Activities at Thistle Hill Care Home
Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Snap Happy at Thistle Hill
To celebrate World Photography Day, we were delighted to hear from Professional Photographer, Damian Bailey who spent some time guiding us through different photography tips and techniques.
We all had a wonderful afternoon and are excited to be taking part in the #BaileyBarchester competition where we look forward to putting all the tips and ideas learnt during the talk into practice.
Thank you, Damian Bailey Photography.
Summer Fete brings community together
Staff, residents, relatives and the local community came together at the Thistle Hill Care Centre to enjoy a Summer Fete that was held in the home’s grounds on Sunday 15th August.
Thistle Hill Care Centre hosted a variety of activities throughout the day, including a BBQ, delicious home made cakes, tombola stall, live enternainment, games, which were enjoyed by everyone who came to the event.
Staff at the Thistle Hill Care Centre made everyone feel welcome and were delighted to see different generations having fun together. Visitors enjoyed plenty of refreshments, such as cold beers, iced tea, lambrini, burgers, chips, salads all prepared by the catering team, who were hard at work making sure that a great time was had by all – it really was a team effort!
Resident, Hazel, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surrounded by lots of great people, and the refreshments kept flowing. The weather held out until we finished. Staff did a great job, not just on the day, but organising the event and getting everyone together.”
International Youth Day
We celebrated International Youth Day virtually with English National Ballet’s youth dance company, ENBYouthCo and their Creative Director, Richard Bermange.
We had the opportunity to watch A Comedy in Long-shot, participate in a chair-based creative dance workshop and observe an open rehearsal where Richard and the young dancers created a performance inspired by our childhood memories.
It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all.
International Beer Day
It was a day of all things beer at the thistle hill care centre as our residents celebrated ‘International Deer Day’
Residents sampled a variety of different ales and enjoyed a variety of pub themed snacks; including freshly made fish and chips by our brilliant team in the kitchen.
With a varieties of ale on offer and a good old fashioned pub quiz our residents had an afternoon of fun, music and laughter.
Night fever - club culture
Staff and residents at Barchester’s Thistle Hill were treated to a talk about nightclub culture by V&A Dundee Curator, Kirsty Hassard. The presentation forms part of a series of six talks and virtual tours that V&A Dundee is hosting for Barchester Healthcare’s care homes and private hospitals across the UK.
V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum, it showcases Scotland’s outstanding design achievements and features world-class exhibitions alongside the permanent Scottish Design Galleries, and a changing programme of commissions, events and activities.
Kirsty’s talk looked at the history and design of night clubs, and examined club culture from the 1960s to the present day. She explored their evolution and development around the world, from Italy to America, and closer to home, looking at their importance as cultural venues and designed spaces.
V&A Dundee virtual talk on history of robots
We enjoyed a wonderful virtual introduction to the world of robots with V&A Dundee Curator, Kirsty Hassard.
Kirsty talked us through the history of robots and their early beginnings, the presentation traced the fascination of all things wired and wonderful and considered what the future might hold for our relationship with a multitude of mechanical machines.
It was absolutely thrilling to learn what robots can do now and what they might be able to do in the future.
