"I would like to thank Barchester Strachan House Care Home, Edinburgh and the staff who care for my mum. The care she receives is exceptional. The home is warm, clean and inviting and the staff are very friendly and always smile when I visit. There are plenty of activities organised for the residents and I've never heard my mum being bored. The care staff pay a lot of attention to detail and my mum's needs are always met with respect and dignity. Food is of good quality and if Mum fancies a glass of wine with her evening meal she gets it. I rate this care home very high. Nothing but a positive experience."

"My father has been a resident in the Memory Lane section of Barchester Strachan House Care Home for three months now and is thriving despite his advanced dementia. He loves to spend time in the safely enclosed garden, enjoys the activities and is eating well. The staff are caring, kind and respectful, engaging with the residents as individuals and always take time to discuss his needs and care with us. The management team is flexible, supportive and empathetic as we navigate this journey as a family and I really feel that he couldn't be in better hands."

"Being of 'sound mind' but not body I have answered the ratings as best I can. I get very frustrated at times but play scrabble once a week, bingo (for a mars bar) twice a week. I have joined the book group (which has only met once) and the classical music group (which has met twice). I read a lot in my room, knit for the cat and dog home and for the premature baby unit. Food could be improved, nursing care is good - dispensing pills. Occupational therapists are excellent. Carers - not enough of them, but good on the whole."

"I can't praise the staff at Strachan House highly enough. They are all caring and thoughtful to residents and helpful and friendly to their family members. The facilities are comfortable and welcoming and there are lots of activities and trips out for residents. My father enjoys his meals and always looks happy and content when we visit."

"The staff at Strachan House gave my husband excellent care throughout his stay of more than three years. I am particularly grateful for the great care taken in the last few weeks of his life. It is one of the good qualities of the staff that they are always polite to the residents. Any minor inconveniences only affected me and never him. No home could have provided better treatment, I firmly believe."

"Although my aunt has only been in Barchester Strachan House Care Home for approx: 7 weeks. It has been obvious that the staff are well trained, they are friendly without condescending. Efficient without being obtrusive and seem genuinely keen to assist the residents. The home is clean and fresh. The nursing staff are caring and firm. I am delighted to have found such a place for anybody who needs 24/7 care."

"Warm, welcoming care home surrounded by well-kept gardens and caring and loving staff. Residents are treated with dignity and respect. The nurses and management are visible and approachable at all times. I am confident that my husband's care needs, which are complex, are being fulfilled in a caring environment."

"This is Dad's first week at Strachan House - having moved from another care home in Edinburgh. The atmosphere is strikingly different. Here there is a real buzz. The staff are happy and extremely caring and welcoming. Dad has high falls risk but is fiercely independent and the staff watch him from a distance and give Dad as much independence as his condition allows, and treat him with real dignity. On day 1 Dad said he would like to see The Kelpies and the care home are planning a residents trip to see them. The staff engage with Dad so well - immediately grasping his likes, dislikes and life history. They have sourced a low bed and Dad's mobility has improved already as he is encouraged to mobilise and walk, assisted by staff. I think Dad will be happy here."

"The staff at Memory Lane in Strachan House are simply excellent. My Mother has been a resident at Strachan House for almost 1 year. In that time, the nurses, carers and all the staff have got to know her extremely well. Nothing is too much trouble. I am happy that she is so well cared for. When I visit, I too am treated as part of the family. This is important to me as I miss my Mother."

"As a family, we cannot praise Strachan House highly enough. My mother has now been a resident for 6 weeks and we are delighted with the care that she is getting. The staff have gone to great lengths to get to know her personally and work out how best to care for her to minimise any distress or agitation. The communication with the family is impressive and staff discuss all aspects of Mum's well-being and listen and act upon our suggestions. All staff greet us with a smile and are very supportive of my father and all the family during what has been a difficult time for everyone. All care homes should be like Strachan House!"

"The special management and whole team are first class, professional and friendly. They provide in this daily work a wonderful environment and ambience. In one word homely and nothing seems too much trouble for them. I have probably been a little hard in some of my answers but have tried to stick to the right balance of my impressions. For example, how do you compare the food to a top class restaurant? In summing up, my mother is extremely happy residing in Strachan House and the care provided when she took ill most likely saved her life. Thank you, the family are very happy and grateful."

"Quite astonishing level of care. The sympathy, generosity, friendliness and patience, let alone professionalism, of every member of staff from the very top through every level of care and support staff, including cleaning and maintenance staff, was quite humbling. One could not have asked for or even dreamed of more and we will be eternally grateful to every one of the staff."

"My mother took a little while to settle as she has Alzheimer's disease but everyone at the care home was loving and caring and now my mother is happier than she has been for a few years. She loves music and dancing and there is always something for her to get involved in."

"Strachan House sets the standard to which all care homes should aspire - at every level. Strong leadership is evident and all staff, without exception, are truly amazing. The environment is full of fun and laughter, and the staff work together as a highly effective team; their top priority being the exceptional care and quality of life of the residents. The rapport, engagement, love, kindness and respect shown to our dad are way beyond our family's expectations. The 'Memory Lane' team here have become part of our family and our dad, a part of theirs. For us, Strachan House is absolute peace of mind, and our Dad's very happy home."

"I regularly visit my wife at Strachan House, but at random hours. The latter presents no problem at all to the care home who welcome visits at any time. Although public transport is available nearby, on the adjacent street, I visit normally by car and very rarely have to park beyond the car parking provided on the grounds. The approach to the domestically styled accommodation is a via a very well set up, and maintained, bright and fresh garden. The interiors also are fresh, clean, tasteful, well maintained, and renewed regularly, to a high standard. The staff are always purposefully busy but equally are always welcoming. They will take the time to chat away and keep me updated on anything and everything happening. They also offer tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits etc regularly. This permeates the atmosphere at all times, an ambience of gentle and thoroughly professional caring. This makes my visits not stressful, but pleasant and reassures me constantly that my wife is getting the very best of care possible for her current condition."

