Femtosecond laser could revolutionise cataract surgery

Femtosecond laser could revolutionise cataract surgery

New studies have confirmed growing evidence that a new approach to cataract surgery is safer and more efficient than today's standard procedure.

The new approach, that uses a femtosecond laser, is FDA approved but is not yet widely available.

Dr William Culbertson, femtosecond laser researcher, stated: "In clinical practice, surgeons would expect safer, faster cataract surgery when laser pre-treatment is performed before cataract removal.

"The combination of precision and simplification that is possible with the femtosecond laser represents a major advance for this surgery."

It has previously been thought that femtosecond lasers have the potential to change cancer treatments, dentistry procedures and joint implant surgeries.

The femtosecond laser is unique in so far as it can interact with its target without transferring heat to the area surrounding its mark.

Moreover, the speed of the laser ensures that the heat does not spread and allows for precision destruction of small targets, such as cancer cells.
