Activities at Strachan House Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Life at Strachan House Care Home
Artful Adventures
They say that art is born of the observation and investigation of nature. We were able to immerse ourselves in nature whilst enjoying wonderful expressive sculptures at Jupiter Artland! It was so tranquil walking through the woods, admiring the varied and thought provoking art as we listened to the birds chirping, the leaves rustling with the wind and the sound of our footsteps. We enjoyed a tea and coffee in the sunshine at the welcoming cafe and a lovely picnic lunch. It was a lovely day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.
Into the deep....
Residents across our services enjoyed a fantastic virtual tour of The Deep, an award-winning aquarium in Hull.
Our residents dived into the underwater world of some fascinating creatures such as sharks, turtles and stingrays.
It was a truly immersive and educational experience that brought the wonders of the ocean right to our screens.
Outdoor Summer fun
As the weather has started to warm up and the sun has re-appeared (Sort-of!) we have been enjoying time outside in the fresh air. On a beautifully warm and sunny Saturday we decided to make the most of our beautiful garden with paddle pools, water pistols, games and ice lollies! We had such a lot of fun enjoying the beautiful day and enjoying the outdoors! We were also lucky enough to have the weather hold out for us as we enjoyed a day at the local botanical gardens. We were in awe of all the seasonal, vibrant flowers! It was delightful to take in the fresh air before enjoying a cup of tea at the cafe. A beautiful place to spend an afternoon indeed!
Dementia Action Week
This month held Dementia Action week, a cause we feel very deeply about! To raise awareness and highlight the importance of this initiative, we were a part of the collaborative Alzheimer’s Research UK and Cadbury 200 year reminiscence celebration. The celebration was choco-riffic, Cadbury supplying delicious chocolate bars in historical packaging, taking a trip down memory lane. We had the opportunity to go through a reminiscence box full of treasures thanks to Museum on the Mound! We found some fascinating and beautiful items and they were used to reminisce and start conversations about ways in which we grew up, jobs we did and places we went
Floral favourites
To pay homage and celebrate the Chelsea flower show, our ladies soaked in the rich aromas and vibrant colours of both store bought, and foraged flowers and greenery from our beautiful garden. We had avid flower lovers, including one of our memory lane residents who spent many years as a florist! She showed us the ropes and helped other residents to make important compositional decisions. We also collected daisies and reminisced on our childhoods as we created daisy chain bracelets. Everyone was chuffed with the final outcomes and we now have gorgeous blooms dotted throughout the home.
Home present cheque to local charity
Strachan House care home in Blackhall recently presented Parental Advocacy and Rights (PAR) with a cheque for £800 to towards transport costs for this charity's disabled members to take part in their activities.
Parental Advocacy and Rights (PAR) started as a community group in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2015 meeting in the Serenity Café, a community hub for people in recovery from drugs and alcohol. Mothers were constantly asking for support and help when their children were in the children protection system and they felt overwhelmed, often they did not have legal representation, did not understand procedures and processes and did not feel they were part of plans for their children.
