What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"This is the 3rd care home that Mum has been in and most certainly the best. The whole team is amazing. They always have time to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. They have always treated Mum as an individual, not just another resident, and know her likes and dislikes so can manage her care in the best way for her. The place is always spotless and the food is amazing! There is an entertainment program and relatives/carers are encouraged to join in. I cannot praise this home enough. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do. You are all stars!"

"What a fabulous place is Ashlar House. I have become a regular visitor here. The facilities are fabulous, the food and menu choices amazing, the care is second to none, and the entertainment and activities are wonderful. I visited a friend who came to Ashlar House in December 2023 and they are very happy there. I am able to visit with my daughter's dog, and we are both made to feel most welcome. There is a cafe for residents and visitors to enjoy refreshments together and a regular calendar of activities, outings and visitors is provided so that there is always something happening. I have been really impressed with everything about Ashlar House. Well done to all the team!"

"Mum came to Ashlar House with advanced dementia and other health problems. She was very poorly having spent the past couple of weeks in hospital. She was receiving end-of-life care. It was a particularly difficult time for her but also for the family. We found all the staff - without exception - to be extremely caring, compassionate, professional and friendly. We couldn’t have wished for better care for Mum. We were particularly thankful for the care they showed us too. Thank you Team Ashlar!"

"From the moment you walk through the doors of Ashlar House, you know that your loved one will be in good hands. The dining area is always clean and bright with a menu for the day on show and seasonal flowers and decor on display. There are always members of staff engaging with residents with lots of laughter and chatting - it's so lovely to see. The manager is always on hand to offer help and support as well as all the members of staff. From the start of Mum's stay members of staff were so keen to get to know her, knowing this would help her to feel safe and secure. Unfortunately Mum has now passed away but I know that if she had been in better health she would have loved the full programme of lovely things Ashlar provide for their residents. All the members of staff were so attentive and gave professional compassionate care to Mum and to us as well. I can't thank them enough for their kindness. Our father has not long been at Ashlar House. We have found that all members of staff are fabulous. They are thoughtful, kind and professional, giving him attention with compassion and kindness. If we need to discuss Dad's care someone is never too far away to help and all staff are totally understanding of his needs. I can't thank everyone enough for all the support at this time."

"Excellent care home. Staff are extremely helpful and caring. As a family, we know my father is receiving the best possible care and the food is five-star. They go out of their way to make sure my father gets his cornflakes, which is his favourite."

"My husband has now been a resident for over a year now. Whilst his condition continues to decline, the care and attention he receives from the nursing team and carers has been exemplary. The whole team, led by the manager, have taken the time to get to know him and they adapt the ways in which they care for him. They are able to recognise and anticipate difficult situations to provide the most appropriate care needed at that time. They have been very supportive and work closely with me on a daily basis to provide the best outcome for his care. A huge effort was made at Christmas for everyone at Ashlar. The home was decorated beautifully, providing a very homely feel and chef prepared an excellent lunch to which relatives were invited to join their loved ones. I know I made the right decision in placing my husband in their care."

"My mum and I could not be more thankful for the care given to my dad while he was at Barchester Ashlar House Care Home. The kindness shown to him and the support given to us by every member of staff was immeasurable. It's difficult thinking about a loved one going into a nursing home, but the first moment we stepped through the door we knew he was coming to the right place. Welcoming, professional and caring. You couldn't ask for me. Dad's passing was as dignified and compassionate as it could be. Thank you for making a difficult time for him and his family as comfortable as it could be. We felt included at a time when one is completely helpful."

"The staff and carers have a tough job with the people who stay at the care facility here but from seeing things myself over the past three weeks, they do a fantastic job. they must be a special type of person, because I know I couldn't do it! Well done!"

"At Ashlar House, the staff are considerate and kind and go out of their way to make sure the residents are safe and comfortable. I have witnessed several acts of kindness and patience in feeding. When I leave at the end of my daily visit, I feel assured that my husband is in good, gentle hands."

"Ashlar House Care Home is a very well-run and managed home and our family member is extremely settled and comfortable. The carers are all very professional and caring and there when needed. It can't be easy looking after people who have problems and we as a family have always found everyone very compassionate, caring and kind. Well done to everyone and keep up the good work. I would 100% recommend Ashar House if anyone is looking for long-term care for loved ones."

