What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"I cannot say a bad thing about Strachan House; the care they give is excellent, and they take good care of their residents."

"My wife, a former nurse with dementia experience, has lived cheerfully with vascular dementia for 6 yrs. We needed a respite break and were pleased that Strachan House had space and was flexible about dates. We had looked around the home some 30 yrs ago and had since followed its fine reputation locally. For 10 days my wife was happy with the kind friendship, and I was delighted to see the homely ambience and well-organized care she enjoyed. I will not hesitate to seek another respite break at Strachan House. Occasional respite will help me to continue as sole carer for as long as possible. However, as we are both 81 and her dementia progresses, it is reassuring to know that permanent care may be available there in due course."

"Wonderful care home. My husband has been coming here for respite care for the last few years and he absolutely loves it. Being very disabled and not able to do anything for himself he requires a high level of care. Not only does he get that here the staff also try to involve him in as many activities as possible, which he really enjoys. I really can't praise Barchester Strachan House Care Home and staff highly enough. It is just so nice for me to be able to step back and get a well needed rest and know my husband is in safe hands and having a ball."

"My aunt lived in Strachan House for several years and I cannot praise the entire team highly enough for the exceptional care she received every day and for the happy and content life that she lived and enjoyed whilst a resident in the home. Strachan House was her home and that's exactly how she felt, at home which is a credit to every staff member working flawlessly together to create such a fabulous atmosphere with the resident and their wellbeing always being the priority. My family and I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to every member of the Strachan House team for the care, respect and dignity given to my aunt over many years, which was equally shown to all my aunt's family and friends, which is not only greatly appreciated but also the sign of an outstanding care home. Thank you all."

"I was a bit perturbed when my aunt first came into the home and did not seem to be settling. The change in the last two weeks has been amazing and she seems to be very happy in her new home, which is down to you and your team."

"The staff have been tremendous. Mum took some time to adjust to living in residential care, having been self-sufficient previously. Mum has been helped to make the change, and she has made quite a number of friends."

"The care team at Strachan are excellent under the supervision of the manager, with lots of activities to help the residents and staff that are friendly and attentive, the setting of the property is also appealing with a lovely garden and a peaceful location. The property being purpose-built is very user friendly with all facilities in good condition, it exudes a homely atmosphere from the moment you come through the front door. My mother's stay was sadly a short one, but I know that her time at Strachan was a happy one and my family appreciated the efforts of all the staff to make it that way."

"Our mother has now been in Barchester Strachan House Care Home for a couple of months. The staff are very approachable and friendly and have taken the time to try and make this difficult transition easier for her. The home itself is well laid out, comfortable and clean and with a lovely garden, and we feel that our mother is being well looked after and supported."

"Having had excellent NHS hospital treatment 14 months ago, I was worried as to where I would be moved for long-term care. The family looked around and luckily found me a room here. There was everything I needed and more. A team of physiotherapists are included and provide customised exercise and gym programmes for you. Three-course meals with choices for lunch and dinner, plus a glad of your favourite drink. Mealtimes were too early for me but I soon adapted. My progress was not good (heart failure) 14 months ago but thanks to the care from all who run the happy ship that is Strachan House, I am still able to write this note today."

"Last June when I was no longer able to cope on my own, I knew where I should go. My father-in-law had been a patient here for some time. The garden is exceptional, having been cultivated over many years with a sheltered area to the south with many seats. There are two handymen who will arrange any furniture you require and hanging family portraits! There is a hairdresser available, along with a chiropodist. I am still happy with my original choice."

"House located in lovely gardens, staff very helpful. Rooms very small. Facilities lack a shower or bath in ensuite. Food could be more appealing. Activites good. Safety seems satisfactory. Poor value for money."

"My mother and a friend of mine have both been residents at Strachan. They have both been very happy there and have felt completely at home. The standard of care is excellent and delivered in a calm and compassionate manner. There is always something to keep their interest, be it activities, visitors, meal times, enjoying the beautiful surroundings, or relaxing in their room. The ethos is that it is the resident's home and the staff are there to help. I can recommend Strachan wholeheartedly."

