Stroke victim died after waiting over an hour for ambulance

A man who suffered a stroke died after he had to wait 76 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, reports say.

Ron Gibson, 78, died in Salford Royal two days after the incident in which he suffered a bleed on the brain.

Mr Gibson, from Greater Manchester, was lying on the couch when he began making gurgling noises and did not respond to questions.

His daughter told the BBC that she immediately phoned for an ambulance and a paramedic car arrived after 15 minutes but the paramedic could not give Mr Gibson the drugs without a brain scan first.

"We were told that they were extremely busy, but my father was dying," she told the BBC.

The medicine the grandfather needed was administered too late and there was not enough time for it to enter his system.

Meanwhile, researchers from the University of California Los Angeles found that nearly two-thirds of patients who have experienced a stroke will be readmitted or die within a year.