"My mother is very much at ease in the home. She suffers from Dementia and the staff are excellent. There has been a massive improvement in the common cares, with décor specifically for Dementia sufferers. The staff are very helpful and caring, they understand my mother and what she needs."

"I have found the staff very friendly and extremely supportive since my father was admitted. There is a wide range of activities each day from the excellent activity team who encourage residents to participate as much as possible. There is a varied choice of meals and an alternative menu is available when needed. The gardens are well cared for and have a beautiful selection of trees, shrubs and flowers. There are plenty of areas for sitting or walking outside the home which are easily accessible."

"Beautiful environment and grounds. Aesthetically pleasing and clean environment. But EMI unit requires RMN nurses to be employed to undertake appropriate specialist care of residents with advanced dementia. Staff require urgent training in medication being administered to patients prescribed antipsychotic medication and their side effects. Only a small cohort of care staff demonstrate effective distraction techniques. Unfortunately personal care delivery is not at an appropriate level to maintain dignity and respect for patients when demonstrating distressed behaviour. Food is of a very high standard and staff are very professional and caring in delivering this aspect of care however do not seem appropriately trained in the importance of hydrating clients when a client is ‘sundowning’. Very poor and inappropriate communication with family in front of other clients and relatives. Hence very mixed review but sadly lacking in specialist dementia care overall, unfortunately."

"Came here for two weeks respite care after operation for a replacement ankle. I want to stay forever! I love it here. The staff are lovely, caring and understanding and good fun. The accommodation is nice and spread out so that there is a central part to sit in and the lounge and dining room off it. But one can sit there and watch the world go by. Food is good and varied and served with patience and care. The garden is extensive and makes for a nice outing in fresh air if someone can push me! I cannot think of anything here that is not special, including my washing being done whenever, and the physios are helpful and attentive. The manageress drops by for a chat most days and is interested in those who stay here. I ordered my times daily and also had a glass of wine with my meal. Fantastic hotel! But more than that, care and support is part of the package! One is made to feel one matters!"

"Very positive, professional initial contact with managers. Reassurance was given when needed and my husband treated with dignity. After the initial reluctance to be left, my husband settled in very well and was happy and occupied. It was a positive experience of respite care which we hope to repeat. Lovely to see how fond the staff were of my husband and how positively he talked when he came home."

"Strachan House has provided outstanding levels of care and assistance to my husband over the past two years. Leaving someone you love with complete strangers is desperately difficult, but since the first day, the staff have been exceptionally kind and thoughtful and Strachan has become his home. I've been pleased to note that every member of staff, at every level, has always been friendly and helpful to residents and visitors. Many of the staff go the extra mile for the residents, thinking of things that might interest them and taking the time to talk to them and spend time with them which means they don't feel lonely. The activities and physio classes are a huge part of the day at Strachan, with imaginative staff managing to find a long list of things for residents to participate in and enjoy. Lockdown has been very hard, but I've had no concerns about the continued care and compassion in Strachan and I'm greatly relieved that my husband is as safe as he can be there."

"My aunt lived in Strachan House for several years and I cannot praise the entire team highly enough for the exceptional care she received every day and for the happy and content life that she lived and enjoyed whilst a resident in the home. Strachan House was her home and that's exactly how she felt, at home which is a credit to every staff member working flawlessly together to create such a fabulous atmosphere with the resident and their wellbeing always being the priority. My family and I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to every member of the Strachan House team for the care, respect and dignity given to my aunt over many years, which was equally shown to all my aunt's family and friends, which is not only greatly appreciated but also the sign of an outstanding care home. Thank you all."

"Wonderful care home. My husband has been coming here for respite care for the last few years and he absolutely loves it. Being very disabled and not able to do anything for himself he requires a high level of care. Not only does he get that here the staff also try to involve him in as many activities as possible, which he really enjoys. I really can't praise Barchester Strachan House Care Home and staff highly enough. It is just so nice for me to be able to step back and get a well needed rest and know my husband is in safe hands and having a ball."

"My wife, a former nurse with dementia experience, has lived cheerfully with vascular dementia for 6 yrs. We needed a respite break and were pleased that Strachan House had space and was flexible about dates. We had looked around the home some 30 yrs ago and had since followed its fine reputation locally. For 10 days my wife was happy with the kind friendship, and I was delighted to see the homely ambience and well-organized care she enjoyed. I will not hesitate to seek another respite break at Strachan House. Occasional respite will help me to continue as sole carer for as long as possible. However, as we are both 81 and her dementia progresses, it is reassuring to know that permanent care may be available there in due course."

"The care team at Strachan are excellent under the supervision of the manager, with lots of activities to help the residents and staff that are friendly and attentive, the setting of the property is also appealing with a lovely garden and a peaceful location. The property being purpose-built is very user friendly with all facilities in good condition, it exudes a homely atmosphere from the moment you come through the front door. My mother's stay was sadly a short one, but I know that her time at Strachan was a happy one and my family appreciated the efforts of all the staff to make it that way."

"Strachan House Care Home is a lovely warm, friendly and caring home. My first impressions were very positive. All the staff are welcoming and cheerful. There is always someone to chat to."

"Strachan House is set in beautiful grounds and inside this lovely home is nicely decorated, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Without exception, all members of the team are kind, friendly, welcoming and above all, highly professional in their delivery of care. They take a genuine interest in the individual residents and their families. I believe the culture of kindness and exceptional care is set by the manager who takes a keen interest in every aspect of the running of the home. Facilities are also excellent!
