Activities at Tyspane Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
Jacqui Conroy
Jacqui and her team devise and plan fun group activities and events for all our residents, including pamper days, gentle exercise classes and music therapies. Regular one to one sessions and smaller groups are tailored to residents specific needs and hobbies with gardening and crafts amongst the most popular.

Life at Tyspane Care Home
The most important impact on society and the world is the telephone!
The telephone revolutionized communication by allowing conversations to take place between individuals at different locations. Telephones still offer faster interactions than email, are more personal, and quick and easy to use. Furthermore, despite advancements in social media, instant messaging, texts, and video calls, the telephone is still used by 92% of all customers and is still thought of as one of the best for forming relationships.
Therefore, it was lovely to hear David, our Resident Ambassador contacting his family and friends at reception. He never stopped smiling, laughing and telling stories about the past and present. It brought tears to my eyes.
David said, “Thank you, it was lovely to talk to my family.”
Tyspane Care Home understands the importance and need for residents to feel emotionally connected to their families and friends as it allows them to experience higher levels of happiness and satisfaction. These close relationships provide a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
So, remember every phone call with someone is a little slice of heaven….
Tyspane Care Home – Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning
Macmillan Cancer Support started their first Coffee Morning in 1990. It was a small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their drink to Macmillan. It was so effective, they did it again the next year - only this time nationally. Now Coffee Mornings come in all shapes and sizes. From small home gatherings to large corporate events; school fundraisers to a gathering with a local community group. They all have one thing in common - they raise vital funds to support the more than 3 million people in the UK living with cancer.
Tyspane Care Home residents, families, friends and staff will be supporting and celebrating the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning today with the help of Tyspane Care Home Baking Club who will be making an array of delicious cakes for everyone at Tyspane Care Home.
Heather (Resident and Baking Club Member) stated, “ The cakes look beautiful and are for a good cause.”
Geoff (Relative), “You spoil me!”
World heart day!
World Heart Day is a global event that occurs on the 29th September. Celebrations are intended to increase public awareness of cardiovascular diseases, including prevention and their global impact.
Tyspane Care Home to support and shine a light on this amazing cause will be holding a dazzling party in the lounge this afternoon. Refreshments and freshly baked jam shaped hearts will be baked by Tyspane Care Home Baking Club and enjoyed whilst listening to the talented Jonathan perform a wide range of musical styles on his saxophone.
David (Resident Ambassador) stated, “Everyone is welcome to support this very worthy event, the more the merrier.”
To honour this year’s theme of the World Heart Foundation – Use Heart For Action.
True hospitality!
True Hospitality consists of giving the best of yourself to your guests.
We at Tyspane Care Home pride ourselves in ensuring that we know what each of our residents like and what they need and we know how important that it is to celebrate special occasions.
Birthdays are an opportunity to express gratitude, acknowledge, and celebrate life. They are a time to surround ourselves with loved ones, build deeper connections, and experience the joy of human connection. When we celebrate our birthdays, we are essentially celebrating ourselves.
So today, activities and hospitality joined forces to prepare a special birthday celebration for David and his family, David will be celebrating his 80th birthday.
Tracy (David’s Daughter) stated, “He will love this event, the photo on the cake is what he is like when he is happy.”
Wendy (David’s Wife) replied, “Thank you for making this happen.”
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Motivation is important for older adult because it can help them maintain their physical and mental health, social connections, and ability to cope with life transitions. Supporting residents to sustain their motivation gives them a sense of purpose, sense of accomplishment, prevents cognitive decline and supports mental health.
Tyspane Care Home understands that motivation can be more difficult to maintain as people age, however, there are strategies and mindsets that can help older adults over obstacles and stay motivated. Providing meaningful challenges, activities and supporting residents’ interests helps create motivation as well as the hidden bonus of social interactions.
Vernon (a long-term resident) has embraced this concept and designed non-profitable sweep stakes for residents and staff which has allowed them to share successes and build trust.
Vernon stated, “I love doing sweep stakes, and now I talk to everyone.”
Thank You Vernon for supporting team cohesion and supporting the values of Tyspane Care Home.
Good Friends Club – Sharing a meal builds community.
Fish and Chips is a popular dish that has a complex history, including its origins. The dish may have originated in Belgium or France in the 17th Century. However, the practice of battering and frying fish is thought to have originated with Sephardic Jews who fled Spain and Portugal in the 15th century. They would fry fish on Fridays to prepare for the Sabbath, and the batter preserved the fish so it could be eaten cold the next day. The dish became popular in London, where it was sold on the streets all day. Joseph Malin, a Jewish refugee, opened the UK’s first fish and chip shop around 1860.
Tyspane Care Home, as we all know is very close to the sea, near Saunton Sands and has one for best fish and chips in North Devon, some would say in the country – Squires. Originally established in 1969, the Squires family have spent over 50 years establishing a reputation for serving award winning fish and chips. Their longevity in Braunton community and the legendary nature of its fish and chips, means Squires is almost synonymous with Braunton.
With this thought in our minds the residents of the monthly “Good Friends Club” requested for their evening event Squires Fish and Chips. The evening went swimming well (excuse the pun) residents, families, friends and staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Conversations and laughter could be heard all around the home.
Peter (Resident) said, “Just like home.”
Betty (Resident) stated, “Lovely evening.”
David (Resident Ambassador), “I very much enjoyed my battered sausage and gherkin.”
Remember food really does bring friends together.