"Exception care of my mother through Covid with every effort made to keep relationship with her as close as regulations allowed. Move to memory lane handled exceptionally well and at right time. When she was very willing to accept the extra help and security it offered with the sun back out in the wonderful gardens for a visit which is great for both of us."

"The staff are incredibly kind and caring to my father who is in the dementia area. My father needs constant attention, hygiene, and assistance with meals this is carried out with the minimum of fuss. Music seems to be the one thing that my father relates to, so it's good to see him happy and enjoying himself at these moments."

"I would like to thank Barchester Strachan House Care Home, Edinburgh and the staff who care for my mum. The care she receives is exceptional. The home is warm, clean and inviting and the staff are very friendly and always smile when I visit. There are plenty of activities organised for the residents and I've never heard my mum being bored. The care staff pay a lot of attention to detail and my mum's needs are always met with respect and dignity. Food is of good quality and if Mum fancies a glass of wine with her evening meal she gets it. I rate this care home very high. Nothing but a positive experience."

"My father has been a resident in the Memory Lane section of Barchester Strachan House Care Home for three months now and is thriving despite his advanced dementia. He loves to spend time in the safely enclosed garden, enjoys the activities and is eating well. The staff are caring, kind and respectful, engaging with the residents as individuals and always take time to discuss his needs and care with us. The management team is flexible, supportive and empathetic as we navigate this journey as a family and I really feel that he couldn't be in better hands."

"I have found Strachan House to be a very pleasant and welcoming home for my very elderly parents, both of whom entered Strachan House due to their Alzheimer's. Upon my Mother's death, I found the staff to be extremely sensitive and loving. Strachan House has caring staff led by a leadership team who set a great example and encourage a down-to-earth approach to the care and well-being of the residents and concern for their families."

"Barchester Strachan House Care Home sits in beautiful landscaped gardens, the design and furnishings high standard. You are met by delighted, welcoming, highly professional staff who go out of their way to provide the highest possible level of care, medical assistance, sophisticated as well as client-centred entertainment and activity programmes for residents. A hair salon, physiotherapy centre, outstanding manageress, incredible chef providing most nutritious, varied, delicious menus all throughout the day. Since my father has moved to Strachan House, he has made so many great friendships, has been on fantastic outings, even to a golf course. Staff are devoted to providing the highest level of care and also the greatest degree of happiness and fulfilment for the residents, with an excellent manageress. Family of residents made so welcome. Dad is now living a sociable life again, with excellent health support. Cheerful staff dedicated to providing the highest standard of care and happiness."

"Given the events of the last 9 months and having seen how well this house is run, I felt I needed to write a review. Strachan House is such an oasis of calm in today's hectic and worrying world. The manager and her staff do amazing work, especially just now currently under such trying circumstances. The residents are really well cared for and the house is immaculate - it is such a kind, warm and welcoming environment. I would not hesitate to recommend Strachan House to anyone."

"My father has been at Barchester Strachan House Care Home for over four years and the care he has received has been excellent throughout. He is now in the dedicated dementia unit, Memory Lane, where he receives specialised care for Alzheimer's disease. Every single member of staff is excellent, caring, warm and cheerful! Individual needs and interests are met and catered for. The home itself is warm, welcoming, clean and tidy. It has lovely, large gardens which allow residents to safely enjoy the outdoors. I have complete peace of mind knowing my father is being well cared for."

"My wife has been a resident in the dementia section of the home for the past 12 months. Over that period, all the natural fears and concerns that arise from placing a loved one in the full-time care of others have been resolved as a result of the exceptional care which she receives from all the staff. The empathy, patience and professionalism that they show to all the residents, often in trying circumstances, is quite remarkable. It is a relief and pleasure to see my wife so happily settled and secure in her new surroundings. All the facilities and medical back-up provided by the home are first class and the whole team ensures that the operation runs smoothly and efficiently."

