Activities at Washington Grange Care Home
Our group and individual activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate those we care for. We try to organise a mix of activities and events that reflect the interests and capabilities of residents for anyone and everyone to participate in. Our evenings of afternoon entertainment is enjoyed by residents and their families, who are all encouraged to sing along and dance. We try to involve our local community; members of the clergy often visit to hold lovely afternoon church services for residents. It is essential that our team are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those we support through person-centred activities, and that everyone has a fun and active time here at Washington Grange.

Lauren Burns
Activities Coordinator
Hi, my name is Lauren and I joined Barchester in July 2025 as an Activities Assistant (bank) before progressing to my current role of Activities Coordinator. I wanted to join the team as I saw how great everyone worked together, it felt like ‘one big family’.
I enjoy helping the residents and finding out about the past and listening to their remarkable stories, understanding their preferences, and hobbies so we can include in the homes activities programme. Seeing residents smile and interact, keeping them active and stimulated as part of a varied life enrichment programme is important.
Celebrating life at Washington Grange Care Home
Musical memories
Our lovely residents were treated to a fantastic visit from Musical Memories, and the home was filled with the joyful sounds of music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. There was singing, dancing, and plenty of smiles all around as everyone joined in with the classics we all know and love.
It was truly heart-warming to see our residents reminiscing, laughing, and enjoying such special moments together! Music has such a powerful way of bringing people together, and today was a perfect reminder of that. The energy in the room was amazing, and the happiness on everyone’s faces said it all. A huge thank you to Michaela for coming in and making the morning so memorable.

Resident realises dream
Resident, David had always wanted to visit The Fans Museum Sunderland- a place full of football history, passion, and memories. So, staff at the home made his wish a reality.
David has lived at Washington Grange for 4 years and is beloved by staff and residents alike. Staff at the home were delighted to be a part of making his dream come true, as they knew how much it meant to him, and they all wanted to be there to see the smile on David’s face when his dream was realised.
Staff first found out about David’s dream in 2026 and, ever since then, they have been dedicated to helping him achieve it. David was also accompanied by relatives who were there to witness this momentous occasion. In response to this wonderful surprise, David, said: “I have had the best birthday ever, it was a dream to go there- I just never got the opportunities”
Pamper evening
Our residents at Washington Grange enjoyed a truly special evening of relaxation, laughter and a little bit of luxury! The evening was filled with soothing face masks, hand and foot masks, gentle hand and foot massages, and some well-deserved nail care and pampering. It was wonderful to see everyone relaxing, chatting, and enjoying the calming atmosphere together.
To make the evening even more delightful, residents sampled a selectin of delicious fresh fruit, and of course, enjoyed a cheeky glass of champagne – because every pampering evening deserves a touch of sparkle. Moments like this are so important – promoting wellbeing, encouraging social interaction, and most importantly, bringing smiles to our residents' faces. Seeing everyone relaxed, happy, and feeling special made the evening truly special. A big thank you to our amazing team for creating such a warm and comforting experience for our residents.
Mother's Day
At Washington Grange we had a wonderful time celebrating Mother's Day with our lovely residents, their families and our wonderful team. The morning began with a warm and welcoming coffee morning, where everyone enjoyed delicious treats, plenty of tea and coffee, and most importantly, meaningful conversations and shared memories. It was so special to see families spending quality time together and celebrating the amazing mothers and mother figures in the community.
In the afternoon, the celebrations continued with fantastic live music entertainment from Sam Naylor. Sam brought such great energy to the home, filling the room with music, singing, and lots of smiling faces. Many of our residents joined in with the songs, clapped along, and even had a little dance! Mother's Day is a time to honour love, care, and the incredible role mothers play in our lives. At Washington Grange, we are proud to celebrate these special moments with our residents and create memories filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness! Thank you to everyone who helped make this day so special.
Pumpkin picking at Brockbushes Farm Shop
Residents from our Memory Lane community took to the road to enjoy a visit to Brockbushes Farm Shop, where they enjoyed pumpkin picking.
This was a new experience for all, having not done so previously, and everyone had a great time. It was a lovely morning with fresh air and the weather was kind to us too!
A birthday wish completed
At Washington Grange Care Home, we believe birthdays should be filled with joy, meaning, and a little bit of magic – and that is exactly what we created for our wonderful resident David! This year, David has a special birthday wish… to visit The Fans Museum Sunderland – a place full of football history, passion, and memories.
So our activities coordinator teamed up with David’s loving wife and his son to make it happen. From the moment they arrived, David was all smiles! Sharing the experience with his family made it even more meaningful, as they explored the incredible memorabilia and reminisced about cherished football moments together. It wasn’t just a trip – it was a celebration of David, his passions, and the people who mean the most to him. Moments like this remind us how important it is to make wishes come true, no matter how big or small!
Easter joy
What a truly special and heart-warming day we had celebrating Easter together. Some of our wonderful staff members brought their families into the home to join our residents for a fun-filled Easter egg hunt. Seeing different generations come together created such a warm and joyful atmosphere throughout the home. Residents loved watching the children searching high and low for colourful eggs, sharing laughter, stories, and smiles along the way.
It was beautiful to see friendships forming, memories being made, and our home filled with happiness and excitement. Moments like this are so meaningful. Bringing families into our home helps create a sense of community, connection, and belonging for our residents. Events like this remind us all how important it is to share joy, laughter, and special occasions together. A huge thank you to our amazing staff and their families for making this day so special, and to our residents for joining in with such enthusiasm.
St Patrick's Day
This month at Washington Grange, we came together to celebrate St Patrick's Day in the best way possible! Our home was filled with the sound of music, bringing smiles, memories, and a wonderful sense of togetherness. Residents and staff enjoyed a lovely dance, sharing laughter and special moments that truly lifted everyone’s spirits.
Of course, no St Patrick's Day celebration would be complete without a glass of Guinness, which many of our residents thoroughly enjoyed as part of the festivities. Days like this are so important, they encourage social connection, promote wellbeing, and create meaningful experiences for everyone in our care. It's not just about celebrating a tradition, but about making memories and ensuring our wonderful residents feel joy, inclusion, and a sense of belonging!

