Innovative dementia care home reaches topping out stage

A new dementia care home in Exmouth is on track to open this summer after it reached the topping out stage of the build. When construction is completed, Raleigh Manor will have the facilities to look after 75 residents and offer world-class dementia care.

McGoff Construction is building the home on behalf of Barchester Healthcare, finishing the latest stage on time. The purpose-built dementia care facility will offer a new option for the elderly in Exmouth and the surrounding areas.

The emphasis will be on dignity and choice for residents, who will benefit from staff that take the time to get to know them. Coupled with support and care tailored around their needs, Raleigh Manor is anticipated to be in high demand.

A spokesman for Barchester told the Exmouth Journal: "Staff at Raleigh Manor will celebrate life and ensure there is plenty on offer for all tastes and abilities."

At the centre of this philosophy is a life enrichment programme, which includes a mixture of activities old and new. Continuing to enjoy the things they love doing can be a concern for some residents going into care, so enabling this is key to ensuring a sense of continuity and joy.

Food can also be a huge source of comfort and Raleigh Manor’s staff will create seasonal menus that take into account residents’ preferences. These nutritional meals will be home cooked on site to ensure their quality is at the highest possible standard.

Residents with dementia will also be introduced to the memory lane community, which is an easy-to-navigate sensory environment. It incorporates a life skills kitchen to maintain as much independence as possible a multi-sensory projector for playing games and encouraging social interaction.

The spokesman summarised: "Our continually evolving approach to dementia care is developed through the latest research and our own expertise gained over the past 25 years, ensuring residents live a fulfilled, enriched and comfortable life."

Residents moving into Barchester’s newest home will be able to expect round-the-clock care and en suite bathrooms. While rooms will be furnished, they’ll also be welcome to bring any of their own furniture from home.