"I couldn't be more appreciative of the staff. So helpful, patient, hardworking and caring and always has time for the families. The manager, despite her heavy workload, will always give her time and does a great job. The nurses are fantastic and the rest of the care staff are pure gold. I am so grateful that they take such good care of my mum."

"In my opinion, Ashlar House is very well run by its excellent manager. She pays as much attention to the relative's well-being as to the patient himself. The staff are all friendly and helpful without exception and arranged a lovely Valentine's Day special lunch for my husband and myself and the other couples."

"The staff at Ashlar House are very professional, kind and considerate at all times. They treat the residents with patience and are very caring. Every member of staff is always cheerful and greets family members in a friendly, welcoming manner. I highly recommend Ashlar House to anyone looking for a care home for a loved one. At celebratory times during the year, a great effort is made to make the occasion and make life as enjoyable as possible. All staff work very hard."

"My husband has only been a resident for 4 weeks. One consideration in choosing this home was the care and support given by admin staff to me and how much they wanted to know in advance about my husband to ensure he was given the right level of care. The nursing and care staff have been so supportive and given me guidance on how to settle my husband. They are very to know as much about him as to assist in his care."

"My wife has Alzheimer's and is now immobile following a catastrophic fall at home and many weeks in the hospital, becoming increasingly morose. I was very relieved when Ashlar House Care Home agreed to accept her as a long-term resident. She had 2 respite stays there previously, so I know how good it is. Just how good, I've now discovered. When you enter Ashlar House Care Home you feel surrounded by warmth and not just the temperature! I immediately felt at home, warmly and inclusively welcomed. The managers and staff are amazing. Managers' doors are always open. And if you need anything, there's always a staff member close by. Chefs, cleaners, carers, nurses, whatever you want, ask anyone and they'll fix it. It's my belief that these kind and positive attitudes are the basic elements that explain why Ashlar House Care Home is so outstandingly good and why my wife is now smiling a lot and is so much happier than she's been for a long time. If you're looking for a care home in the Epping area, look no further."

"Our first visit to our Great Aunt and we were made to feel welcome. It was obvious our Great Aunt was well cared for. She was chatted too affectionately and had a steady supply of drinks bought through to her. The photographs taken and printed as a memento from our visit was an unexpected and thoughtful touch. Our Great Aunt expressed that she was happy in the home - high praise!"

"Our 93yo Mum moved to Ashlar House in June 22 from another Essex care home where she had been discharged for assessment, from hospital. Whilst she was cared for to an extent, it was not meeting either mum's needs and expectations, so she asked us to move her. This was the best move we could have made! Ashlar is just lovely, and exactly what the whole family had envisaged 'Residential Care' should be. There is an atmosphere of calm professionalism, understanding, and care all within the beautifully decorated rooms, the dining/sitting room, etc and all of the staff are so friendly, kind and respectful, whilst providing the best possible care they can. Mum is truly happy to be there and enjoys everything about the care, the staff, facilities, meal times, and enrichment opportunities. Personally, I could not recommend Ashlar more, and I would encourage anyone researching care for relatives or themselves, to visit Ashlar and meet the staff, and view the facilities."

"Mum moved to Ashlar House in late June and took just minutes to settle right in. She loves everything about the place. The caring helpful and thoughtful staff who meet all of her everyday needs, chefs, and housekeeping make her ask herself constantly why at 93 years old she waited so long to find this wonderful place. To entertainment staff who make her feel younger and more alive than she had in many many years! Ashlar House meets not just mums needs but the whole family's needs. We know she’s in safe caring hands and they keep us fully informed of everything we need to know. The nursing staff monitors her health daily and liaise with the local doctors to proved excellent care and we are never more than a phone call away day or night. We can’t thank the staff enough for making our mum so happy and content thank you all at Ashlar House!"

"In general, I find my mother well looked after at Ashlar House. On times I find the carers could be a little overwhelmed, but I have never seen them show anything but care and a smile. In all situations. The carers and nurses I cannot rate highly enough. The facilities are an 8 out of 10. Air conditioning or more fans could help as very hot weather can make life uncomfortable or worse. Although the facilities are better than most other homes, the care certainly makes up and surpasses them."

"My mother is being well cared for and all the staff are helpful and kind. The care home made a huge effort to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, tables outside in the sunshine on Friday 3rd June 2022. There was a band, balloons, a barbecue, face painting and lots of the residents family members attended. Everyone had fun and the residents enjoyed singing and clapping along to the music and eating ice creams from the visiting ice cream van."

