Activities at Kirkburn Court Care Home

Here at Kirkburn Court, we aim to facilitate a personalised programme of meaningful activities, which are designed to promote independence, social stimulation and cognitive function. We strive to create a comfortable and safe environment where fun, creativity and individuality are encouraged. We feel it is important for us and residents to place value on yesterday, today and tomorrow – which is why we invest heavily in getting to know residents and learning their life history.

Our inclusive, yet respectful ethos is reflected in the wide range of activities we offer – ranging from larger structured group activities to one-to-one sessions. Our monthly activity programmes are extremely varied, but some of the activities you may expect to find include concerts, crafts, games, exercise sessions, reminiscing and outings. We also have a strong relationship with the local community and often invite external guests into the home, including performers, schools, and choirs.

Claire Burden

Activities Coordinator

I began my career with Barchester in December 2017. Having worked within the teaching profession for the preceding 8 years, I feel that I bring a range of transferable skills to the activities team.

I strongly believe that the provision of activities is about so much more than just structured, planned events – capturing and celebrating the little moments in daily life, such as enjoying a chat and a cup of tea together, are equally as important.

Activities, no matter how big or small, should be at the heart of every home and that individuality should be celebrated. In addition, I feel that activities should take a person-centred approach, which is why I enjoy spending time with the residents and learning about their preferences and their history.

My own interests include football, politics, crafting and drinking tea, and I enjoy nothing better than engaging with residents on these topics! I aim to bring energy, a friendly smile and a willing ear to the home each day.

Life at Kirkburn Court Care Home

Donkey Sanctuary

Across our services, Residents enjoyed a fantastic virtual tour of the Donkey Sanctuary Manchester.  Residents were thrilled to meet the lovely herd of donkeys, including Henry and his best friend Tiny Tim and to learn more about their every day care.  They were introduced to the sanctuary’s work and the impact they make to the lives of donkeys in need worldwide.  The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.

Fun with Jigsaws

Claire and Chris recently spent a rainy afternoon working on a jigsaw. Chris shared some of her tips as to the best way to tackle a jigsaw and it certainly paid off as they had it completed just in time for afternoon tea! There was a great feeling of satisfaction to see it completed and it was lovely to see some quality time between our team members and our lovely residents.

Quality 1-to-1 Time

Our team members enjoy spending some quality one to one time with our residents. Leah and Helen recently enjoyed a lovely afternoon fly cup whilst reminiscing about their favourite childhood memories. They had great fun chatting about the games they played and the differences between the generations.

World Children's Day

Our residents have recently celebrated World Children’s Day. We spent some time reminiscing about our favourite childhood games and even tried our hand at a few of them – including hopscotch and skipping! We also asked our residents if they would like to pass on any advice to the younger generation of today – they came up with some brilliant answers! Very wise words indeed!

Internation Men's Day

We have recently marked International Men’s Day by spending some time indulging the hobbies and interests of our lovely gentlemen. Lewis, Nelson and Bob had a lovely afternoon playing a few games of carpet bowls and dominoes. We also had some one-to-one sessions including reminiscing about farming and fishing and being taught how to complete Sudoku puzzles by Bill!

Remembrance Day

Our residents marked Remembrance Day by working hard to create some lovely collages to display in the home. They teamed up by colouring, painting, cutting and gluing to produce two lovely displays. Our residents also gathered in our lounges to watch the ceremonies on TV and to observe the minute’s silence.
