Leicester MP launches summit on mental health care

Jon Ashworth, MP for Leicester South is to host a summit on mental health care at the city's Town Hall this Friday (March 15th).

The politician told the Leicester Mercury that the summit will stress the importance of providing "social support" to those with mental health issues.

"Key to social support, whether it be supported housing, drop-in facilities, getting out and about or educational activities, is the role of the voluntary and community sector and its relationship to the state sector," he added.

Gabby Briner, chair of the Voluntary Sector Partnership Forum for Mental Health, said the summit will provide an important chance for voluntary organisations, service users and care providers to share ideas on how mental health services can be improved.

She noted that there is a still a major lack of understanding around mental health issues in society and this often leads to social isolation and greater problems developing.