"My dad has been a resident for a short period, but I must say, the love, support and care have been of the richer scale. The home is spotlessly clean, as clean and nice as a five-star hotel. "I came here with a little trepidation as I was not looking forward to seeing her in a care home. I needn't have worried. I was treated with warmth but the administration office and taken around to see the facilities. When I was taken to see my friend, her broad grin showed me how very happy she is, and the lunch that was delivered to her looked delicious. I am leaving her feeling much more at peace and knowing she has come to the right place. Wonderful!"

"Exceptional home - recently modernised to a high standard. My mum has been at Ashlar for 4-years, during which time, she has had excellent care. The staff are all friendly and professional and show genuine love for all the residents. I have never worried about Mum and am fully entrusted in the home's care for her. The end of life care my mum recieved was above and beyond, and I will be forever grateful for that. Highly recommend Ashlar."

"My mother-in-law has been a resident at Ashlar House for about 3 weeks. Everyone at the home is so friendly and welcoming there’s a lovely refreshments area for visitors as you enter which in itself makes you feel part of the home. My mother-in-law loves the entertainment and the courtyard garden is her favourite place to sit. It is well maintained clean and tidy the lounges feel homely with a boutique hotel feel. She is starting to settle and seems genuinely pleased to see and have time with the staff who take great care of her."

"My mother has had end of life care since February so she had not moved from her bed or room. She is always clean and tidy and I feel she is always treated with respect and dignity by the excellent staff. Her room is very small and is awkward when two people visit together, she is at the end of a corridor which I feel she is quite isolated from the goings-on of the rest of the home. "I visited a resident of Ashlar House for the first time while renovations are taking place, the staff were so welcoming. I was very impressed with the layout and decor of the home. The corridors are wide and everywhere appeared bright and airy. My friend was out of her room so a member of staff went and found her. Although not a large room it was bright and clean with nice furniture. We were (I had a friend with me) impressed with the variety of daily activities which are arranged for the residents and the staff were very complimentary to our friend in her engagement with them. "When my Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in September, we quickly realised that Mum would not be able to go home as she needed round the clock care, we moved Mum across from Kent into Ashlar House so she could be near us, she settled in really well and although Mums decline was rapid, the team got to know her quickly ensuring her needs were met and her tea was made properly! There was always someone for us to talk to and Mum was treated with dignity and respect especially in her final days as were we also. I will say that the activities coordinator ensured Mum ticked off a couple of her bucket list items and she kept her entertained as much as possible, Mum was going to be a VIP guest on Remembrance Sunday but unfortunately passed 10 days before. We attended in her absence and was proud to support Ashlar House. Although our time there was short I would always recommend them. Thank you all at Ashlar House for supporting my Mum and family through her final weeks."

"Ashlar House is without question the best care home in the district. My husband was a resident there for just over 5 years. All the staff were so friendly and kept me in touch with what was going on day and night during the lockdown. In the last week of his life even though this was in the middle of COVID, they gave me unrestricted access to be with him. "My Father suffers from dementia and when he went to Ashlar House he had come from hospital where he was very confused and weak. With the superb care that he got from day one, he looks not only healthier but happy in himself and more alert. "I am extremely happy that my mum is at Ashlar House. It is a very warm and welcoming environment and all the staff go above and beyond to care for her. Nothing is too much trouble and all her needs are well catered for. The environment is clean and well kept, the rooms are comfortable and every effort is made to make them as homely and familiar as possible. They do everything they can to provide stimulus and activities for the residents. Before the pandemic, as a relative, you could drop in whenever you wanted. During the pandemic, they have done all they can to keep relatives updated and create safe opportunities for visits. I'm really glad that I am able to once again see my mum, which is essential for her and me. I would like to give a very warm thank you to everyone at Ashlar House for looking after my mum."

"A dear friend of mine has been wonderfully looked after at Ashlar House in these difficult times with the Coronavirus, with continued high levels of added hygiene that's needed. A great help has been the FaceTime that was set up by the home, it has reassured my friend and me during these last months in lockdown and restricted access times. "As this difficult year comes to a close I just wanted to say how delighted I am that my great Aunt is being so beautifully and professionally cared for at Ashlar House. Its been a very trying year for all residents and staff at Ashlar, I know due to very tightly controlled hygiene rules that are keeping staff and residents as safe as possible. As personal visits have been drastically reduced and often not possible over the past few months the Activities Manager has been very busy in contacting loved ones including my great Aunt with FaceTime via computer a very valuable and reassuring way to keep in touch in these times, it has provided communication which has helped greatly. Also, I would love to thank all staff including management for their continuous tireless care and work at Ashlar I am very happy that my great auntie is being kept safe by caring and professional staff there. Seasons Greetings to Management and staff at Ashlar and a Happy New Year 2021."

