Activities at South Grange Care Home
Our specialist activities staff are committed to organising a mix of activities and events for residents and the local community to get involved in, including trips out to local places of interest in our minibus and visits from entertainers and musicians. It is important to us that each individual who we support can get as much from these as possible, so we try our best to arrange activities that reflect their interests and capabilities as best as possible, and encourage them to participate in any way they can. We also encourage relatives to join with activities and events as often as they can.

Celebrating life at South Grange Care Home
Easter celebrations
Residents at South Grange nursing home were delighted to welcome the Easter Bunny on Easter Sunday, bringing smiles and a wonderful festive atmosphere to the day. The special visit included thoughtful gifts for everyone, with some residents enjoying a handmade Easter bunny with a chocolate centre, whilst others received engaging Easter-themed activity packs filled with puzzles and crafts.
The celebrations continued with a fun-filled Easter bonnet making competition, where residents designed and decorated their own hats with colourful ribbons, flowers and seasonal designs. Chatter and creativity filled the room as everyone proudly showed off their unique bonnets. After showing off their designs, residents voted for their favourite bonnet and the winner was presented with a large Easter egg as their prize. It was a fun and heart-warming day, full of celebration, companionship and Easter cheer.

Every dog has its day!
Staff and residents got up close and personal with a furry friend when they celebrated all the wonderful things about man’s best friend for upcoming International Guide Dog Day.
Residents had a visit from therapet Korky, who worked as a guide dog for many years before retiring and becoming a beloved therapet. His owner Sandy spent time chatting to our residents explaining about all the different roles and responsibilities guide dogs have and how the dogs are trained. Our residents enjoyed learning about the crucial work they do for their owners.
Cheese and wine afternoon
Residents at South Grange were treated to a well-deserved cheese and wine afternoon. Residents were pleasantly surprised to see the activity girls making their way throughout the home, with a well-prepared cheese and wine tuck trolley.
Eyes lit up and smiles spread as they made their way around the home, going room to room and through the lounges, making sure everyone, even those who prefer to relax in their own home comforts, had the offer of a little treat. Residents enjoyed slices of cheese served with a range of different crackers and an optional spoonful of pickle on the side.
To top it off, they were offered a small glass of red or white wine to wash it down. The visit brought laughter, conversation and a lovely social moment, turning a simple afternoon into a special and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Indoor cinema experience
Residents and family members at South Grange were treated to a fun indoor cinema experience that transformed an ordinary afternoon into something warm and special. Our lounge had the curtains closed and lights dimmed like a real cinema, with residents in comfy chairs and wheelchairs arranged in rows, and each resident received a cheerful snack box filled with a hot dog, crisps, a packet of biscuits or sweets and a nice glass of fizzy juice to wash it down. Laughter filled the room as they watched the comedy film Murder Mystery, with its twists and hilarious moments keeping everyone fully engaged. Staff joined in, sharing the laughter and making sure all drinks were topped up when needed. The atmosphere was warm and uplifting, leaving everyone smiling long after the film had ended. It was a lovely afternoon, enjoyed by all those involved.
National Shortbread Day
South Grange marked National Shortbread Day with a delicious celebration enjoyed by residents and staff. To honour the day, the activity girls put together a special tuck trolley filled with a tempting selection of different shortbreads, from classic buttery fingers to crumbly rounds.
To make the occasion even more special, there was plenty of sherry on hand to wash the treats down, adding a touch of tradition and cheer. The tuck trolley travelled from room to room, with staff stopping to have a chat and offering each resident a sweet treat. Smiles quickly spread as residents sampled the shortbread, shared memories and enjoyed a relaxed sociable moment. It was a simple but much loved way to celebrate the day together.
International Waffle Day
Residents of South Grange nursing home came together to celebrate International Waffle Day with smiles and excitement. Using store-bought waffles, warmed up until perfectly crisp and golden, filling the room with a warm and comforting aroma. The real excitement came when it was time to select their toppings of choice. Residents had a variety of different fresh fruits like strawberries and blueberries, which were a popular choice, alongside a generous serving of whipped cream, melted chocolate and some fruit-flavoured sauces. Each resident enjoyed creating their own unique combination, expressing personal tastes and creativity.
Laughter and conversation flowed as they shared stories and reminisced about their younger days, making it not only a tasty treat but also a good social occasion for our residents. Everyone involved had a lovely afternoon and enjoyed the celebration for International Waffle Day.
Nutrition and Hydration week
Residents, staff and family members at South Grange had a fantastic time taking part in activities to celebrate Nutrition and Hydration week. One of the highlights was a flavoured tea tasting session, where everyone enjoyed sampling a variety of teas including Berry Blast, Strawberry and Raspberry, Pure Peppermint, Lemon and Ginger and Chamomile. Residents chatted about their favourites while learning about the importance of keeping well hydrated.
Later in the week, residents also had fun creating their own refreshing mocktails and cocktails. Using a selection of fruit juices, fizzy drinks, fresh fruit and optional alcohol, everyone mixed their own colourful creations and enjoyed sipping them, enjoying the sunshine. The activities were a great way to encourage hydration while bringing lots of laughter, conversation and enjoyment to the home.
Six nations taste test
Residents at South Grange enjoyed a lively Six Nations taste test to celebrate the start of the famous rugby tournament, bringing excitement, conversation and plenty of flavour to the day. A specially prepared tuck trolley travelled from room to room and through the lounges, giving everyone the chance to take part, including those who prefer to stay cosy in their own spaces. The trolley featured either a food or a drink inspired by each nation competing in the championship, from traditional snacks to well-known treats associated with each country.
For Scotland, we had shortbread fingers and Irn Bru, for England we had scones with butter and jam, for Ireland we had Guinness, for Wales we had Welsh cakes, for France we had a baguette with butter and for Italy, of course, we had pizza! Residents sampled the different flavours and had fun trying to guess what nation each item represented, sparking friendly debates and laughter. The activity encouraged social interaction and shared a sense of celebration as anticipation for the rugby games grew.
105th birthday celebrations
Residents and staff at South Grange came together to celebrate a remarkable milestone as Lizzie marked her 105th birthday. The round room was filled with smiles and applause as Lizzie was presented with gifts, flowers and a special birthday card from King Charles, making the day even more memorable. Fellow residents joined staff to share stories, laughter and cake, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere. Lizzie said the secret to her long life was “having family around me”.
She laughed as she admitted she could hardly believe the staff when they first told her she was turning 105, joking that it didn’t feel possible. The celebration was a special moment for everyone involved.

