Society urges reassurance from Southern Cross

The Alzheimer's Society has sought reassurance from troubled care home operator Southern Cross that people with dementia will be properly cared for as the company winds down.

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, called for a new dementia strategy to be implemented at Southern Cross, with the aim of improving care for the 62 per cent of residents living with the condition.

"We must make sure that any changes at Southern Cross are made in their best interests and that families are kept informed," he said.

Mr Hughes added: "We are hoping to work with new owners to make sure this vision becomes a reality."

The news comes as an All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia report revealed that funding is restricting the quality of care for people with the condition around the UK.

A number of recommendations were made in the report, including training staff and sharing best practice between organisations.