"I am very fortunate that my mother has been looked after and cared for at Ashlar House for more than five years. As I live in the USA I am unable to visit frequently, but I did manage two visits last year. Ashlar is a very good, clean home with loving, caring, professional staff and my mother is fed well and kept very clean and happy there. I couldn’t wish for her to be anywhere better and can only say from my experience, that Ashlar is a better home than I’ve witnessed here in the USA. It’s a shame I have had to cancel my visit this year due to government airline guidance, but I can relax knowing my mother is so well cared for."

"To me, this care home is outstanding in every way. The bedrooms, eating areas, lounge everywhere you go is clean and tidy as you would expect. My uncle is a resident in this home and I have not seen him as happy as he is now for a long time. The care he gets is outstanding. He is always doing some sort of supervised activities. I live 60 miles away and it’s good to know my uncle is being well looked after. I would recommend this care home to anybody who is looking for somewhere safe, clean and secure, for their loved ones to be looked after."

"I am the daughter of a resident and live in Australia. I can tell all aspects of her care are taken into consideration. Excellent communication is always there for the family and with my mum and the staff whenever we need it. The staff, especially one staff member in particular, always keeps me informed, sends me pictures of my mum and helps me talk with her on Whats-app as mum needs help using her phone. I can see her room and the whole place is always clean and tidy and the food looks healthy. My mum always speaks highly of all the staff as kind, caring people who take time to chat with her and are always helpful to all our family. My daughter loves calling and speaking with her grandmother and we feel like she is in excellent hands which is very important as we are so far away and can't visit her. I have been very impressed with the COVID-19 safety plans and the level of high care at all times for my mum and it is very much appreciated. Big congratulations to all the staff and management."

"Our father was admitted to Ashlar House on the 28th February 2020 after suffering a major stroke and brain bleed on the 20th January. He was already suffering from Alzheimer’s over the last 14 years. The care my father has received since his admission has been absolutely first class. All the staff, have been excellent, but a special word for one member in particular, who during the lockdown has always taken the time to call us on FaceTime so we can communicate with Dad. She is a bubbly, has an engaging personality who is a credit to the care system. I am looking forward to visiting my dad at the nursing home as soon as is possible, and thanking the staff personally. Thank you for the way they have looked after our father during these difficult times."

"Sadly I lost my wonderful husband on Saturday 6th June 2020 aged just 70 years old. We had been married for 51 years and known each other for 62 years since childhood. I would just like to say that he has been a resident in Ashlar House in Epping for 5 and a half years. I can’t begin to thank the staff enough, starting with; The Manager, The deputy manager, The lady on reception and admin, Our chef and his staff. Every one of the fantastic carers whom number far too many to name individually, and I’m afraid I will miss someone out, and finally the housekeeping staff and cleaners. Ashlar House has looked after not only my husband but have also looked after me, especially in his last week before he peacefully slipped away from me. There are no words to tell you how grateful I am to this wonderful, fantastic place. I will try my best to continue to support them when the lockdown is lifted. Barchester should be proud and privileged to have such a wonderful and caring home with their name."

"We are closing another year 2019 chapter and 2020 is on our doorstep. I just wanted to write a sincere thank you to Ashlar House from management, nurses, activities manager, kitchen staff to cleaning staff and maintenance. My mother has been at Ashlar House since May 2018 and has developed both physically and mentally in this time. The cleanliness and personal hygiene standers are extremely high, as I have visited at many different times of the day, and my mother always looked well turned out. A special aspect of my mother's progression is due to activities done by the activities management, crafts and seasonal well thought out tasks to be done by able residents. At times my mother needed nursing care, and again this has been totally professionally undertaken at all times. I believe a refurbishment will start in January 2020 and look forward to seeing this compleated Thank you all at Ashlar House for your professional and heartfelt care there!"

