Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Natasha Rubin

Activities Coordinator

G’day! My name is Natasha and I am the activities lead here at Strachan House. I am Australian born and bred, braving the dark and the cold here in Edinburgh to enjoy the beautiful nature and wonderful people! I have a background in team management and design. I have always loved working with people and have a strong interest in mental health and well-being, recently embarking on a psychology degree with an interest in specialising in Art Therapy. I am working with the team to create a vibrant, engaging and person-centred home.

World Cocktail Day

World Cocktail Day is a global celebration of cocktails; it marks the publication date of the first definition of a cocktail on May 13 in 1806.

Residents learnt about the history as well as a quiz about the symbolic meaning behind some of the most famous cocktails. Then it was time to try our hand at not just making but tasting them.

Here at Strachan we created our own cocktail and we have named it "The Secret Strachan".

What a way to end a busy week here at Strachan House

Special Celebrations at Strachan House

Congratulations to Heather who has received a prestigious 25 Year Service Award in celebration of working at Barchester Healthcare for 25 years.

All the staff at Strachan House would like to take the opportunity to say a big thankyou for your service.

International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.

Today our residents and staff celebrated our nurses here at Strachan House with treating them to Afternoon Tea where they could sit, relax and enjoy others looking after them for a change. Residents reminisced whilst writing special notes to our Nurses. We learnt what it took to train as a nurse then and now and just how much passion you need to do the job. We all agreed that our Strachan House nurses are all very special.

Exercise fun at Strachan House!

We all enjoyed a session of exercise after lunch today. It was hula hoop madness and how very talented our residents are doing their moves.

As ever big thanks to George who visits and does the sessions fortnightly. All residents are looking forward to his next visit. In the meantime we will keep practicing those hula moves.

National Doughnut Week

We celebrated National Doughnut Week here at Strachan House . And what a delicious celebration it was. Residents enjoyed learning the history of this sweet treat and certainly enjoyed the tasting session.

Did you know?

In 1917, the original doughnut was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.” A more standard spelling of the word in the USA is “donut.” But we know them as doughnuts here.

Cinco de Mayo

To celebrate Cinco Des Mayo we took the opportunity to hang some bunting, shake our maracas, dress up and enjoy some traditional Mexican music, along with delicious dishes, prepared by our talented chef.

During the day, the Piñata was great fun and we all learnt something new about the meaning of the Mexican festival.

Great fun had by everyone!
