Activities at Woodhorn Park Care Home

Residents and colleagues at Woodhorn Park were delighted to receive activity packs filled with quizzes, puzzles and craft ideas kindly donated by Age UK Northumberland.

On behalf of Woodhorn Park, Residents and colleagues would like to pass on their gratitude for being considered at this time of uncertainty and hope everyone stays safe and well.  Such a nice gesture thinking of us care homes and everyone joining forces to keep the community spirit together!

Residents and staff at Woodhorn Park laced up their trainers and warmed-up for a fun-filled afternoon of games. Staff and residents showed their friendly competitive streak as they took to their marks in a selection of games, an interactive game of crazy golf., and for the gentlemen it was eyes on the bulls eye with a game of darts.  The teams battled it out to be crowned sporting champions!

General Manager Julie Bond said: “We always encourage our residents to keep active. With summer underway we had a great opportunity to have some indoor fun before we can get outside to enjoy our gardens. Our residents and their guests really enjoyed today and it was lovely to see so many of them getting involved. It reminded all of us of when we were kids at school!”

Residents enjoyed a trip to their very own Planetarium courtesy of Woodhorn Park Space Station as they remembered the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Residents got their hands messy by making paper mache planets, painting them and then suspending them from the ceiling, with a backdrop of the planets, an extra special sensory projector and a shaky down mattress, we took it in turns to lie down and look at the stars. We entered Space via VR headset and sensory objects finished the day. Many of the homes residents have never had an virtual reality experience and found it both fascinating and thrilling.

Oh we do like to be besides the seaside! As you can see the great British weather let us down but Residents of Woodhorn Park just moved their celebrations inside. Residents enjoyed dipping their toes in the paddling pool and feeling the sand under their feet. A good day was had by all.

Residents at Woodhorn Park revelled in all things sweet on World Chocolate Day with a range of chocolatey activities on Tuesday 7th July.   Staff helped create a fun filled day of chocolate themed activities including an afternoon tea indulging in all things chocolate! It was sure to satisfy any chocolate lover.

Residents joined in the fun and enjoyed dipping a selection of fruity treats from strawberries, bananas and marshmallows into the taste-busting chocolate fountain, whilst others enjoyed the tray or trolley service so no one missed a treat.   Conversation flowed as Residents explored the different wrappings from popular sweet brand, Cadbury’s from over the years and the many different offerings with Turkish delight a firm favourite receiving the most votes.

Julie Bond, Senior General Manager said: “Our head chef loves making sweet things and the chocolate fountain rich in chocolate went down a treat. It was great to give chocolate tasting a go with the fresh fruit, it was a lovely afternoon for us all”

For some residents at Woodhorn Park care home in Ashington, the long awaited reunion with family and friends became a reality recently, as garden visits have now been allowed to commence at the home.

There has been much careful planning and preparation for this moment behind the scenes at Barchester Healthcare, who run Woodhorn Park care home. Social distancing was still in place, and homes that are able to take part must have a large accessible garden.

It was welcome news to so many residents, family, and friends, who were kept apart for so long following strict government guidance. Residents and their loved ones got together in the home garden and the garden was fully of joy and chatter.