Pie's the limit!
Staff and residents had a fantastic time celebrating British Pie Week, a brilliant excuse to sample lots of delicious fare.
Over the course of the week, overseen by head chef Michelle, staff and residents experimented with many different types of pie fillings and flavour combinations, from more traditional meat and vegetable fillings, to vegetarian and vegan offerings, hot and spicy fillings, and sweet pies and pastries - this week has certainly been a veritable pie-filled feast!
General Manager, Ben said: “It wasn’t just the residents that were excited when we found out there was a British Pie Week, the eyes of the staff lit up too! Everyone loves pie and our Resident Ambassador was ecstatic when she found out, she went around the home asking others what there favourite pie was.
Dementia Disco
Here at Washington Grange we celebrated world Alzheimer’s Day with a dementia disco. One of our residents, Leslie, from memory lane, was the life and soul of the party. He never stopped. He was such great fun by dancing with staff and making us laugh with his personality and his funny impressions.
This brought Leslie so much joy and happiness he was for ever grateful and kept saying thank you for such a special day. Some very special memories were made.
A wish fulfilled at Washington Grange
For weeks, our wonderful resident's ambassador Lily has been sharing her ideas for a sweet trolley – filled with sweets, tasty treats, and refreshing drinks for everyone to enjoy. Lily’s enthusiasm and excitement inspired us all, and we knew we had to make it happen! Our amazing Deputy Manager, Lynsey, spent weeks collecting pieces, decorating, and putting her creativity to work to bring Lily’s vision to life. From thoughtful details to colourful decorations, every part of the trolley has been created with love and care.
The 20th April marked the grand opening of our very own sweet trolley! Our resident ambassador Lily, deputy manager Lynsey, and manager Ben proudly cut the ribbon together, opening the trolley for everyone to enjoy. The smiles, laughter, and excitement of residents and staff made the moment even more special. This is what Washington Grange is all about – listening, caring, and making wishes come true. A huge thank you to Lily for her fantastic idea, Lynsey for her dedication and creativity, and Ben for supporting this wonderful initiative.
A lovely day at Washington Grange
This week we made the most of the beautiful sunshine here at Washington Grange, and what better way to enjoy it than with some traditional fish and chips! Our resident spent the afternoon relaxing outdoors, soaking up the warm sunshine, enjoying a refreshing glass of lemonade, and taking in the fresh air.
These simple moments can bring so much joy, and it was wonderful to see such smiles and contentment. Spending time outdoors not only lifts spirits but also supports wellbeing, offering opportunities for relaxation, conversation, and enjoying the little things that make each day special. At Washington Grange, we love creating meaningful moments like these, ensuring our residents continue to enjoy life’s pleasures – whether its sunshine, good food, or simply a peaceful afternoon outside.
Trips out to the local garden centre
This March our wonderful residents have a lovely trip out to our local garden centre! Getting out into the fresh air and spending time in nature can have such a positive impact on wellbeing, and this trip was filled with smiles, conversation and beautiful scenery. Residents enjoyed strolling around the colourful displays of flowers and plants, sharing memories of gardening and admiring the seasonal arrangements!
After exploring the garden centre, everyone relaxed in the café where we enjoyed a delicious cup of tea and a freshly baked scone. It was a perfect opportunity to sit back, chat, and make more special memories. Outings like this are so important as they support social interaction, stimulate the senses, and help maintain a strong connection with the community. Seeing the residents laughing, chatting and enjoying the moment truly made the day special for both residents and staff.
Remembrance Sunday
On the 9th November, two of our lovely residents attended the remembrance the Sunday parade at Washington village.
They really enjoyed the service and paid their respects. They got to speak to some of the fellow veterans after the service. The residents were very grateful to get this opportunity to attend this event.
Making wishes come true
Here at Washington Grange, one of our lovely ladies' wishes was to visit South Shields beach. We changed our mini-bus excursion, and we made this happen. Surrounded by Christine's friends, we had a lovely stroll along the beach, followed by a delicious meal at the Sundial. Christine couldn’t wait to tell everyone about her trip out she spoke about it to everyone.
Christine was entirely grateful for this opportunity. She got a little bit emotional for us making it happen and thanked us many times.
