Stem cells can rejuvenate old heart tissue

Stem cells have the ability to rejuvenate old and damaged heart tissue in heart failure patients, according to a recent study.

Researchers claim that older adults that experience heart failure could benefit from replacing their poor conditioned tissue, with healthier cells.

Dr Sadia Mohsin, one of the study authors and a post-doctoral research scholar at San Diego State University, commented: "Since patients with heart failure are normally elderly, their cardiac stem cells aren't very healthy.

"We modified these biopsied stem cells and made them healthier. It is like turning back the clock so these cells can thrive again."

The process works by improving the signalling and structure of heart cells using the stem cells, which have been modified with PIM-1, a protein that promotes cell survival and growth.

Telomerase enzymes are enhanced by the stem cells, increasing telomere length and repairing the damage done by age.

A balanced diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle will also help to ensure the heart stays healthy for longer as people get older.
