Activities at Hafan-Y-Coed Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Gents enjoy a Reptile Experience

Today we took the trip to Carmarthen on the Minibus with some of our brave gentlemen.

Everyone had the opportunity to hold a snake, spider, bearded dragon and turtle to name a few. Even our activities team held a snake around their neck….definitely not for the faint hearted.

Cliff said “That was a great day out with my pals. I especially enjoyed the pint on the way home”.

Holding on to summer!

Each week we sit down and discuss our favourite recipes and then make the most popular after a vote by the residents.

Our residents choice of recipe this month was to make Banana Splits. Highly likely to be one of our final summer recipes ahead of the winter warmer classics. We rolled up our sleeves and peeled our bananas before adding our favourite toppings, alongside our ice-cream flavour, whipped cream, finished off with a cherry or two.

The proof was in the pudding and they devoured every bit of this classic summer dessert!

Greek Day

Today we have taken a virtual trip to Greece with residents. With fairy lights twinkling and a botanical scene to create a perfect Greek restaurant! Some residents dressed up like Greek gods and goddesses and our activities team did some Greek dancing to music, whilst everyone smashed a plate or two, keeping with the Greek tradition. The hospitality team put on a fabulous Greek themed menu of, Tzatziki, Souvlaki, moussaka, followed by Greek yogurt and honey!

Day Trip To West Wales’ Favourite attraction

We have enjoyed various trip’s on the mini bus this month, but by far one of the residents favourites had to be the Trip to Folly Farm. We had planned the day for weeks ensuring those who had a love of animals were put forward to attend. Unfortunately we couldn’t have picked a wetter day for it, but it added to the fun! Let’s face it, we haven’t had the best weather this Summer so waiting for the next fine day was not an option. We packed up the bus with a picnic for all to enjoy at lunch, bought our fairground tickets in advance and planned the day with the map in hand. Cliff said “well, I haven’t been on fairground rides for years and it made me laugh out loud”. Indeg said her favourite part of the day was seeing the Giraffes and mentioned she hadn’t been to the farm since being a child and how much it had changed.

Alpaca and Toasted Marshmallows!

What a fabulous day out we enjoyed this month at a local Alpaca Sanctuary. We visited the Alpaca’s who were free to roam and be up close to our resident’s. Everyone had the opportunity to feed them and sit together in the field. Betty said “I can’t believe how relaxed and gentle they were and was thrilled I could stroke them and feed them. A memorable day out.”

Following on from the feeding time experience with the animals, it was the residents turn to enjoy a tasty treat. Everyone ended the day round a camp fire toasting marshmallows, whilst chatting about the wonderful day they’d enjoyed.

Weekly Pudding Demonstration’s

We have recently started a weekly pudding demonstration whereby the residents choose a favourite recipe to create and give their best method and tips for baking. Not only do the residents take turns in selecting the recipe, they enjoy taking part in helping create and of course eat the final result. We always enjoy the delights on the afternoon tea trolley each week and host a monthly pudding club with our favourites at the end of each month. As you can see from the photos, our theme this week was carrot cake, accompanied by our very own rabbit who helped in the process!
