Activities at Strachan House Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Read our brochure 'Life-enriching activities' for more information about life in our care homes.

Life at Strachan House Care Home
Home host intergenerational talk with local school
Strachan House care home, in Edinburgh have recently hosted an intergenerational ‘meet and greet’ with General Manager, Eileen Crawford to talk about the home and what life is like for the homes residents.
The local children from Blackhall Primary school came prepared with lots of questions, they wanted to find the answers to how a nursing home is run and the role of looking after older people. The event, which took place on 11th of June 2021 welcomed the group of young children from our local primary school Blackhall Primary to have an interview with our manager to ask these question
The group of children also enjoyed seeing our gardens and asking questions to our General Manager about our residents here at Strachan House. The activities team at the care home provided a selection of ice cream treats on the day.
Hereford Cathedral virtual event
We had a lovely time joining the team from Hereford Cathedral for an exciting virtual session.
We enjoyed a glimpse of this spectacular building and its treasures in a series of short pre-recorded videos. From the stunning gardens which lead down to the River Wye, to the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library.
It was wonderful to learn more about the history and beauty of Hereford Cathedral.
The good life!
Residents of Strachan House have been busy growing their own plants as part of the homes gardening club and life enrichment programme.
Residents have been planting some seedlings a few weeks ago and decided to take advantage of a rare sunny afternoon to re-pot them. We now have an anxious wait to see what happens – and hopefully identify what plants they are!

After almost 9 years of continuous service at Strachan House Care Home in Edinburgh much-loved carer, Liezlgale Albores has decided to leave for pastures new.

Residents make a bee-line
Staff and residents at Barchester’s Strachan house care home in Edinburgh were buzzing when they celebrated World Bee Day on May 20th.
Created by the UN, World Bee Day is an annual global event raising awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping for the survival of our ecosystems. Three out of four food crops across the globe rely on bees and other pollinators but those pollinators are under threat from human activities.
Residents had a bee-rilliant time having a talk from Lauriston castle resident bee keeper john Jeffrey. We learnt about the history of bee-keeping and the importance of bees for food production, we had a zoom meeting with john our local bee keeper virtually and enjoying a tour of his hives, we also held a tasting session of his local honey he makes at Lauriston castle as well as having a bee -biscuit with our cup of tea, making a bee home for the garden and planting some bee friendly flowers in the garden.
