Activities at Strachan House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at Strachan House Care Home

Double celebrations

Strachan House Care Home in Edinburgh marked the Queen’s 95th birthday on April 21st in style by brewing up a storm for National Tea Day and having an afternoon tea party.

Head chef, Mark Murray whipped up a tasty selection of freshly-baked biscuits, pastries and cakes for the occasion, all washed down with a selection of different teas.  Residents took part in royal and tea-themed sessions including virtual tours of royal palaces, watching old clips of royal tours and occasions, a royal quiz, learning facts about tea growing and production, virtual tours of tea plantations and a virtual visit to a tea factory.

Daniella Zampieri, Deputy General Manager at Strachan House Care Home said: “Our residents love nothing more than a good cuppa so they all really enjoyed the choice of different teas, cakes and events for National Tea Day, and, as a nation who truly loves their tea, it was great excuse for an afternoon brew and a natter. It was also a lovely way to say thank you to our longest reigning monarch.”

Easter celebrations at Strachan

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan House care home, in Edinburgh, celebrated Easter with a whole host of different activities including. Our residents attending a live church service, Easter daffodil tea party, Easter cake-making, Easter Bonnet Competition & parade.

Residents also tucked in to a delicious Easter meal of roast lamb with all the trimmings followed by Easter cake prepared by the home’s head chef Mark Murray.

Visits bring joy to Residents

For residents at Strachan House care home in Edinburgh, the long awaited reunion with two family members has become a reality, as two named visitors are now allowed to visit each resident in their bedroom.  Family members must visit separately, at different times.

There has been much anticipation of this moment by families and residents alike.  Guidance was issued by the Scottish Government at the end of February and Barchester Healthcare, who run Strachan House care home, is proceeding with a safe and cautious approach to visiting. Strict protocols are in place with all visitors required to have a negative Lateral Flow Device test result before being allowed into the home, and infection control measures and social distancing in place for every visit.

Despite the need for testing and social distancing, it was still welcome news for so many residents and their family members to be able to meet in the comfort of their bedroom. Resident, Clive Birnie and their Daughter enjoyed getting together and catching up face to face.

Held on March 17th, Saint Patrick's Day actually observes the death of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, but the day has come to be a huge celebration of Irish heritage and culture.