"Strachan House is set in beautiful grounds and inside this lovely home is nicely decorated, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Without exception, all members of the team are kind, friendly, welcoming and above all, highly professional in their delivery of care. They take a genuine interest in the individual residents and their families. I believe the culture of kindness and exceptional care is set by the manager who takes a keen interest in every aspect of the running of the home. Facilities are also excellent! Would recommend Strachan House to looking for the best care."

"Strachan House Care Home is a lovely warm, friendly and caring home. My first impressions were very positive. All the staff are welcoming and cheerful. "The staff at Memory Lane in Strachan House are simply excellent. My Mother has been a resident at Strachan House for almost 1 year. In that time, the nurses, carers and all the staff have got to know her extremely well. Nothing is too much trouble. I am happy that she is so well cared for. When I visit, I too am treated as part of the family. This is important to me as I miss my Mother."

"I regularly visit my wife at Strachan House, but at random hours. The latter presents no problem at all to the care home who welcome visits at any time. Although public transport is available nearby, on the adjacent street, I visit normally by car and very rarely have to park beyond the car parking provided on the grounds. The approach to the domestically styled accommodation is a via a very well set up, and maintained, bright and fresh garden. The interiors also are fresh, clean, tasteful, well maintained, and renewed regularly, to a high standard. The staff are always purposefully busy but equally are always welcoming. They will take the time to chat away and keep me updated on anything and everything happening. They also offer tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits etc regularly. This permeates the atmosphere at all times, an ambience of gentle and thoroughly professional caring. This makes my visits not stressful, but pleasant and reassures me constantly that my wife is getting the very best of care possible for her current condition."

"Strachan House sets the standard to which all care homes should aspire - at every level. Strong leadership is evident and all staff, without exception, are truly amazing. The environment is full of fun and laughter, and the staff work together as a highly effective team; their top priority being the exceptional care and quality of life of the residents. The rapport, engagement, love, kindness and respect shown to our dad are way beyond our family's expectations. The 'Memory Lane' team here have become part of our family and our dad, a part of theirs. For us, Strachan House is absolute peace of mind, and our Dad's very happy home."

"Quite astonishing level of care. The sympathy, generosity, friendliness and patience, let alone professionalism, of every member of staff from the very top through every level of care and support staff, including cleaning and maintenance staff, was quite humbling. One could not have asked for or even dreamed of more and we will be eternally grateful to every one of the staff."

"The special management and whole team are first class, professional and friendly. They provide in this daily work a wonderful environment and ambience. In one word homely and nothing seems too much trouble for them. I have probably been a little hard in some of my answers but have tried to stick to the right balance of my impressions. For example, how do you compare the food to a top class restaurant? In summing up, my mother is extremely happy residing in Strachan House and the care provided when she took ill most likely saved her life. Thank you, the family are very happy and grateful."

"As a family, we cannot praise Strachan House highly enough. My mother has now been a resident for 6 weeks and we are delighted with the care that she is getting. The staff have gone to great lengths to get to know her personally and work out how best to care for her to minimise any distress or agitation. The communication with the family is impressive and staff discuss all aspects of Mum's well-being and listen and act upon our suggestions. All staff greet us with a smile and are very supportive of my father and all the family during what has been a difficult time for everyone. All care homes should be like Strachan House!"

"I have found the staff very friendly and extremely supportive since my father was admitted. There is a wide range of activities each day from the excellent activity team who encourage residents to participate as much as possible. There is a varied choice of meals and an alternative menu is available when needed. The gardens are well cared for and have a beautiful selection of trees, shrubs and flowers. There are plenty of areas for sitting or walking outside the home which are easily accessible."

"This is Dad's first week at Strachan House - having moved from another care home in Edinburgh. The atmosphere is strikingly different. Here there is a real buzz. The staff are happy and extremely caring and welcoming. Dad has high falls risk but is fiercely independent and the staff watch him from a distance and give Dad as much independence as his condition allows, and treat him with real dignity. On day 1 Dad said he would like to see The Kelpies and the care home are planning a residents trip to see them. The staff engage with Dad so well - immediately grasping his likes, dislikes and life history. They have sourced a low bed and Dad's mobility has improved already as he is encouraged to mobilise and walk, assisted by staff. I think Dad will be happy here."
