UK scientists begin stem cell stroke treatment

Scientists in the UK have begun the world's first clinical trial research into the effects of stem cells on stroke damage.

Doctors at the University of Glasgow will be the first to inject neurological stem cells into patients, in the hope that they will be able to repair parts of the brain injured during a stroke.

The first patient has now undergone a successful surgical procedure and had been released from hospital, and a further 11 will undergo the pioneering treatment in the next few weeks.

Reacting to the news, Stroke Association research liaison officer Dr Sharlin Ahmed said that this particular technique was very promising, and could restore mind and mobility function in stroke patients.

"We are very excited about this trial; however, we are currently at the beginning of a very long road and significant further development is needed before stem cell therapy can be regarded as a possible treatment," he said.