Don't dine alone
This Christmas, South Grange opened its doors to the local community by hosting a heartfelt “Don’t Dine Alone” event. The invites offer the local members of the community to join the care home residents for a delicious three-course meal, some warm company and lively conversation. We had a lovely lady take us up on the offer and join us for lunch the Friday before Christmas. The afternoon was filled with chatter and laughter as she and residents Bob and Margaret enjoyed lunch together.
This was more than just a meal, it was companionship, connection and the chance to enjoy some meaningful conversation in a warm and friendly setting. By bringing people together, we hope to reduce loneliness during the holiday season and create lasting memories for everyone involved, proving that Christmas is truly about kindness and community spirit.
The Basin Belles Perform at South Grange
We welcomed back The Basin Belles for another fun and lively afternoon. The dancers brought a wonderful burst of energy and colour to South Grange this Easter, creating a truly memorable afternoon for all the residents, family members and staff who attended. Dressed in bright, cheerful outfits that reflected the spirit of the season, dressed up as bunnies and bumblebees. The group immediately lifted the mood as they began their performance. Their music and coordinated dances filled the room with joy and smiles spread across everyone’s faces.
They warmly encouraged the residents, family members and staff to join in, and several of them happily got up to dance, clapping, swaying along and having a wonderful time. A particularly touching moment of the afternoon was when one of our residents presented the group with a handmade wooden name plaque that he had spent time carefully crafting himself, it was clear how much pride and thought had gone into the piece. The Basin Belles were genuinely moved by the gesture. It was such a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all those involved.
St Patrick's Day Concert
Our residents here at South Grange enjoyed a wonderful afternoon celebrating St. Patrick's Day with a lively concert from one of our local musicians, Grant Reilly. The room was beautifully decorated with bright green colours and plenty of clovers, creating a festive atmosphere for all to enjoy. Staff joined in the fun by dressing up for the occasion, adding to the cheerful spirit of the day.
As Grant played a mix of well-loved Irish tunes along with some crowd favourites from the 50s/60s. Residents clapped and sang along to their favourite songs and many even got up to dance. Laughter and music filled the room, making it a memorable celebration. It was lovely to see the residents, staff and visitors all coming together to enjoy the music and make such a joyful occasion.
Burn's Night
Residents at South Grange enjoyed a wonderful Burns Day celebration, with the dining rooms beautifully decorated in tartan and tributes to Rabbie Burns creating a festive Scottish atmosphere. The sound of bagpipes filled the corridors as a piper toured the home, playing traditional tunes that brought smiles and memories to many.
A special highlight was when Joe, the husband of one of our ladies, proudly addressed the haggis, delivering the classic tradition to the residents. Residents and staff gathered together, clapping and joining in the celebrations before sitting down to a delicious traditional Scottish lunch. Our chefs prepared haggis, neeps and tatties, which was enjoyed by all. To complete the celebration, residents enjoyed a “wee dram” of whisky, raising a toast together. The day was filled with music, conversation and memories, sharing cultural appreciation, making it a memorable occasion.
Scottish dancing with our little friends
The local nursery children enjoyed their weekly visit to South Grange this week, bringing lots of smiles and energy with them. The visit was filled with fun, laughter and meaningful moments shared between the children and residents. The children entertained the residents with some traditional Scottish dancing, including the Gay Gordons. The residents were delighted and some joined in, getting up to dance alongside the children. It was heart-warming to see the generations interacting, laughing and dancing together.
After dancing, the children handed out some tasty scones that they baked for the residents, a well-deserved treat after all the dancing! These visits continue to be a highlight for residents and help create strong community connections.
The Basin Belle’s Festive Performance
The Basin Belles brought festive joy to South Grange this Christmas with a sparkling dance performance full of warmth and cheer. All dressed in bright, seasonal costumes with twinkling accessories, the dancers performed to some much-loved Christmas songs everyone knows and loves. Their routines are uplifting, gentle and fun, creating a wonderful atmosphere for the residents, families and staff alike.
As classic carols and the most popular Christmas hits filled the room, the residents clapped and sang along. Some residents even got up on the dance floor and danced along with the dancers. We even had a good laugh throwing around massive Christmas baubles that the dancers had as accessories. What a great afternoon everyone had! The Basin Belles believe dancing is for everyone and their visits always promise laughter, joy and connection. It was a truly magical Christmas celebration that left everyone’s spirits lifted, long after the music ended.
