderful afternoon and are excited to be taking part in the #BaileyBarchester competition where we look forward to putting all the tips and ideas learnt during the talk into practice.
Thank you, Damian Bailey Photography.