I just wanted to express my deepest felt appreciation and massive thanks for everything that the care staff did for my mum during her last few harrowing months/weeks of her life in at Ashlar House. I simply just cannot speak highly enough of the staff’s genuine kindness, concern and ongoing dedication. I honestly feel that they went above and beyond the call of duty in caring for my mum. They all work so tirelessly hard in carrying out a very physically and emotionally demanding job and I never once heard a single one of them moan. From when we first went to view the home the staff were helpful and most of all approachable. Nothing seemed too much which to us was a major positive. The time my friend spent within the care home improved her quality of life and the staff made sure she was comfortable at all times. "My mother-in-law has been a resident at Ashlar for more than four years and she appears to be very happy there. I say ‘appears to be’ because sadly she can no longer communicate in this way but I know that the standards are high and the care from the staff is second to none. They are always so kind, considerate and unbelievably patient. The meals are excellent too and, even though her food now has to be puréed for her, it is still presented as attractively and imaginatively as is possible. There are many areas to walk around and there are three gardens, a dining room and two lounges. One further positive factor is the appointment of the Acting Manager and the resulting stability this has brought to the wonderful staff of Nurses and Carers. I honestly don’t think that my grandmother could be in a better place."

"My mother has been a resident at Ashlar for more than 3 years and she has generally been very happy there. When she was able to articulate, she would always say that it was a lovely place and would comment on how clean and tidy it was. Sadly my mother cannot communicate in this way anymore but I know that the standards are high and the care from the staff is second to none. They are always so kind and considerate. The food is excellent too and there is always a choice. There are many areas to walk around and there are three gardens, two lounges and a dining room. Activities take place in the lounges frequently or on a one to one basis, but residents can retire to their rooms if they wish. I would not hesitate to recommend Ashlar House."

"Barchester Ashlar House, Epping, with extremely efficient staff and facilities. My dad had a very happy, active time where every member of staff was very friendly, very professional and Dad felt as though he belonged to another family. The activities kept Dad happy and active. I am very grateful Dad spent time at Ashlar House as his time there was very memorable. The food was excellent too. I can not thank ALL the staff enough for making Dad's time so very special. Definitely a Care Home to be recommended."

"Having viewed numerous care homes for my mother as soon as we walked into Ashlar House we were impressed. An extremely friendly home amongst staff and other residents families. Excellent care is given to my mother, we have no complaints at all. The home is clean, the food is great. Some really nice activities are put on. We made the right choice for our mother and I would highly recommend Ashlar House."

"When my mother first arrived in Ashlar House from hospital she was able to sit in a wheelchair, have her hair done, eat her meals at a table and do her makeup. She was treated with the greatest respect and care by all staff - the manager, nurses, carers and caregivers. Now sadly she is bedridden and was no will to improve as she wants to join her husband in gods kingdom. The treatment she is receiving is the best you can get in my opinion. All staff are kind and caring at all times. I'm so impressed with the whole set up at Ashlar House and feel we could not better it."

"My mother has been with Barchester Ashlar House Care Home for 2 and a half years and I have always found the staff to be helpful and the home to be clean. Even though there have been a few changes in management in the last few years, we now have a new, hopefully, permanent manager and it now seems that things are now on a more even footing. Overall, the care/security and helpfulness of the management, nurses, carers and even housekeeping and chefs is always second to none."

"My mother spent 18 months in Ashlar house. The last 10/11 months she was bed-ridden and totally dependant on staff for every need. The staff showed great care and compassion and mum responded well to their efforts. The way mum's passing was handled was very comforting. Ashlar House cares for those with Alzheimer's disease and I have nothing but admiration for the staff there. All facilities were clean and food excellent."

"My Nan came as end of life patient. The care she received was the most amazing any family could ask for. From the general manager to the carers to the cooks all did this home so proud! My family and I couldn't have asked for a more pleasant experience in such a hard and difficult time. Thank you so much."

"My mum was admitted to Ashlar House Care Home for end of life care. The care staff, nurses and management treated her with such kindness, warmth, dignity and respect. You would have thought she was actually a member of their own personal family. Nobody was too busy to give me an update on how my mum had been that day and all the time I was away from mum's bedside I had no worries that she was not being cared for because she was. Mum's bedroom and bed linen was always clean and tidy and mum's personal care was outstanding. Unfortunately, my mum passed away but I would not have wished her to pass anywhere else than Ashlar House Care Home. Thank you, everyone, for taking care of my lovely mum."
