Activities at Lucerne House Care Home
At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.
We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.
Alex Petersen
I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.
In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.
My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Life at Lucerne House Care Home
Knit and Natter Club
This month we have started a Knit & Natter group in our Memory Lane community at Lucerne House. Residents, relatives and staff all got together to have a laugh and a chat whilst knitting various items. Alex Petersen, Head of Activities was very pleased with the support from our relatives and has expressed a special thanks to Anne who taught him how to cast on and how to knit.
Linda, a relative at our home has been knitting wool cupcakes which everyone agreed were really good. Everyone who attended had a lovely time and we are looking to make this a regular event in the coming weeks and months. Look at our upcoming events section for more information on this and if you would like to join us then do pop in.
Great British Care Awards Regional Winner
Everyone at Lucerne would like to congratulate Alex Petersen, Head of Activities, on winning the Regional Great British Care award in the Care Home Activity Organiser category in 2019.
Alex said it was a great surprise and honour to be recognised for his work within the activities role/sector and commended his team for without them he would not have been able to achieve this. Alex will now go on to the National Great British Care awards which will be held in March 2020. We all wish him the best of luck
New Year's Fun
We have many exciting things to look forward to at Lucerne House in 2020 with new activities and meaningful engagements on the horizon. On New Year’s day we had an excellent time playing with the giant scrabble board. Two teams made up of residents and relatives competed against each other.
There was plenty of healthy competition and lots of banter, which really lifted our spirits and enthused us for the year ahead. Ernie, one of our residents, remarked on what a great game it was and how much everyone has seemed to enjoy it. Look out for more activities and events in our upcoming events section of our website and as always if you fancy joining us then do pop in.
Christmas at Lucerne
We have had a wonderful time over our festive period at Lucerne House with many different activities and events taking place. Some of our highlights have been the “La La” choir who have joined us for the 7th year running, Dally about the Bush performed “Puss in Boots”, we celebrated “Elf Day” and “Christmas jumper day”, entered a cake into Barchester’s cake competition and were joined by the Exeter Filipino Choir who delighted us with wonderful singing.
Ron Jampil who was part of the Exeter Filipino choir and head of our Ide Nursing Unit celebrated his birthday with us and we all sang happy birthday to him. It has been a wonderful time with lots of shared joy and we hope to enjoy many more events and meaningful engagements in the new year.
Elf Day
We have all had a great time on Elf Day! Staff, residents and relatives all donned their best elf outfits and spent the day enjoying the festivities. We had a tea party in the afternoon, which also involved a present wrapping competition. Everyone remarked on how fun the day had been and how good it was to support Elf Day, which helps to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.
Gentlemen’s Club
Our recently introduced Gentlemen’s club is proving a great place for our male residents to get together to socialise, reminisce and have the odd tipple. Recently the group have been joined by one of our relatives at the home who has a wealth of experience in wood carving.
The group have been practicing with plasticine and also had some demonstrations of other techniques and designs. Our Gentlemen’s club runs each week on a Thursday afternoon so if you would like to join us then do pop in.
