Sports stars raise over £17k for dementia research

A group of former sports stars have raised over £17,000 for dementia research at a charity golf day.

Ex-footballers Tony Gale and Tony Cottee, as well as rugby World Cup-winner Richard Hill MBE were among those to appear at the event at the Lords Golf & Country Club.

The Alzheimer's Research Trust (ART), which is to receive a large portion of the money, said it was thrilled with the amount raised, as the chance to get industry figures together to have some fun.

Organised by the Basildon-based shipping agent the Bronel Group, the event will also make donations to the Francis Hospice and Little Havens Children's Hospice.

"We are delighted to have been selected as one of the charities to benefit from the golf day and are very grateful to the Bronel Group and everyone else involved," said Dr Marie Janson, director of development for the ART.

According to the Alzheimer's Society, the number of people living with dementia in the UK will exceed one million by 2025.
