Activities at Kirkburn Court Care Home
Here at Kirkburn Court, we aim to facilitate a personalised programme of meaningful activities, which are designed to promote independence, social stimulation and cognitive function. We strive to create a comfortable and safe environment where fun, creativity and individuality are encouraged. We feel it is important for us and residents to place value on yesterday, today and tomorrow – which is why we invest heavily in getting to know residents and learning their life history.
Our inclusive, yet respectful ethos is reflected in the wide range of activities we offer – ranging from larger structured group activities to one-to-one sessions. Our monthly activity programmes are extremely varied, but some of the activities you may expect to find include concerts, crafts, games, exercise sessions, reminiscing and outings. We also have a strong relationship with the local community and often invite external guests into the home, including performers, schools, and choirs.
Claire Burden
I began my career with Barchester in December 2017. Having worked within the teaching profession for the preceding 8 years, I feel that I bring a range of transferable skills to the activities team.
I strongly believe that the provision of activities is about so much more than just structured, planned events – capturing and celebrating the little moments in daily life, such as enjoying a chat and a cup of tea together, are equally as important.
Activities, no matter how big or small, should be at the heart of every home and that individuality should be celebrated. In addition, I feel that activities should take a person-centred approach, which is why I enjoy spending time with the residents and learning about their preferences and their history.
My own interests include football, politics, crafting and drinking tea, and I enjoy nothing better than engaging with residents on these topics! I aim to bring energy, a friendly smile and a willing ear to the home each day.

Life at Kirkburn Court Care Home
Christmas parties
This month we held our annual Christmas parties – one in Buchan Neuk and one in Memory Lane. Our residents enjoyed a lovely buffet and some Christmas drinks before joining in with a series of party games including pass the parcel, reindeer hoopla and our Santa piñata! Although current restrictions meant that we were unable to have live music, we more than made up for that with our own singing and dancing to some classic party tunes! A great time was had by all.
Virtual Christmas tree competition
Following the huge success of last years competition, we decided to hold our Virtual Christmas Tree Competition again this December. We invited our local community to send in pictures of their Christmas trees and our residents then had the task of awarding a prize to the ‘best dressed’ tree. Our residents had a lovely time looking through all the entries and reminiscing about their favourite Christmas stories. It was a closely fought race but a worthy winner emerged after our deliberations!
Christmas Jumper Day
This December at Kirkburn, we have dusted off our Christmas jumpers and celebrated Christmas Jumper Day! Some of our staff and residents decided to get festive and looked out their Christmas gear – we even raised some money for Save the Children through kind donations from staff. We continued the festivities with a special screening of the film ‘White Christmas’ on our big projector screen – many nibbles were consumed! To round things off, our hot chocolate trolley then visited with a lovely warm sweet treat for everyone.
Magic of the Nutcracker
We experienced the magic of the Nutcracker with a special interactive workshop led by English National Ballet Associate Artists.
Our residents were able to take a magical journey thorough Edwardian London and to learn more about the enchanted Nutcracker characters: Clara, the Mouse King, and her valiant Nutcracker doll.
The session included a chair-based dance workshop, clips of the ballet on stage and a Christmas carol sing-along, truly enjoyed by all.
Christmas truffles
We had a lovely time joining Paul Hawkins and Steve Wilkes from Unilever for an exciting immersive Christmas experience.
Our residents were welcomed with chocolate treats as Paul and Steve took them on an exciting chocolate truffle making and biscuit decorating journey.
To finish off the Christmas special event, our residents enjoyed a themed quiz and a singalong.
We all had a wonderful time.
Creative workshop
We all had a wonderful time joining Jennifer Owen - founder of Goldfinch Floral Studio for a creative floral bauble workshop.
Jennifer transported our residents to the out of the ordinary world of flowers and crafts and demonstrated how to create stunning hand-made baubles filled with dried flowers and grasses.
Our residents enjoyed filling and decorating their own glass baubles and their unique creations will be displayed at the home for everyone to enjoy.
